Midtown Kitchen & Dining Room

Karen and her team designed my dining room and kitchen. From start to finish I found the team extremely professional and Karen to be knowledgeable and kind as she navigated my many (many!) questions. My kitchen is a thing of beauty. Karen pays attention and really listened to me, she swayed me from my usual neutral-palate in the dining room into doing something more interesting and introduced a bold feature wall. She saw a framed picture of Audrey Hepburn in my foyer (my Mom had taken it when she met Audrey on a trip in the 60's) and suggested a Tiffany turquoise. So happy I did this, it defines the space and has a personal connection. I was kept in the loop the entire time about how we were tracking expense-wise, her design team was great to deal with and her work-crew left my home clean. Thank you Sealy Design for creating a space I love (with more storage; genius!) keeping me informed and on-budget, and being so fabulous to work with.

Couldn’t be happier!

Main floor and kitchen renovation. Karen was great at seeing the end product/space and is able to beautifully balance form, function, beauty and budget. Suggested we move a wall to gain another 12” inches from an oversized closet which turned out to be a game changer!! Provided suggestions that I hadn’t thought of, but turned out to make all the difference. Karen is a “Master of Space”, finding function in the least obvious places. Her staff was very responsive and helpful. Will absolutely use her again!

Ongoing Design Services

We have been working with Karen and Sealy Design for over 15 years on multiple design projects both large and small. In each instance, we have been incredibly impressed with Karen and her team. Sealy Design not only provides exceptional design and project management services, but they are also extremely professional and always willing to go that extra mile. On several occasions, Karen has gone above and beyond what was expected or required. Most recently, she travelled 3+ hours for a site visit for our new reno project. In this specific case, upon her arrival she realized that home had several dangerous gas leaks. Not only did Karen take the lead in rectifying the issues as we were not onsite, she updated us throughout the day. Despite the less than ideal working conditions, was able to complete her originally planned tasks to ensure that we still are on track to complete our project. We truly would be lost without her and I highly recommend her services to anyone.

Sealy Design saved the day, correction project

I was already working with another designer who I liked but wasn't understanding my vision and I felt wasn't fully versed on the construction side of things. So when I had just about given up that this was going to happen (after investing $7200) I was feeling deflated (to say the least). A neighbour recommended Karen and I thought Id meet wither her and see if there was any hope. I didn't have great expectations but by the end of our first meeting (3.5 hours) I knew not only was it feasible but Sealy Design could make it happen.

We wrapped up in June and I couldn't be happier with my great room/kitchen overhaul. There was water damage to deal with and some other headaches but the entire team at Sealy and the contractor they recommended made it all possible. I've been entertaining all summer and have had rave reviews from family and friend's and just wanted to say thank you and send gratitude for helping me through a difficult time and project.

Kitchen power room

From the beginning I was very clear Of my budget of 80000 when they started billing me for such large amount for there services we couldn’t understand as the kitchen had little design changes. I made several calls with my concerns. I dealt with the contractor on my own no Junior designer is ever around or could answer simply questions. Karen came once for a visit when I was out of town which I told them I would like to me home did not feel like a client and in no way accommodate me
thought going with Sealy design and reading reviews I was in good hands. From the beginning there was a lack Of Communication and care interest Would not get back to me. Seemed more interested in billing me hours that I still could not understand. ney and stay clear of Sealy design. Several

I found Sealy design to be very dishonest did not stay with in are budget Bad customer service lacked interest promised 5000 deposit back did not receive. Stay clear of Sealy design would only go directly with a design centre. This is my third renovation and this is by far the worst experience I had. Save your money.

There are many half-truths in the above review and we will address each:

Design & Budget:
- Overall design included not just the kitchen and powder room, but as we proceeded the client added other areas of the home (family room; living room, front hall, dining room)
- The overall design was a fairly major change - removing walls and a complete update with twice as much cabinetry as her previous design.

