Energy Audit, Removal of Insulation, Air Sealing & Installation of New Insulation

Home NRG was recommended to me by a representative working for the Mike Holmes Home Inspection Group that I hired to assess my house purchase in 2011. While the company is located a fair distance from my new home in Port Credit (Mississauga), the owner of the company did not hesitate to come to Mississauga to perform the energy audit. The information provided was clear. The recommendations made sense. The quote provided was fair. The work performed was excellent. Just before the company left my home, out of concern, they performed an additional test on the house as I'd added additional venting from our initial meeting. I was advised that an unsafe condition now existed and was strongly advised to replace my outdated gas water tank that vented thru the chimney with a more modern gas water tank so that carbon monoxide did not back draft and build up in my house. Within a few days, the gas tank was replaced.

What I liked about Doug and his team is that they look at the big picture and are honest and fair in their approach to business and making sure you derive value from their services.

Hello Cheryl and thank you so much for the great review. It was a real pleasure dealing with someone like yourself who really wants to know why each step of the attic upgrade process is required and what impact each portion has on the long term performance of your home. There really is much more to an attic upgrade than just blowing some insulation on top of all the existing problem areas. The additional test you mention was a 'combustion spillage test' which should be performed in all houses where gravity vented gas/oil appliances or wood fireplaces etc are present. If there is a negative pressure of 5pa or higher obtained in the home when your exhaust devices are on the combustion gases can spill back into the home which can be very dangerous. The negative pressure in your home was very high at -12pa so I am very happy to hear that you switched out your hot water system. Thank you again, Doug

Srpay Foam Insulation

Home NRG Savers Exceeded our expectations by far. 100% great job! I did most of my corresponding with Phil over the email. He was so helpful, he worked around our schedule and came quickly with a quote and told us what should actually be done. I had asked to have the ceiling in the crawl space sprayed as the floor was feeling damp and it was very cold in the winter, last winter we had really high propane bills and lots heat loss, he explained that there was no insulation at the headers in the space and that all the cold air was getting in there and that was what needed to be insulated to stop our problems. We booked the appointment and had them come in. I was at work that day and came home to find you would never even know they were there, no mess and my crawl space was really Muddy! We have already noticed a huge difference with the propane and even though it's not that cold yet the floors are noticeably warmer and the dampness in our home is gone. Thanks so much to Phil and his team. We appreciate everything you did and all of your tips.

Hello Melissa,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am glad to hear that you were very satisfied with the work we performed. Also nice to hear that this early in the heating season you have already noticed a difference in the comfort level of your home. Which means with the even colder weather approaching you will really notice a difference in comfort but also in your heating costs. If there is anything else we can help you out with in the future let us know.
Thanks Phil

spray foam in crawlspace

We asked to have our floor in the crawlspace spray foamed and Doug suggested having the walls done instead as we had water lines that we wanted to keep in a warm space and our basement is attached to the crawlspace and loses heat thru the openings in the wall which makes it a warm space anyways.

We have now hit the heating season and our kitchen which is above the crawlspace has gone from the coldest area/floor in the house to the warmest area/floor in the house.

We are shocked at the difference such a small area has made to the entire home. Thank you Doug and Phil for pointing us in the right direction.

We would for sure recommend this company for anyone seeking a knowledgeable assessment of your insulation needs.

Energy audit, insulation upgrades

We had Home NRG come in and do an evaluation last year because we thought a new furnace was going to solve all our comfort and cost issues and wanted to get the grants for the replacement. Turns out we had a number of insulation and air leakage issues which we needed to address 1st if we wanted the heating system to work to its full potential.

The energy audit was very educational (not what we expected) and based on the findings we decided to go ahead and perform the insulation upgrades recommended. We were able to do a lot of the draft proofing ourselves with some tips from Doug, but the attic insulation was beyond our skill level. We had them come in and could not believe some of the pictures they showed us of the air leakage going into the attic, all of which they sealed up before blowing in the insulation. It was winter when they did this and the difference on our second floor as immediate. We could no longer feel the air getting colder when we walked up the stairs.

The next step was getting spray foam in the floor of the two rooms over the garage. If we actually closed the door to either of these rooms they would turn into ice boxes. We did the prep work of tearing down the drywall in the garage and removal of the soffit area at the part where the room overhangs our front door, and they came in to do the spray foam. When they showed up (very promptly as usual) we had not removed the drywall from a bulkhead over the heating duct and part of the wall exposed to the garage. They gladly did this for us and found that the ducts were disconnected and had no insulation. They fixed this up for us as well.

The difference was immediate. As soon as we came home and opened the door into the first room a wave of heat hit us. We had never before been able to feel any air coming from the heating system in these rooms and could now feel it blowing tons of nice warm air at waste level.

We have since had our heating and cooling replaced and gone thru an entire winter and summer and the results are amazing. Our entire home is so much more comfortable.

