Moving

I was very happy with service I received from M and M Movers. I had them pack my stuff on Monday September 8/14 and then move us on Tuesday September 9/14. I think they did a great job. It was easy to plan Brent is very helpful and laid back. 4 guys showed up to pack and I cant imagine how I could have done it without their help. The next day 5 guys showed up to the actual move. I had a ton of stuff and they worked hard all day. I would recommend them anytime!

Company Response

Thanks Susan!, I get 2-3 unfair customers a year and of course they are the first to post a review, I do appreciate your review, unfortunately 95% of happy customers don't do reviews and I don't pay Home-Stars like alot of movers for an unfair advantage. My customer satisfaction rate is 93-96%. I realize your move cost nearly $4,000, so it is refreshing for your comments about a large and complicated move. Packing services are great and eliminates alot of stress for moving day. Brent

Recent Move

Dec 9 2014 - I've received automated notices from Homestars that Brent's response was updated on these dates after my last update of Oct 7th -- Oct 7, Oct 10, Nov 17, Nov 18, Nov 22, Nov 23 and Dec 8th. That is 7 TIMES that he has changed or revised his story after my last response. Really? Why keep changing the story 2 months after the fact?? I think this kind of behaviour speaks for iteself. Enough said.

------------------------------------------------------------------

* As I write this on Oct 7, 2014, Brent's response has been completely re-written 3 times now. He appears to have a need to be right and can't admit that he or his company are in any way at fault. I have maintained the history of my review and responses below, the only difference being this top portion is my 3rd response.

I've already established that Brent cost me several hundred dollars more than expected and more than quoted from other movers yet he maintains that he saved me $500 dollars. This is false. Then to further suggest that I send the alleged $500 saved (which wasn't) to 'donate' to his family's charity is both arrogant and totally irrelevant to this forum and the topic of this review. It's total nonsense. The bottom line is that Brent quoted the job but when the job took longer than expected, having had full prior knowledge of the elevator situation and relevant facts when quoting, he back-pedaled and did not want to honour the contract he established. When I spoke on the phone with him he didn't really want to give any ground but I told him that I wasn't paying the full price in light of our contract. I was more than fair with him by only deducting 1 hour, but I was really expecting him to honour his agreement in full - which he didn't want to do. There is no skirting around the issue. It is obvious that when a quote works, he "honours" it and gives himself a pat on the back, but when it doesn't, there is some kind of excuse. My point here is that using this kind of marketing tactic of guaranteed pricing is misleading and it should not be used unless adhered to. For crying out loud, we only had a 3 bedroom condo apartment on one floor, the elevator situation was ridiculously overblown, how long does it take to move a 3 bedroom apartment? 11 hours? Really? I've said everything that needs saying, hopefully Brent won't reply with more nonsense - or - an entirely new response again.

------------------------------------------------
I would not hire this company again.

My experience was mixed - with positives and negatives.

The movers were late by almost an hour (45 minutes) and showed up already tired. They took a break after being there only an hour or less. They asked us to go out and buy them coffee and muffins almost as soon as they got there (they offered to pay but we insisted on paying. We also bought them all lunch).

The move took a lot longer than I was informed by the company that they would take. My friends and I moved in 4 years earlier in 2.5 hours, it took 7.5 to move out essentially the same amount of stuff. In fact, we had more than 4 large glass tables that we got rid of after being quoted but before the move and weren't even included in the move but were in the quote - that would have needed to be wrapped and handled with care.

I had a "price guarantee" quote which already included cushion time and the move went even 3.5 hours longer than that. I was 'informed' that the price guarantee would not be honoured and I would have to pay by the hour because there was only 1 elevator in our building and the movers could not put it on service. However, a representative came out to view the premises and commented on the elevator after he came up the same elevator noticing that there was only 1 and walked our premises to give a quote. I informed him at the time that it would have to be shared because there were many elderly people in our building. I would assume that would be taken into consideration after being discussed.

