Installation of residential Geothermal Heating System

We, too, hired Barrington to install a heat pump system in 2005-2006. After checking with ECR that he was a reputable contractor, we paid a large-ish deposit and never saw any part of the project completed. We obtained a Small Claims Court judgement against Ron Clare on September 19, 2007 and are now in the process of trying to recover our money.

Approximate cost of services:
$15,000.00

Home Geothermal System

BUYER BEWARE: We also met with Ron Clare owner and only "employee" of Barrington Geothermal. We paid a large deposit in good faith and despite repeated promises nothing was ever delivered/installed and Mr Clare has never returned our deposit. After four visits to Small Claims Court in Hamilton we recently obtained a Judgment Sc-06-02779 against Mr Clare and Barrington Geothermal which we are now enforcing. Mr Clare is a personable individual when you meet him but under no circumstances should anyone do business with him or Barrington Geothermal. Now 2 weeks after the Judgment against him, his phones are disconnected and the Barrington website is down - if you also paid for services never received please join with us and report this to the RCMP at https://recol.ca/intro.aspx?lang=en

Installation of a Ground Source Heat Pump

We signed a contract with Barrington Geothermal and provided a substantial deposit on May 31, 2006 for the installtion of a 5 ton heat pump with air handler and appropriate number of vertical holes in ground. The representative for Barrington Gerthermal was Ron. The contract refers to a 6 week time frame. It's important to note that the contract price was low compared to that quoted by competitors.

On July 13th, Ron delivered a 6 ton heat pump, one ton larger than specified wihtout explanation, and collected a second deposit. He showed us a laminated picture of a new drill head that was being built for him. He promised that after some test drilling near Barrie, it would be used on our installation. In a telephone conversation on August 21, 2006 Ron advised that it would be at least 3 weeks before he would start our job. We are still waiting!! It's been a long 3 weeks.

Several attempts to communicate with Ron via e-mail and voice mail failed to get any response. We were far too patient when Ron didn't follow through with any of his commitments. Our last voice mail message was on February 15, 2007 to a new telphone number that we found on his web site. We asked for our deposit back and have heard nothing from him.

After checking references this time, we have proceeded with ECR's new contractor, Al Davies of EcoOptions, and are very happy.

Geothermal System

Stay far away from this company! We gave a pretty big deposit and never got a thing for it. We too were supposed to have a geothermal system installed in winter 2005-06 by Barrington. First we were told we were waiting on a new drill that was coming in January of 2006. We kept calling and getting excuses. Finally Mr. Clare stopped answering our calls and emails. We too contacted ECR and ECR put us in contact with a new Ontario ECR rep. Our system will be completed in the next couple of days and we are very happy with the new contractors. Unfortunately, this site will not permit us to give a VERY POOR rating.

Installation of a Geothermal system

Barrington Geothermal took my money and never delivered. Barrington was contracted to install a geothermal system in winter 2005-06. After the installation of the duct system and the HRV, this company has never delivered the ECR geothermal equipment and never drilled the hole. I was able to move on my project with the intervention of ECR. Barrington contracted for the drilling but I was left to pay the driller. The advance cash provided to purchase the ECR equipment was never returned by Barrington Geothermal and I have to pay for the equipment again.
The new dealer representing Ontario is quite competent. People should not dealt with this company and should go on the ECR site to obtain proper dealer references.

Geothermal

Word of caution

Ron has good knowledge on geothermal.

BUT

He is behind in all his installs

He will ask for a large deposite then he won't start the job.

His big line is next week.
I would call when he dosn't show, only to hear next week.

Only after contacting ECR, the manufacture of the geothermal pump did something start. My project took 16 months to finish.

To finish I removed the old furnace and installed the new air handler my self . I contacted the driller direct. Who was easy to deal with. The new dealer (AC guy )for ECR was used to finish the system.
The driller and AC guy where delt with directly and payed directly.

Before using him check references and ECR

Company Response

This was the first client on a new type of geothermal equipment
we were selling.
We were just setting our subtrades in line to do drilling etc.
The client got the equipment at my cost. The firms for drilling and
A/C instalation were from our contractor list, and the client was
given the contact information and the work again was done at cost
and yes the client paid them directly. He removed his old equipment and
insatlled the air handler as this was to keep the cost down.