Thank you Doug and Phil for the “educational experience”, making our home so much more comfortable and I might add saving us big time on our heating and cooling bills

Energy audit pre and post renovations to century home

In taking advantage of the government rebate programme for energy retrofit, Home NRG Saver personnel came to carry out an audit of my 12 room home, built in 1836. I received the results of the audit, indicating the energy rating assigned plus a package of literature, suggesting renovations which would likely result in energy savings and a higher rating. A number of these suggestions were acted upon, including insulating the attic space, the outside walls of two rooms, installing water saving flush toilets, a new high efficiency furnace, etc. A return visit for a blower test yielded odd results and a lower rating. When I questioned these results, a second test was set up, carried out today by Doug Clark (the president of the company). He proved to be very helpful in searching out two areas of air leakage, answered questions with respect to what might be done and the best materials to use. Within the next week he will have analyzed the results of this test which I'm hopeful will result in a higher energy savings rating and no charge for the testing. If the results are the same as the previous test, I will happily pay the $75 charge for the retest as an area in the kitchen has been shown to need a barrier to air infiltration.

On the basis of the checkup and testing carried out at my place, and the courteous, knowledgeable and professional manner of the technicians, I would highly recommend this company for any energy audit.

Wow that was quick Bev, your review made it's way online before I even made my way back to the office! I'm very glad we were able to help you out and should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to call or email myself. There will be no charge for the retest as the previous blower door test results are definitely off from what I found today. Your observation that a window might have been open originally was probably accurate and I apologize for that oversight. Turns out that having the test redone was worthwhile. Having the home owner at the house always helps as you can then point out areas of the home that you might have concerns about. I will be in touch shortly to discuss the final results, Doug

Home Energy Audit, Attic Insulation Installation & Attic Draft Reduction

In today's services industries it is rare that I come across a company like Home NRG Savers that clearly separate themselves by being professional, courteous, on time and completes the job in the time specified and cleans up before leaving or stating the job is complete.

My wife and I were very pleased and have recommended Home NRG Savers to a family member and would recommend them to anyone that needs any of these services.

Doug, Phil, Rod and office staff ... awesome job, thank you.

home inspection

When I first began dealing with Home NRG Savers Inc. they were wonderful.
The original inspection was great. It was informative and Von was helpful and appeared to know what he was doing and talking about.

Once the final inspection took place, everything changed.

The individual, Greg, was rushed.

As clients/customers, we need direction since this is not our business.

He did not mention or verify things.

As a result, it was not until he rushed out the door that I realized that the house was not properly 'prepared' for the test.

So, the whole house was not properly measured.

As homeowners receive a rebate based on the percentage in improvement of home energy efficiency, it is obviously important that both inspections are performed correctly.

So, we are unwillingly paying for this sloppiness and carelessness.

Although the receptionists are always friendly, there is now a wall.

I have called 6 (six) times and have received empty promises that someone will call back to explain.

I have been put on hold a few times -- and held, and held, and held.

Trying to get through to the owner, Doug Clark has also been futile.

Yes, I understand that the end of the rebate program was coming up, so I am sure it was a busy time.

But, there is no excuse for bad service.

And, since the government programs are no longer operating, companies such as Home NRG Savers Inc. will need to rely more on great customer service, repeat business and word-of-mouth.

Angry customers don't go away if you ignore them.

Hi Lila,

We are terribly sorry about the issues you had trying to get a hold of the energy advisor. Our office staff should have informed you the energy advisor had been laid off and passed the message on to myself at that point.

Your original call to me came at a time when I was out of the office for a week, and I do apologize. However as soon as I had the opportunity when I returned I contacted you immediately and arranged a convenient time to come your home myself to deal with your issues, and to help clarify the results of your energy evaluation so you understood them. I hope all your issues and concerns have been met and that you are know satisfied with our service. I thank you for your patience and again apologize for any inconvenience.

Regards Doug

Attic insulation installation

In times where customer satisfaction has flown out the window this company has something special. These guys were very professional, taking time to explain the work they were doing and making sure that I (the customer) understood exactly what they were doing.
Not once did I feel intimidated or belittled to ask questions about their approach to their work.
Not going into the attic myself it could have easily been a case of
"he wont see anything so just throw the insulation in and lets go"
I did venture into the attic upon their departure and as promised all the detailed work we discussed was completed.
This company went beyond what I expected and would have no problem recommending them to anyone.
Thanks Doug, Phil and keep up the great work.

Thank you Al! The air leakage was key to making the difference. We came across a few surprises up in your attic which would still be there if insulation had simply been blown in over top of those existing issues.

Now that you know how much nicer it is in your home during the heating season, you'll have to let us know how the cooling season treats you.

Best regards,
Doug

Attic Insulation

I would definately recommend Home NRG Savers as they provided a competative quote and arrived on time as scheduled. There was a problem in one of the attics and instead of just blowing the insulation over it it (we wouldn't have been the wiser), they informed us of the problem so that we could have it repaired and they came back on another day to finish the job at no additional cost. We achieved a 25% better efficiency when they did the final test due to the discovery and repair of the problem in our attic, and the additional insulation they installed. Doug stopped by on their 2nd visit to ensure everything was going well which was very much appreciated. I would definately use them again!