That said, movers DID even receive a service key early into the move and were able to put the elevator on service when they needed to. Such a big deal about only having 1 elevator, people move in and out all the time in several hours. People that live in the building do not tie up the elevator for long periods of time, it is only a 4 story building, so once you get it, you hold it, load it and unload it in a few minutes, done! They insisted the elevator was the issue, but in reality, the hallway is huge, it takes nothing to move an entire load to the hallway, then grab the elevator, load everything in at once, then unload it all at once in several minutes or less elevator time if you are organized -- I know because we've done it ourselves when we moved in and I was able to move the majority of stuff myself at that time. To me this wasn't the issue, the movers were discouraged when they realized only 1 elevator and spent a bunch of time contacting head office to discuss the situation instead of getting going right away, and disorganized and tired when they arrived already late. They appeared overworked and under-rested, and obviously hungry having asked us to go and get them something after just getting there. It was pretty obvious from the get go. Fine, everyone has a bad day from time to time, I'll give them that.

Aside from this, the elevator situation and facts were known and discussed up front when an on-site quote was given. The job was either obviously mis-quoted, or, there was something else at play but the movers never had to wait very long to get the elevator.

What is the point of a price guarantee if the company offering it doesn't honour it 100%? In my business dealings, when I misquote something I've eaten the cost, not the customer. Perhaps retention and goodwill are not as important as in other repeat businesses because the chances of you hiring again anytime soon is slim unless you move a lot - I can only speculate?? I did negotiate a reduced fee by only 1 hour, but still paid several hundred more than expected. After an 11.5 hour moving day - for which I helped more than I would have liked, having sciatica and pain associated with it right now - I didn't really feel like arguing.

The fact of the matter is the principle, it really torques me the wrong way when people do not honour what they say and agree to when they have been mistaken. Saying that they did not realize after the fact, when I clearly remember it was a prominent discussion point, doesn't fly with me. Just insisting that "I would never do that, I've been in business a long time and know better" is not a valid point when there is a contract and clear memory of the discussion by the customer, and the vendor has VISITED THE SITE to quote.

It wasn't all negative. On the plus side, they were willing to work with me a bit on the price, but they should have honoured the agreement fully.

Other pluses - I felt the guys worked slowly in the beginning, but they were careful for the most part with the things that mattered (a few things got dropped here and there but important stuff looked after). They really hauled butt at the end of the move. The move in went much better than the move out, they worked much harder, organized, faster and they were very careful with our stuff not damaging walls which were just painted, nor furniture or anything else -- they were careful and good, perhaps a little too careful wrapping everything, but in the final analysis, when things aren't damaged it makes for a much happier customer so it is justified -- especially valuable stuff like tables and furniture. Good job on being careful.

Constructively, they should make a conscious effort to not argue in public amongst themselves as much though. I witnessed it and we received many comments from people in our building about this as well as the amount of time they held up the elevator and the length of time it took them to move out.

Other pluses, the movers were decent guys, helpful for the most part any way they could be. They work hard and we did give them a $100 tip that I felt they deserved, overall.

They mentioned to me several times how they work 12-14 or more hours a day, in fairness, how can you expect movers or anyone else to be efficient and on the ball working like that day in and day out. Especially when not young guys, which they weren't. Definitely not an easy job to have and one of the main reasons I didn't dig my heels in and tell management that I wouldn't pay a penny over the guaranteed contract price.

There's more, but I've said more than I intended to. I'm sure there will be a response, "he said she said", as there always are when differences arise, but I feel my assessment of the situation and opinion of the experience is accurate. I'm sure not every move goes like ours did and there are many good experiences, that said, based on my overall experience with all players involved in the process, I would not recommend nor hire again.

My response to Brent's comments...

