We were not sure what to do with our cabinets. After investigating replacing them, the cost was over $10,000. We went to Paint Magic and they did a pretest on a cabinet door which turned out beautifully. We decided to go ahead with the whole kitchen. It was easy for us, we just removed the doors and brought them in and in a few weeks they were ready to install. The finish is factory quality and looks great.

Our cabinets looked very dated, original light oak cabinets from the early 1990's. They were still in good shape, so we really didn't want to throw them out. Painting seemed a great way to go, keeping the original look and pattern (which flowed with the house), not to mention saving a ton of money! There is some work on the home owner's part, but anyone who is handy can handle this project. Our cabinets looks brand new and updated, what a transformation.

In terms of Paint Magic, great company. Both Susan and David were very responsive and professional, a pleasure to deal with! We were treated politely and got lots of good advice. They always had time to answer your questions, no matter how often you contacted them.

While I love the concept of painted cabinets we have had nothing but issues with ours since they were finished. Similar to another reviewing they were not packaged probably or dried and we had to go back on three separate occasions to have them redone. Only the last time did they offer to deliver our finished doors back so it was constant running back and forth.

Now that we have had these cabinets a number of months almost every door has cracking in the seams and paint flaking everywhere. I literally have had to touch them up every two weeks since we got them. I emailed to ask them what they were willing to do and have had radio silence. I have also noticed that other than this forum all opportunities to review this company have been blocked. I assume for a reason. I am very disappointed and for the money we spent wish I would have went with a different company.

After 19 years with the same bleached oak cabinets, we decided to look at the cost of replacing our cabinet doors. With a quote from Home Depot, the cost would have been 7500 including new latches and handles and new door. At a 1/3 of the cost, we decided to have our doors painted through Paint Magic. With just a visit to Susan and David's studio, we were sold on the idea of repainting. Removing the doors and dropping them off at the studio was all it took. We chose a colour that we are quite happy with, and are now living in a beautiful new kitchen. They provided us with the paint to do the sides of the cabinets that had the stain, which took some time to complete.. They promised us that it would take about two weeks, which it did. And we picked out our own handles from Lowes. We also received the cabinet doors back to back, but had no problem pulling them apart. So far we are 100% happy with the outcome. Remember, there is work in taking the cabinets off and putting them back on without the hinges, as well as painting the areas that aren't doors. Also, they were quick to give us an estimate and responded immediately to all our enquiries before we committed.

We generally liked the overall appearance of the kitchen cabinets and level of service provided during the selection and DIY installation process. Unfortunately for us, most of the doors were packaged two by two with no paper between them and stuck together; the outer edges had to be repainted also where they stuck to the paper. This may not be a problem with newer doors but older doors may be slightly bowed in the middle causing them to stick together despite the small bumper pads placed at the top and bottom on the outer part of each cabinet door on the inside. Improvements to the drying and packaging process would help with the client satisfaction guarantee advertised by Paint Magic.

My husband and I have been renovating a home with custom oak kitchen cabinets and built-in bookcases. Although the cabinets are made from select oak and probably cost the original owners a small fortune, they are not to our taste. Resurfacing and replacing the cabinets were out of our budget. When we began to discuss the possibility of getting our cabinets spray lacquered, everyone we spoke with said the same thing: “Paint Magic.” Paint Magic is open only by appointment, so we made arrangements to meet the owners – a delightful husband and wife team – Dave and Susan Hawken at their studio located around Main Street. They welcomed us with samples of their work and photos of past projects. Before leaving, we had selected a paint color and new hardware! The way it works is simple – 1) you are given instructions to prepare and paint existing cabinet carcasses (trim, gable, etc.) and remove existing cabinet doors; 2) by following the instructions, you remove the doors, paint the carcasses, and drop the doors off for lacquering; and 2) collect the cabinets when finished and install yourself. My husband and I are very happy with the results! We essentially have a new kitchen at a fraction of the cost. We are so happy that we intend to have the cabinets lacquered again in the future, rather than replaced. Throughout the process, Susan kept us up-to-date – she was quick to respond to emails and even initiated them (a rarity in our home improvement experience). When we found a small imperfection on one of the finished lacquered doors, Dave was excellent about repairing it and doing so quickly. I would not hesitate to recommend Paint Magic to friends, family and colleagues! In fact, I have already begun to.
