Plumbing

Found Action Auger online, so I had called to ask how much it would be to change 2 wax rings on 2 toilets. The girl on the phone says she does not know, and would need to send a technician to review and would let me know at the house, but would cost $69.95 for a "service call". Here I thought it couldn't be that expensive to just change a wax ring.... Tech shows up, and assessed my need, and then pulls out his magic pricing binder and tells me It would be $267 per toilet. Plus GST, plus the "service call" fee of $69.95 + gst on top of the $267 +GST per toilet. I had to stop and really think about this....it would cost me over $634 to just change 2 wax rings on 2 toilets.... As I'm thinking this through.... the tech brings up that the price is $267 only if the flange is ok. If the flange is broken, then it would be an additional $267 per toilet on top of the wax rings jobs of $267. At this point, I was feeling like I am really getting ripped off here and I better start thinking this through....as this could potentially be over $1,000!!! for just 2 small jobs. I had it then... I couldn't help myself but had to ask the tech that did he not think this was outrageous pricing??? He tells me that is the average......they are not the cheapest, but they are not the most expensive he says. I told him then I think I can get another plumber that is cheaper at the rate he is quoting me. He then proceeded to tell me that this is how it is with bigger names companies. That the company had big overheads with not just one plumber, but several. He says, maybe if you go with a one man plumber company, only then you may find something cheaper. And then I asked, that is how you justify on passing huge overhead costs to the consumers? And he says, well yes, that's how we make money. I was so blown away with his answers, their pricings, that I told him, No.... I have to stop you here and I do not want you to do the work. He then bills me for the "service call" of $69.95+GST. I was choked!!! But I still paid it because I was ignorant when I agreed to the girl on the phone on the service call fee. This is when I really needed to voice out which is HomeStars was the way to go. I want consumers out there to know and to really call around, and if the companies tells you that they need to charge you a service call, then really beware. I found another fully licensed & insured one man plumber company who did the job for me for $150+GST total. And he got it done in less than half an hour. And he was honest and actually tells me right out, it is a simple job. No need to charge you outrageously for a simple job.

New Dishwasher Installation

During our DIY kitchen renovation we needed help with new dishwasher plumbing. Called several companies, before finding The Gentlemen Plumbers who could come out the next day. Daniel quickly did the plumbing, fixed and cleaned a previous drain leak. Very pleasant experience. We will be calling The Gentlemen Plumbers for all our plumbing needs in the future.

Gas leak of furnace, and Hot water tank

Phoned about a gas leak on our furnace and our hot water tank.
Ask what the cost was, Quoted $69.95,
and whatever the cost to fix.
After spending 20 minutes he humming around, saying over and over again there are no leaks, he called the furnace maker and spoke to them, they suggested putting in a gas detector to see if there indeed was a leak, he processed to take the control panel off and pulled the burner plate out, and found nothing wrong, When he put it back together, he could not get the pipe back on, and said he needed to replace it, and the pipe would cost another $66 dollars, and the analysis fee of $133,00 which was never discussed, nor was it authorized for him to take it a part.
Ask him to put it back together as he found it, he refused to until he was paid in full, plus he never addressed the hot water tank,
stated he stuck his nose through the little 8x8 inch door and said there was no leak, he did Not remove the cover on the wall to access the tank.
Unprofessional, did not disclose the full cost at time of appointment, Analysis fee was neither discussed by the booking agent, nor was it discussed upon the arrival of the technician.
They basically held our furnace and heat for our home hostage until we agreed to pay in full.
Which we did under great duress, written on the bill.
MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE FINANCIAL DETAILS BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THIS COMPANY!!
EPIC FAIL ACTION AUGER!!!!!

Toilet install

I recently decided to change a toilet. Bought the toilet myself and thought I would get someone else to install it so it is done right. They showed up, charged me 69.95 to tell me it would cost me another "level 4" to install the toilet I provided. I bought the toilet for 79$ at Home Depot and you want to charge me 350 to put it in? It comes with everything. Bolts. Wax seal with horn.
Oh but I'm paying for the technician and his wonderful service. He told me he has been there a week. I learned how to do it on YouTube and did it myself.

Unplug Main Drain

Had water backing up in basement drain. Called Action Auger & came to the house within one hour. $69.95 Dispatch Fee, and they ask how you will be paying, on the initial call. Tech Outlined charges up front when he arrived. They had a set price if they had to go out main drain by 50', $359; or $427 if they had to go out 100'. Tech said he always starts with 100', and adjusts to lower amount if drain clears within the 50', so you kind of know where this is going. Their lowest fee for any additional services is set at $66. He said it is very likely tree roots. We have no trees known to invade sewer, but he said it didn't matter, they come from 100 feet away.He cleared the drain, total time at the house was about 2 1/2 hours. He found no tree roots, but suggested I should have a camera sent down to determine the cause of the blockage, added cost of $267. Said no thanks! But he then begins with a sales pitch suggesting Washing Machine hoses should be changed out, also a few of the plastic supply lines to the sinks should be changed. I was upstairs flushing toilets and running sinks to make sure back up was cleared, and when I returned to the basement he had taken off the front cover of the furnace, beginning to inspect. He stopped after I explained I just had it inspected on a recent duct cleaning, plus Direct Energy would be coming to do an annual inspection in Oct. He still wrote some kind of number from the furnace on sheet. He detected a gas leak in a pipe union. Soaped all connections. Tried to tighten the leaking connection, but couldn't, so had it changed at a cost of $66. Then he suggested we buy a bio drain cleaner. 1/2 a capful every month would help to keep drains clear, and deodorized. It was a small 1.9 litre bottle, priced at, you guessed it, $66. I said it was too expensive.... I said what was wrong with $19.95, as I am already going to pay out over $500! Don't know why they can't just stick to correcting the problem and forget the sales pitch, which becomes very annoying. Just stick to the job at hand. Their work supposedly is guaranteed for 67 days (weird time frame), so hopefully, I won't need them back on the warranty. They cleared my drain for which I am grateful, and they did a good job cleaning up under fairly messy circumstances. Not so sure I would recommend them to anyone, just based on the annoying sales pitch, plus they are very expensive, basically $500 to clear the drain after a 5% seniors discount, but probably in the same ball park as others in this business. Just wish they would stick to the job they were called to do, forget the scare tactics and sales pitch, because when you have a potentially catastrophic situation, the last thing you need is any sales pitch..... just promptly fix the dam problem! Stay away from my furnace and my sinks other than to run water to check the drain! .....As a follow up, I have learned that you do not need to call a Plumber, you can call the City of Edmonton 311, and they will unplug you drain for a fee of $289, including a camera analysis, and if a blockage happens to be found on the City portion, you won't have to pay. Had I known this I could have saved $$$. I am now sharing this with as many people as I can find, rather than use unscrupulous plumbing companies.

Overflow catastrophe!

We had our basement floor drain overflowing, and called Action Auger. The plumber from Action Auger showed up, ran all the faucets upstairs to 'check out the problem' and that caused more water damage and flooding in our basement
!! We told him to leave and had to call another plumber. Now we have to repair drywall damage and water flood damage further caused by this poor quality service call! It is dispicable service!

sink installation

I looked in the phone book and found them to install a sink but I really should have compared prices with other companies first. The service was very good and quick in the end but they were incredibly expensive.
