The washing machine stopped working because it could not drain the water used during the wash cycle.
I called Gold Star Appliance Repair, and a service representative performed many diagnostic tests on the washing machine. After completing the tests, the service representative identified the cause - the drain motor pump had to be replaced. He provided assurance that the rest of the washing machine was in ideal condition ("like brand new condition") and that it made economic sense to proceed with the repair.
The repair was completed on a timely basis and for a very reasonable cost.
