Aluminum Rejuvenation and Electrical Panel

I contacted Captain Electric to conduct an electrical home inspection because during our general home inspection a few issues were found that needed to be addressed. The main problem was that there was aluminum wiring in the house which wasn’t installed properly and we could smell burned plastic when we used some of the lights. We booked an appointment through Diane who let us know about the $99 fee and that she would call before the electricians came. The day of the inspection I received a call from Diane that they were on the way. Ryan and Nathan arrived and they began their electrical inspection. I showed them the electrical panel, the outlets and some of the issues we were having with our lights. They then told us about our options to do an aluminum rejuvenation of the home and redo our electrical panel with arc vault breakers to bring them to code. My wife and I agreed that this would be worth the investment and we also agreed to install smoke/co2 alarms. I appreciated that they have set pricing for their work so you know that you won't have to pay anymore then what they quoted you.

It was a two day job and they were at my home at 8am both days on the dot. They were very respectful of my home and my elderly cat who wanted to know what was going on and who these people were. Ryan and company also put up all of our new light fixtures, installed a surge protector on our electrical panel and gave me a lesson on how to operate the new electrical panel. Along with that they replaced all receptacles in the house with the aluminum rejuvenation. It was a really big job and I am very happy with the service that I received from Captain Electric. I would definitely recommend them as they are a first class organization from customer service on the phone to the electricians on the ground.

Thank you Shane. We appreciate your detailed review and are glad to hear you are happy with the service we provided. ***Aluminum wiring in itself is usually not the problem, rather it is the poorly made or improperly made connections that are usually the cause of failures within a system. Our Rejuvenation process gives your electrical system a fresh start (Rejuvenation = remaking all connections, replacing all switches and receptacles within the home). *** Your new Electrical Panel along with "ARC-Fault Breakers" provides the Ultimate protection to circuits within the home, as ARC-Fault Breakers are designed to trip when an ARC is detected (note: Arcing within an electrical circuit can lead to fire). *** Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors are mandatory, and need to be up-to-date, replaced at least every 10 years - or as stated by the manufacturer. *** Shane - you and your family can now rest easier, knowing that your home has now been updated to modern safety standards. Thank you for choosing Captain Electric, and we look forward to seeing you again. ... bw

Upgrade to electrical panel

Upgraded my panel from fuses to circuit breakers. What impressed me the most was how neat and tidy all of the wiring was done. Very, very good work. Great guys to have on site as well. Clean-cut, and very respectable. I appreciate this very much, Especially in this day and age when so many really don't care about what they look like or what kind of work they do.

We appreciate your review here on HomeStars. Thank you for noticing the quality of our workmanship, as well as our people being clean-cut. ***Because we are a service company, and work inside of our client's homes and businesses every day, it is important that we are presentable. this means that we wear our uniforms (white shirts & grey work pants), and keep our shoes polished and clean. ... Our Electricians understand how important this is, and we are very proud of them for how they dress and act in the presence of our clients. ***It is not always easy to keep clean all day (some jobs we do as electricians can be very dirty), but we do our best to be neat and clean. ***Clean up is also extremely important, and when a job is complete - there should be no evidence left behind that we were ever there. ***Thank you for choosing Captain Electric, and we look forward to serving you again, when you need us. ...bw

Hi Paul, thank you for posting this review of your service experience. *** We believe that it is very important that the client understands "why" we are doing something as well as what we are doing - when it comes to their electrical system. *** Providing options, and explaining those options is also very important, because this allows our clients to make an informed decision. *** We look forward to seeing you again soon. ... bw

Replacing lighting

I used these guys once again (4th time now) for lighting work, and was not disappointed. Replaced a dozen or so halogens with LED pots, new dimmers, added some new pots (which they did without cutting access holes), and undercounter LEDs. Guys did the job fast, cleaned up, did a great job. Customer service is excellent.

HIGHLY recommended.

Aluminum Wiring Update

When we purchased our house, we had to have the aluminum wiring updated as part of our insurance requirements. Captain Electric sent someone to our house just two days after our move-in, and gave us a very in-depth quote, a few options for price and work (we went with the bigger/safest option!).

Ryan and his team showed up bright and early, worked quickly and took the time to explain what they were doing. The entire team was also very accommodating with our very frightened little cat which meant a lot to both my partner and I.

I have no reservations about recommending Captain Electric to anyone needing a big or small job done. Really great professional service!

Hi Nadia, thank you for commenting here on HomeStars. ***Aluminum wiring requires very special care. Replacing all switches and outlets in your home, and properly remaking every electrical connection in the home ensures that the installation meets Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements. ***Your new electrical panel also brings you up to date for safety, and provides room to expand. ***We always recommend ARC-Fault protection as well - when we upgrade and install a new Electrical Panel. ... ARC-Fault protection is the ultimate in safety when it comes to electrical wiring within the home, as it trips the breaker and opens the circuit when an "ARC" is detected, eliminating electrical wiring as a potential cause of fire. ***It was our pleasure to be of service Nadia, and we look forward to seeing you next time. Thank you for choosing Captain Electric. ...bw

Our Go-To Electrical Team!