"The movers contacted the office immediately after arriving explaining the problem with the elevator." THEY WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO IF THE JOB WAS QUOTED AND EXPLAINED TO THEM PROPERLY. "I personally came earlier to do the estimate and I own the company, sharing the elevators with others was not discussed as he now tries to insist." OF COURSE IT WAS DISCUSSED. YOU NOTICED THERE WAS ONLY 1 ELEVATOR RIGHT AWAY. "If so pay fair value and I would have sent more movers because now the crew had to work late." YOUR PRICES ARE NOT FAIR VALUE? IT ENDED UP COSTING ME HUNDREDS MORE THAN OTHER QUOTES IN THE FINAL RESULT AS YOU CALL IT. "He broke the terms of the contract and used this against us." I BROKE THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT? YOU WROTE UP THE CONTRACT WITH A PRICE GUARANTEE - YOU BROKE THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT. WHAT KIND OF NONSENSE IS THIS. "Didn't pay his bill in full, he paid a final amount according to HIS terms after I spoke to him, no damages, and I saved him over $500.00 from another mover, this is the end result." I PAID HUNDREDS MORE THAN THE PRICE I WAS GUARANTEED, IT COST HUNDREDS MORE THAN OTHER QUOTES SO NO IT DID NOT SAVE ME 500 FROM OTHER MOVERS IT COST ME MORE. WHERE DID YOU EVEN GET THIS INFORMATION, PULLED IT OUT OF THIN AIR? END RESULT IS JUST THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU HAVE STATED. "He did get a key for the elevator after the movers insisted but we still had to share the elevators." IN FACT YOUR GUYS SPENT TIME HUNTING AROUND THE BUILDING FOR THE KEY. I DIDN'T USE NOR NEED A KEY WHEN I MOVED IN AND IT WORKED OUT JUST FINE AND MUCH FASTER, WE JUST HELD THE ELEVATOR FOR 3-5 MINUTES TO LOAD AND UNLOAD EACH TIME NOT 20 MINUTES. "I took a regular cheque from him after discussing the final bill., he told ME what amount he wanted to pay and wrote a cheque accordingly." I ONLY DEDUCTED 1 HOUR OFF OF THE TOTAL TIME YOU WANTED TO BILL ME AT 11.5 HOURS WHICH I PAID FOR 10.5 AND THE PRICE GUARANTEE WAS FOR 8, WHICH I MIGHT ADD WAS HIGHER THAN THE TIME ESTIMATED JUST IN CASE, ALREADY. I PAID FOR ALL BREAKS TAKEN, BREAKFAST AND LUNCH. HMMM. "The truck was unloaded fast as I told him it would be." I WILL GIVE YOU THAT, IT WAS UNLOADED FAIRLY QUICKLY. "When the movers arrived they called the office immediately and told me they had to share the elevator with other people in the building and the move would take longer." THAT'S FUNNY, BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME THAT YOU MISQUOTED THE JOB AND THAT THEY BETTER LET THEIR BOSS KNOW RIGHT AWAY, PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO GET PAID. "I spoke to Dave several times and had him pay whatever he thought was fair at the end." I THOUGHT WHAT WAS FAIR WAS THE ACTUAL CONTRACT, BUT I PAID MORE THAN I SHOULD HAVE. "Nothing was damaged." AS FAR AS I CAN TELL (ALL BOXES HAVE NOT BEEN UNPACKED YET) I WOULD SAY THIS IS TRUE. " I would have taken more of a loss if he insisted, he broke the terms of the contract." THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE MORE OF A LOSS THAN 1 HOUR? I ESTABLISHED THAT YOU IN FACT BROKE YOUR OWN CONTRACT, WHAT NONSENSE SAYING THAT I BROKE THE CONTRACT. " He was very pleasant at the end of the move, I again explained to him, I cannot guarantee time to load a truck if we have to share an elevator." YOU TOLD ME THIS AFTER YOU QUOTED A GUARANTEED PRICE AND AFTER THE MOVE WAS IN PROGRESS, ONCE YOU HAD MY STUFF IN YOUR TRUCK. "Most reasonable people understand this." MOST REASONABLE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW A CONTRACT WORKS, YOU WROTE THE CONTRACT. " I am surprised at his review, he received the same great movers the other reviews talk about." YOU SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED, YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TRANSPIRED." He saved significant money from other movers." I ALREADY ESTABLISHED THAT JUST THE OPPOSITE WAS THE FINAL RESULT AS YOU CALL IT. " I don't think I will ask him for a donation for 3rd world children ( read my family's background)" THIS COMMENT IS JUST IN POOR TASTE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I HAVE OR HAVE NOT DONATED AND TO WHICH CAUSES. THAT BEING SAID, WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THIS SITUATION AND WHO CARES WHO YOU CLAIM YOUR FAMILY TO BE AS A WAY TO ESTABLISH SOME KIND OF CREDIBILITY IN THIS FORUM. THIS IS NONSENSE. What could this company do to improve their services?
Honour their contracts 100%. Be more diligent quoting if giving a "price guarantee". Don't use that just as a marketing tactic, honour it.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Work with someone that is personally referred by a trusted associate, friend or family member.

