Cost - $33K for torch on roof/chimney masonry repair Issues: 1. Poor quality - roof leaking from an overhang onto our deck only 1.5 months after completion. Somehow, the angle doesn't allow the water to drain onto the drain. So, now, our deck (which is also new) has a pool of water on the floor from the roof. Apparently, we have to PAY EXTRA to have this fixed when it was their installer who did not foresee that the slope was not enough to drain properly. This is a new roof. To be charged extra to fix a poorly installed roof is ludicrous. 2. Poor responsiveness - email, called, texted, sent videos...(god knows what else) since September 20 2021 about this problem. It is now November 5 2021, and nothing has been done. Their rep/manager has gone MIA after being paid in FULL and wouldn't answer any of our calls/emails. Note: this work is supposed to be guaranteed. 3. Lack of professionalism: a. In the summer, they promised to finish the job before our daughter's birthday because we didn't want their trash container in our driveway for the guests to see. Job was finished literally 2 months after the birthday. And, they didn't pick up after themselves prior to the birthday. My husband and I had to pick up garbage that the crew has left on our yard (empty water bottles just thrown from the roof while working, food packaging, etc.). b. I had a very strange interaction where insults and curses were thrown at me because I gave one of their crews an earful for not answering/confirming when they were going to come to finish the job. On that day, we had an appointment with a medical specialist who we waited 8 months to see. The crew member gave us a couple of days notice. When I reprimanded him, he started yelling and cursing profanities at me and just drove off. When asked by their manager, apparently I made comments about his culture and said I was racist (untrue!!!). Hire at your own risk. I'm writing this to keep the pressure on this company to fix the work's defect. Right now, we have a bucket, catching the drips from a new roof that cost us $33K to install!!!

Work not bad, but highly unreliable. Hire at your own risk. Not only did Daniel (the owner) started the job months after he first said he was going to start, but he also DID NOT finish it! Was paid in full (except for the final $500) and essentially ran away with the money. Did not finish the job because he got called out on NOT delivering a product when he was supposed to and that other contractors were depending on (he didn't understand this. he didn't get that other contractors had been booked and paid when his product didn't show up when he promised it would). He said he was going to deliver on a particular day. We booked an excavator to finish the work. Lo and behold, the said product was NOT delivered. We called him out and he didn't like it. The said product was something we already paid for (he said he was saving us cash and that's why he couldn't get it to us on time...uh, we paid for it already and it was a part of the price. So, was he saving HIMSELF some cash?). Quote was initially for $6000+ but went up to $10000+. And we paid this, no questions asked because we thought he was professional. We have a paper trail of all the interactions. Also, in terms being unprofessional, we tried numerous times to contact this guy to reschedule the work...NEVER GOT ANY RESPONSE BACK! No texts, no emails, no whatsapp messages, no phone calls. He said he doesn't respond to belligerent messages. I can provide samples of these "belligerent" messages and you tell me if they were belligerent. The work sat, thanks to him, because we couldn't book an excavator again for months in the summertime. In the end, he just said keep the $500 and I'm not finishing the work. EDIT (in response to company reply) - based on the company response below, it is clear that they take NO responsibility for situations they caused. Walking away from a job is NOT ethical - especially if you had been paid in full (which he did not contest below)! We find out later that Daniel had taken on a cash cow job in West Van at the same time and had used this as an excuse to move on to "bigger things." Bottom line - Daniel will screw you over for money. Also, not only did the work sit unfinished, but they also left a bunch of garbage in our yard (broken wheelbarrows, rusty tools, toolboxes etc.) because they did not come back to clean up after themselves. What professionals would do that? And 98% complete? The new guy took 2 days to finish! They were all cosmetic/final touches he had to do too, so it wasn't like he was just cutting and slapping stones on top of each other. Wow! The lack of accountability is baffling...and quality job it isn't. Water pooling now where it is not supposed to. Please save yourselves the headache and hire somebody else.

Company Response

DDW Hardscapes acknowledges that this particular job was indeed not completed, which is extremely unfortunate and we were disappointed at this outcome as well.

