Water filtration

Had a challenging interaction with Simply Smart. My parents were sold a water filtration system they really did not need. We cancelled the contract within 10 days allowed under the Consumer Protection Act clause. In speaking with a representative from Simply Smart stated that there was an $850+tax as a cancellation fee and were not willing to negotiate at all to a reasonable amount. To put this behind my elderly parents, after much back and forth I agreed to pay and posted about my experience online.

A day later another representative from Simply Smart called me and told me that they don't charge cancellation fees when cancelling within the Consumer Protection Act timeframe, and that the other representative was incorrect in doing so. They have told me that they are sending me a refund cheque. I've spent a lot of time and energy helping my parents with this issue, and was frustrated with the first representative I spoke to. The second representative on the other hand was very helpful after I wrote about my experience online.

Water filtration

Warning, do not deal with this company.

Simply Smart used high pressure sales tactics to coerce my senior citizen mother to sign a 10 year water filtration contract. The total cost was $5400+tax and included a clause that allowed them to increase her monthly cost up to 7% per year, not tied to CPI but at their discretion.

Luckily, we were within 10 days of signing the contract and we used the Consumer Protection Act to annul the contract. They offered to have us buy out the equipment for about $1500, which gives you a sense of the huge markup they include in their 10 year contracts. We did not want anything to do with Simply Smart and requested they remove the equipment. They charged me close to $1000 to remove their equipment from my mother's home, and would not negotiate to a more reasonable cost. There's a good reason why the Consumer Protection Act is being updated on March 1, 2018 to stop companies like Simply Smart from profiting through the use of high pressure sales tactics on seniors. It's too bad the updates to the Consumer Protection Act are coming into force too late for us. Don't make the same mistake we did by dealing with this company.