Communication & Process:
- Based on a client’s needs/wants we create “Next Steps” quotes that our clients must pre-approve before we begin each phase. We send these in advance; receive written approval and then proceed. We deliver exactly what we proposed and bill exactly what we quoted. If at any time Sharon Bishop didn’t agree with anything we were proposing she could have changed the scope/our tasks or not approved at all.
- We keep detailed time-sheets and Sharon was one of our clients who we spent extra time communicating with. There were many additional site visits/calls that weren’t billed to the client, but seemed necessary for her.
- The one site meeting Sharon mentioned when she was out of town was necessary to answer trades questions and to keep things moving. At the time she was happy to not hold up the project and approved my going by in her absence.
- Trades and on site work- this is directed by a very detailed set of schedules and drawings and there is very little for clients to do. Some clients are by nature on site/in the home so they do interact but it isn’t necessary.

Billing:
- All clients provide a retainer to begin. The $5,000 we collected at the beginning of the project was with Sharon's permission & allocated to purchasing product and paying for delivery fees of said product. The client received paid invoices for these showing the deducted amount from the retainer. At the end of the project this money was depleted with her knowledge. We also provided the client with an excel document outlining all invoices and payments.

NOTE- Calling our team dishonest is untrue and slanderous and we have reached out to a lawyer to get official input on this. We were shocked to read this as when we last communicated on Jan 8 2019 Sharon said “Kitchen looks great, bright airy and clean. I love it!” At this time our team offered to help out with some minor inconveniences in other areas of the home (at no charge), such as a remote control for an older model fan and other tweaks for things outside of our scope.

total house reno and 2nd property rental

Sealy design is a one stop shop. They provide everything you need in a renovation. There is no doubt they are not the cheapest but I will say that they save you money in the long run in making the right decisions the first time around and they apply their designer discounts/designer only stores onto their clients that you wouldn't have access to. They think outside the box and have really creative visions that we would have never dreamed up. Our renovation was a complete gut and 18" addition. I have since done a 2nd recreational property with Karen 5 years later (this year) and it was another excellent experience. We actually had issues with our kitchen company and Karen helped navigate this awkward situation in a professional manner. I have always felt I can be honest with Karen when I have been unhappy with anything and she has been quick to make it right. With any renovation, things don't always go perfectly, its all in how all parties handle it. I have high standards and Karen's team meets them all. I have referred many friends to Karen who have worked with her team as well and they have all reported how happy they are with the end results.

Kitchen, main bath and master ensuite

I have watched Karen on Cityline for years and have always loved her work. I was not disappointed when I hired Sealy to manage the complete gut and reno of my kitchen, main bath and master ensuite. Karen and her amazing team took care of everything from permits and drawings to having the final peice of artwork hung on my wall. My family and friends can't get over the transformation - I would recommend Sealy Design to anyone!

Main floor renovation

You hear stories about how horrible renovating can be and we are so fortunate that we were able to work with Karen and her Team! They held our hand through every step, explaining as we went. Their process outlines all the things we had to do (homework, like de-cluttering... ugh!) and that they were going to, ie draft for permits etc and exactly how much we would be charged. It was seamless. Now we are enjoying our new gorgeous AND functional space. I sometimes can't believe its really MY kitchen! Thank you Sealy Design!

Redesign and Refurnish the Livingroom

We started this project almost a year ago.
We were promised "one stop shopping". This was not the case ! Once we went to look at furniture and gave them our choices there was no consultation to review the overall look. According to Ms. Sealy there is " Nothing in place" to do this. Our space clearly reflects their lack of caring and refusal to accept any responsibility for the"stale" result.

Lynn, I would like to add some clarity to the items you've mentioned here.

We began our work with you in May and all design work was done and presented to you by October. Then of course ordering custom furniture requires time after that. We set up showroom visits for you to go out and see/sit in/touch all pieces we suggested which you did and we had a call directly afterward to get your feedback. You told us you loved everything! These pieces were made for you so until they are there is no way for us to do more then we did.

After the furniture was delivered one of our senior designers and then later I came by to take a look. I even bought new lamps for you... all at no charge. We all thought the room looked great. Including your neighbour who popped in and your husband.

After we completed our work with you you called about a chair you'd broken and we immediately replaced it no questions asked. Then a while later you called to say that in one spot the drapery track had separated from the wall. We had someone there the next day to repair it.

I think it is clear we definitely care and as for a lack of responsibility the exact opposite is true and clear in our dealings with you even after the job was complete.