However, there are certain circumstances where a contractor has a right to leave a job, and unfortunately this was one of them.

In the entire duration DDW Hardscapes has been in operation, this is the only time that we did not complete a job. We did bring this job to 98% completion (including the added scope, which is what resulted in the revised quote) and are happy to share the photos of the quality work we did.

If anyone has concerns or questions about this review, we welcome a conversation. Additionally, we are happy to provide many references of satisfied customers.

Pros: easy to schedule an appointment, on time for appointment; Cons: lack of accountability for errors/mistakes, unprofessional reply to customers' complaint. Here's the gist: Rob forgot to close the pipe when he shut down our boiler which left the water dripping until late night. If we had not gone down to the basement, we wouldn't have found out. The floor was soaked and took an hour to clean the mess. We had to throw away a couple of area rugs because they were disgusting! If we had not figured out what was missed, it could've caused a lot more issues not to mention the potential for mold if the area had not been dried properly. His response when we alerted him to this issue (copied and pasted directly from his email): "Hi, Sorry, it was an honest mistake. As you seem more concerned about a little water on the floor more than the safety risk your old boiler could have caused, please disregard any invoice sent to you. The “costs” you could have incurred from your boiler could have been more than monetary." Our take: Thank you, Rob, for pointing out we need a new boiler which, by the way, other professionals would have been able to do as well. The point is he made an error but was too proud to own up without sounding condescending. We went with Rob because he was recommended, but I guess we'll be looking elsewhere. Oh and he was going to send us an invoice...really???? ************************************************************************************ Furnace Inspection - Continued (November 7 2014) Dear Reader, this is our response to the company's reply below since we cannot add/respond on a different link: I wrote my review above so that OTHERS will understand what happened and prevent any issues through their choice of a company. Even if the review is not as stellar as what the company expects, it is a clear documentation of that facts AS EXPERIENCED by the customer. This website, after all, is an avenue for customers to review companies! And unfortunately, the owner still does not understand the review...his rants just make him look even more unprofessional! We didn't get that furnace fixed to the state he described. So, I don't know why he is going on about the shabby way it was made. We bought the house with that furnace like that. We trusted Rob with our furnace and he caused a flood. I understand the carbon monoxide part and there is no need to copy and paste off "google" to make a point. His words imply that we are irresponsible people by "only caring about money" and not the health hazards of CO. The way he minimized the inconvenience he caused by responding the way he did vexes but does not surprise me, given that "[he is] in the top 10% of [his] field" and we, as customers, know nothing. And, by his response, it also seemed like no other professional (but him) would have been able to detect carbon monoxide levels through the use of a standard detection hand tool (which is what he used). I highly doubt that! THE QUESTION IS: Did he or did he not cause a flood in our basement because HE FORGOT something??? That's the question and that was our complaint!!! The shabby furnace and flood are two unrelated things. Any intelligent human being will see that! There was no flood until he fiddled around with our furnace. - As for his offer to clean up the flood, we discovered it on a Friday night at 9pm (so yes, it had been leaking for 12 hours!). It would be unreasonable to expect us to leave it until we called his guys. It was a great inconvenience and a potential mold issue. What about the health concerns mold presents to a family??? By the way, I saw that Rob (the owner) had been looking us up on social media! If he had to seek out personal and professional information about customers after a bad review, it is frankly very scary, "stalky," and shows a complete lack of professionalism. I will keep the email notification as evidence for any future needs.

Company Response

As we have already done directly to this customer and in response to all the places he has reposted this review: We acknowledge that the screw was left out causing the boiler to drip causing a collection of water on the floor. We apologized several times for any inconvenience this may have caused. We regret that our company was not advised of the mess until several days later thus preventing us from dispatching one of our technicians who are on call 24hours, to attend to the water on the floor. We are relieved that the customer reported that most of the water was soaked up by the area rug and cleaned up in an hour. We have used this experience as an example for our staff and technician training this month. This type of incident and the way the customer feels about our company are not desirable and training is a way to ensure they will not be repeated in the future.
