Exceptional service and expertise!! have lived in this house for 18 years and the hardwood floors badly needed work. I interviewed half a dozen contractors across the city and got such a range of suggestions that I was totally confused. Bill was the only one who seemed really knowledgeable about the business and was honest about expectations and pricing. With dozens of contractors passing through over the years, Smithwood has been the only one who under promised and overdelivered! It looks like I have a new floor - totally exceeded my expectations!

We were on a very tight deadline with a baby on the way and Bill stepped up to complete a quote and site visit within 24 hours and the job was done a week later- which was much appreciated!

My only comment would be that there was some discoloration that showed through upon completion of the job due to the way the floors were previously treated/sealed. As I'm not an expert on these things I wasn't sure the cause and had to point it out to Bill to get an answer about the cause of the discolouration. Ideally his communication would have been a bit better by addressing this issue with me before I had to bring it up with him. If I was more particular about getting an even finish throughout this would have been a bigger issue but luckily for him the classic grey stain that we chose doesn't need a consistent finish to look good.

We bought an old semi-detached house near High Park. It had wall-to-wall carpet, probably installed in the 80s. We had the carpet ripped up and discovered the original hardwood - face-nailed 3/8" rift and quarter-sawn oak. Unfortunately it was in rough shape - the previous owners had put screws through it trying to get the squeaks out. We brought Bill from Smithwood Floors in for a consultation. Even speaking to him on the phone he already had an idea of what was in the house based on the description and the location - his family has been in this business for a long time. He came to see the floors in person and advised they were too worn down to be refinished well, but the stairs could be sanded and refinished, which was consistent with what others had told us. He gave us an estimate for replacing the floor and it was not cheap! However, he gave us a sensible recommendation for period-correct replacement floor that fit the house's style, with slightly wider planks to modernize the floor without looking out of place. He showed us some samples and it did indeed look much better than the pre-finished floors available at the big box stores.

Bill also gave us advice about how to cut costs by removing the existing floor, screwing down the subfloor, and installing the quarter-round ourselves (or hiring someone else to do it), and let his people do what they specialize in. He was happy to do the other work - but he would have to charge more for it than others might. I thought this was professional and gave us options to save some money without compromising on the quality of the finished work. In terms of payment - we paid for the wood after it was delivered to our home, and payment for the work was delivered after the work was done to our satisfaction.

The finished result was beautiful site-finished, custom-stained rift and quarter-sawn 3/4" Northern oak in long planks, with 3 coats of polyurethane. It was done in about 1 1/2 weeks. It cost more than going to Home Depot but we think it was worth it.

Smithwood Floors did an excellent job refinishing the 100 year old oak floors in our house. They arrived early to every meeting, finished the work on time, were very helpful with any questions I had, and the result of their work is beautiful. The whole house has a new glow because of the newly refinished floors. We are very happy that we found Smithwood Floors.

We had all of the wood flooring on our main floor in our circa 1940's tudor torn out and replaced and finished on site by Smithwood Floors. I had no clue what to pick, what direction the wood should run etc. Bill helped me pick the best wood and style for my home as well as took care to deal with all the details necessary to make it look flowing and seamless but authentic. The floors are absolutely perfect. The job was completed quickly, in a very detailed and professional manner. I couldn't be happier. Very high quality work and results.