Company Response

It is December 9th now, I have tried to shorten my response on several occasions, this complaint is simply over $200.00, (no damages according to Dave) which Dave suggested to pay after talking to me at the end of the move, he also tipped the movers $100.00 indicating all was fine, and was happy that the unloading went faster than what I had estimated, his quote in WRITING NEVER STATED I guaranteed it without the elevators on service, ( this is common sense and a standard in our industry) the amount he paid was HIS suggestion, I take regular cheques he could have paid less and I would have accepted that he is the customer. He never contacted me after the move to say he had second thoughts on the amount he suggested he pay because the elevators were not on service causing a delay e.t.c. when loading the Truck ( he did get a key at 1 point, but we still had to share the elevator with tenants e.t.c.) He said their may have being a misunderstanding on how a "Guaranteed" quote works. He refers to me in his review as a "Sales Rep" when in fact I am the owner, movers don't guarantee quotes when elevators cannot be on service. He had a quote of $160.00 hr plus the cost of insurance from another mover , I was $110.00hr INCLUDING insurance. . He did not pay for all the hours we worked which was fine with me, he is the customer. I had no idea he was upset until reading his long worded review , he indicated to me he was happy when I spoke to him at the end of the move. I want to thank all my great customers who know that I am a preacher who is adamant about support for 3rd World Children, and support my family's causes such as our free Medical Clinic in Mexico for Children (,Mabels Free Clinic, founded by my dad Dr Keith Routley) and my Familys work with minor hockey ( my Grandfather Frank Smith is in the hockey hall of fame for creating Pee-Wee, Midget, Bantam divisions, he is the founder of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, I am in charge of his affairs, go to mandmmovingsystems.ca for more info,) I may still edit this review on occasion when I have the proper time. I wan't to be accurate and short. I do wish Dave and his Italian family a GREAT and MERRY Christmas, he is just simply wrong in his opinion of me and my family, I quite often take losses on moves because I take regular cheque's , this is suppose to avoid reviews like this, not everybody is honest in today's world, if you have heard me preach, I say today's society judges in a negative mannor based on incomplete information. I will be brief and precise, here are the facts after reading Dave's "Long worded" response. This complaint is simply about $200.00 extra which he agreed to pay after the move, he claims I knew about the elevator situation, I Claim I really didn't, I personally dealt with him, not a "Sales" rep as he states, this is why I think we may have miscommunicated, I really don't care about $200.00. he never complained to me on moving day about the movers, so of course I concluded it was the elevator situation that caused the delay in the move. He had a quote of $160.00hr from another mover, I was $110.00hr for 3 men, thats why I claim I saved him over $500.00. The movers have a great track record and moved Dave without any damages which is my main goal. Have a good Holiday Season Dave, perhaps we have both learned from this. Brent Routley

Moving

I was given a quote from Brent that would save me 600.00 as compared to another moving company. I decided to hire m and m movers and I was not disappointed. The three movers were kind, helpful and hardworking. The worked hard and were very careful with our furniture. They were prompt and efficient in their work. They wrapped up and protected all my furniture with boxes, plastic wrapping and blankets. I was very satisfied with the service and with the price. I would not hesitate to recommend them and would use them again. Thank you!