We moved into our house in 2013 and one of the first things we needed to do was to merge the two electrical systems into one meter and fusebox.

It took less than three weeks from Estimate to the project being completed. It was on cost, fairly priced, and the team were very conscious of keeping the house tidy while they did the work.

Ever since, whenever we have electrical work to be done we call them, and they're usually available within a day or two! We've had a couple of rooms re-wired since then.

Thanks Heather. We are happy to hear that we are your "Go-To Electrical Team." Any work involving the "main electrical service," "metering," "panel replacements" or "service upgrades" does require time to schedule with the Local Distribution Company (or LDC). Their services are required to disconnect and reconnect the electrical service from the building while we work on replacing or upgrading the system. This usually can take a week or two (unless it is an emergency). We always arrange everything ahead of time with the LDC and obtain the required permit from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). *** Keeping your home clean during the work that we do, and a good cleanup afterwards are a top priority for us. We are glad you notice this, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future the next time you need anything electrical looked after in your home. Thank you Heather for choosing Captain Electric. ...bw

Multiple Breaker Replacement

This is a terrific company. They arrived at the scheduled time with a confirming call in advance. Once here they took a great deal of time to review the work request and to present their credentials and guarantees. They were called to correct poor work provided by another company (that company had replaced a 30 Amp dual pole breaker with a 40 Amp dual pole and replaced other breakers that they said were "defective"). Realizing I had been had, I called Captain Electric to evaluate the changes. They confirmed that the 40 Amp breaker was wrong and, to be safe, I asked them to redo all the work the other company did. Everything was completed efficiently and expertly. I can not say enough about the professionalism of all the staff and the expertise of the attending electrician, Kevin. I will definitely use Captain Electric again and highly recommend them to others.

Thank you Wayne. We are glad to have been able to help. Unfortunately we see this same situation very often. Work that has been performed incorrectly, not to code, by unlicensed contractors, and without a permit from the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority). These items are now code compliant, and you rest easy knowing that. ***Homeowners should know that electrical work is a regulated trade, only an ECRA licensed Electrical Contractor employing certified electricians and registered apprentices can legally perform electrical work in Ontario. Always ask for credentials, always insist on an ESA Permit where required. Thank you for trusting in Captain Electric Wayne, and we will see you again when you need electrical service. ... bw

Replacement of bathroom fan and light

We needed to replace our bathroom fan and lamp. Dan came out to spec the situation and within a day we received quotations on various options we could go for. Dan and Kevin can to do the work a few weeks later (delay was on our end) and the replacement of the light and fan went very smoothly. They did a great job using the existing space in the ceiling and worked to minimally open up the ceiling space required for the new unit and the space was left very clean afterwards. We are very pleased with the Panasonic unit we have and the fan is much quieter than our previous fan and much stronger. Very pleased with the service from initial review and quote, to the actual installation, to the final product now in use. Thanks!

Thank you Robert. We are glad that you are happy with the service we provided and your new Panasonic fan. We have been using Panasonic fans exclusively for many years, and they have always performed very well. Definitely quieter, and powerful also. We install quite a few exhaust fans every year. Proper venting directly to outside is very important, when new vent caps are required, we always engage the services of a certified roofer, to ensure proper installation and guarantee the integrity of the roof. One thing we always recommend, is to install a timer switch for the fan, and have the fan run for 30 minutes after a shower, this clears not only the room - but also the vent pipe from moisture.

Move Electrical outlet , surge protector, smoke/Co detectors

We needed electrical work done in our kitchen prior to a renovation. Ryan fromCaptain Electric educated us about our "not code" smoke detectors. We had no idea that our detectors were not to code. He also educated us on the importance of the surge protector. We never felt pressured to proceed with the quote. Ryan will return after our kitchen refacing to complete a few more jobs for us. Thank you

Thank you Antoinette for your review here on HomeStars. *** Smoke Alarms are something that are often overlooked. The mere presence of smoke alarms does not necessarily equate to safety. We are all saddened when we hear of fires and smoke that take someone's life. This is why, when we are in a client's home, we always look at their Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarms. It is important that they have not expired. They may even appear to be okay because the alarm sounds when the test button is pressed, but that does not mean the actual sensor will detect smoke when smoke is present. Most are rated for 10 years only (some are less). ...If they are approaching 10 years old, it is good to have them replaced. If there are not enough Smoke Alarms, more should be added. New code actually requires Smoke Alarms with Strobe Lights in each bedroom in new home construction, in addition to hallways, and on each floor. ... Carbon Monoxide Alarms are also required to meet building code, and something every homeowner needs to have in place. ***Surge protection is also something that we highly recommend to protect your home electronics and appliances from damage. .... We thank you for choosing Captain Electric Antoinette, and will see you soon, when you are ready to have us back, and looking forward to seeing your new refaced cabinets. ...bw
