Deck Refinishing

I hope this review can help anyone else out there who is considering hiring Terry for their renovation needs. He was very professional, friendly, and accommodating when meeting with me to build a quote for my project. We agreed to a tentative start date, and I sent him a 25% deposit to secure a spot in the queue. Since then, our project has been delayed endlessly. No communication occurs unless I initiate contact. It has been one year since we sent the deposit and no work has been planned or done. After requesting a return of my deposit multiple times, Mr. Owen has stopped answering my calls and e-mails. My recommendation would be to look for someone else, who is more reliable and trustworthy.

Terry was amazing to work with. He came out many times to my home before taking on the project. Terry is very detailed and has very high standards regarding projects he takes on.
Evan the carpenter who worked on my project was great. Adjustments were made as he worked with composite material and he always had a solution to perfect his craftmanship.
They are both very detail oriented and will do there very best to perfect the project. Terry also added solar lights on the gate which was a great modern touch to complete the gates.
I will definately use deck refinishing in the future.

This father and son carpentry team really disappointed me. Despite my bad English, my memory is very accurate and here is the story: During the proposal he said that the porch refurbishment project would be divided into 2 steps that would be done on 2 separate days. But on the day he came to start working he suddenly decided that skipping the first step would be better for the structure of my house. And I opposed his sudden change of procedure because all the other contractors who came to do project proposals for my house all said this project is best to be proceeded with all 2 steps over 2 separate days. He then gave me a bunch reasons on why skipping the first step would be better, and finally convinced me to proceed with his idea. After he finished working on my house; I was skeptical on whether his faster method of completing the project made any sense, so I posted photos of the stuff he fixed on my porch on the internet for others to see, and all the experts told me that his sudden change of procedure is not suitable, and the correct method to do the project is to proceed with both 2 steps over 2 separate days. So basically he gave me a bunch of nonsense reasons and excuses (according to all the experienced contractors who saw pictures of the work he did for my house) just to convince me to change to the shorter method of finishing the project so that he and his crew can spend half the time they intended to spend on my house (which is 1 day, instead of 2 days) and still make the same money. I found him a bit deceptive on his marketing practice so I made a complaint on the Better Business Bureau against him but during the BBB investigation he insisted that his shorter method was better; despite the fact that ever expert on the internet who saw pictures of the work he did all said his shorter method was very unsuitable. During the project proposal he definitely verbally agreed to complete the first step of the project; but he denied ever promising that when the BBB Investigator asked him about it. That was pretty dishonest of him, and I found it unbearable. And he even accused me of forging his signature on the project estimate document that I submitted to BBB during the BBB investigation. That was definitely his signature, I accurately remember the day he finished fixing my house, I paid him cash inside his truck, his son/protégé/partner gave him a pencil to sign on my copy of the project estimate document to indicate that I paid. There were 2 copies of the estimate document, he only signed on mine but not his. During the BBB investigation he denied ever signing anything and he even accused me of forging his signature when he signed it in front of his son in his own truck. I found it totally unbearable.

Terry and his crew did an amazing job that was thorough and professional from start to finish. Terry even came by on short notice to touch things up and fix minor cosmetics as well. Work was started promptly every morning and cleaned up at the end of the day and always done to code. This type of work is heavily dependent on the weather so allow more time than you think you need. Terry's quote was similar to a few that I got but what sets him apart from others is his friendly personality and knowing that he stands behind his work 100%. We had a composite deck built and couldn't be more pleased with the results. It was great doing business with Deck Refinishing and I look forward to collaborating with them on future backyard projects.

Terry Owen and his team did a great job restoring the cedar pergola , stairs and railings of our deck. They spent hours sanding and cleaning all the surfaces to ensure the new stain would be absorbed into the wood. It was a long , tedious process and their attention to detail was amazing, often reverting to hand sanding to get into all the nooks and crannies. We were very happy with the results. The deck looks great. One piece of advice. Be prepared for delays when doing this work. Progress is highly dependent on the weather.

Terry Owen,company owner was extremely knowlegeable and hard working. In addition to sanding the cedar deck and staining it, his team replaced several rotten boards with new--a lengthy process. The fact that he is associated with Holmes on Homes- Mike Holmes, gave me a lot of confidence the job would be done expertly and WAS. We were somewhat impatient to get the job started but had to wait for a stretch of clear weather above 10 degrees C. The result is great!

I met Terry Owen through my contractor of Hickory Dickory Decks - Markham. They specialize in wood restoration and staining decks, is a member of HolmesonHomes.com.

Their price may be more expensive than other companies but they make sure the job is done right the first time. Terry came to our house to look at our new deck and gave us a quote on site based on the size and complexity of the deck. The price he quoted is for staining our deck two times. The first time was done in 2010 when the deck was built and the second time in 2011 after the harsh winter. He explained to us that his crew will first sand all the wood to make sure the wood properly absorbed the stain. When they started the job, they were careful not to damage our deck furniture and cover off the new composite deck. The stain colour (Cabot - Jarrah Brown) we chose matches perfectly with our deck colour and is distinctive from other decks we saw. In the end it was an excellent service and job.