Moving from Mississauga to St Catharines

Brent contacted me on the telephone initially, offering to provide a moving quote. I agreed to meet with him, I actually had thought I made a decision with who I was going with. But it was his industry knowledge that convinced me to meet with him and obtain a quote. I am glad I did.
But Brent made some suggestions I didn't consider. I actually interviewed about 8 other movers. No one came close with a fixed price guarantee and lower if less hours.
The others movers one was a little less but no guarantee possible 10% additional if over time.
It was Brent with his knowledge and guarantee that finalized our decision to go with him. This was a good decision. Moving is stressful enough but these guys came through and eliminated lot of stress. They were professional, tireless, relentless, very pleasant and careful.
Our move ended right on the estimated time including travel time as it was 1 hour's drive from Mississauga to St. Catharines and including a dinner break.. Our stuff was handled with care. No major damage, we had one broken knob on an antique radio, this is repairable not by any stretch major damage. Reality is furniture is being moved and humans are involved.
On moving day all moving supplies (wrap, wardrobe boxes, etc.) were supplied free of charge.
Only suggestion is for Brent to please call the day before the move to re-confirm everything is good to go. Other than that I would highly recommend M&M movers as great choice to be your next movers!
Thanks Brent and special thanks to our moving team on Mar 8, 2014.
Note to potential Movers:
• Don’t order Pizza these guys they have had more than their share of Pizza! LOL. We ordered Swiss Chalet and it was a big hit!
• When you are planning a move start early and start getting rid of stuff ASAP, use Kijiji or Facebook, garage sales if weather permits, when you think you have gotten rid of stuff go back a 2nd & 3rd time. It’s like the iceberg effect you will discover that you have 2x more than you think you have!

Move from Toronto to Vaughan

Brent from M&M attended our 3 bedroom home in Etobicoke to give us a !!GUARANTTEED!! Quote for our move. Brent also provided us with complimentary moving boxes for packing. On moving day all moving supplies (wrap, wardrobe boxes, etc.) were supplied free of charge. The movers were wonderful- they took great care of our belongings and were very nice to our 2 toddlers. The move took more time than was estimated but we were luckily protected by the price guarantee. I would absolutely recommend using M and M Movers for your next move. We paid a total of $1500 which included tax and tip ($200) It was well worth it!

Thanks Natalie! I just dealt with a very dishonest customer , so your review is much appreciated. The cold weather can slow down moves, and we do absorb the extra cost because of the extra time required to move furniture in the cold. Thanks again Brent

The cost of our move

Prior to our move we paid $250.00 as a deposit. On moving day the movers claimed we didn't pay a deposit but my wife said we paid $200 (by mistake)and paid the balance. After contacting Brent at least 4 times he assured me he would refund the $50 overpayment. I'm still waiting and no longer trust him to live up to his word.I believe when a deal is made it should be honored.
It's interesting to note some of the other customer comments and Brent's reply because he thinks a negative comment should be discussed with him to resolve the concern.Well, he's not very good at resolving my concern.

Now that everyone can see that Brent responded about " this guy technically owes us money" I would like to know how. We had an agreed upon price and we erroneously overpaid because my wife thought the deposit was $200 - not $250. The move was done in less time than the estimate so we certainly don't owe for extra time.
Brent also said " my business partner did some extra work after the move that saved the customer $150". Please elaborate on this Brent because after the move we never saw you or your partner again. What did he do? Besides I go back to our deal with you that you quoted on and we paid.
Additionally Brent goes on to say " I can give more specifics on how we saved this customer $150 about 2 weeks after the move and how he owes us money and despite this I agreed to refund $50". I have 2 comments here : (1) please tell me how you saved us $150 and how we owe you this and (2) you may have agreed to refund us the $50 ( which is true because you told me that on more than 2 occasions) but this is now Jan 7,2014 and I first notified you on October 24, 2013. Canada post might be slow from time to time but his seems a bit of a stretch.
My only concern is that I feel I am not dealing with an honorable person who lives up to his word.
Reply number 2 to Brent's comments.
I don't technically owe you any money. We had a contract for a fixed price and that is what we paid - plus the overpayment of $50 which is still the issue. Brent said he issued a cheque in December and has a witness. Well maybe he has a witness to issuing a cheque but as of January 11, 2014 I still don't have it. Maybe he issued it with no intentions of mailing it.
He goes on to say that he saved me over $150 for returning a lost cushion. Well we never issued a claim for it but simply advised him at the end of the move that a cushion was missing. Also my wife mentioned it to the movers before they left after the move and they said they didn't have it.I don't recall anything in the contract regarding a $150 charge for processing a claim. If there is it sounds to me like an underhanded way for him to increase his revenue by holding back an item belonging to a customer and then charging for it when it is returned.
Brent obviously doesn't like negative comments - which is understandable - but there wouldn't have been any if he had issued and mailed the cheque in a timely manner. I'm still waiting for it.
I find he also rambles a lot and tries to introduce meaningless diatribe to the issue at hand. What does his charitable contributions have to do with my concern. I'm sure in our own way we all help our own favorite charity but don't brag about it.
Brent I hope there in no future need for me to reply to your replies but if there is perhaps I should let you know there is enough information in our correspondence for a Small Claims Judge to rule in my favor. Be forewarned.
Jan 21/14. You're still commenting about making the cheque back in December but I still haven't received it. You shouldn't be surprised by my comments because they are all the truth. You knowingly didn't mail it and you gave me two different excuses for what was taking so long. You also did not save me $150 - you simply had a lost cushion returned that should have been delivered with the rest of the furniture on moving day. How can you call returning property to me that you lost or misplaced a saving of $150 to me?
Brent send the cheque and I will let the world know tou honored your deal.
Jan 22/2014. Thanks for your reply Brent. I await your legal action. Actually I'm looking forward to it. Besides I don't think you can hire a lawyer for $50 but maybe you think it's the principle that matters. Well so do I so don't be surprised if we end up in small claims court. I have both the patience and time.

M and M Moving moved this guy successfully, no damages, and ahead of schedule, we found him to be very rude throughout the move and difficult, his final bill was LESS than the guaranteed quote. We Issued a refund cheque of $50.00 over the holidays, he is aware of why he didn't get it earlier, I personally explained this to him on the phone, considering all we did I thought we had a happy customer, his wife was happy ( He had a lost item claim , so we waited until this was resolved, which it was saving him $150.00 deductible for a claim, my business partner found the item and delivered it to him personally, he lies about never seeing my business partner again, weird) This customer admits no damages and the total cost was LESS than the guaranteed maximum. The movers never disputed the deposit they simply asked the customer how much was the deposit and the customer gave them the wrong amount, this guy is lying. ( he lies several times with this review, the issue is simply about when he will get a $50.00 refund, that's it) We saved this guy potentially $150.00 from a lost item claim despite his poor attitude towards us. (we could have just said we couldn't find his missing item and he would have had to pay $150.00 deductible for a claim, the item was less than $150.00, my business partner who he claimed he never saw again after the move delivered it to him about 2 wks after the move, and we never disputed any deposit on the move) We find this complaint bizarre and untruthful, he did make it clear to me he doesn't care about my family's humanitarian work and he want's to make things difficult for me because of his mistake in judgement. He was moved with no damages and ahead of schedule, and we found a missing item saving him $150.00, this is the final result of his move. Brent Routley
