Energy audit, insulation upgrades
We had Home NRG come in and do an evaluation last year because we thought a new furnace was going to solve all our comfort and cost issues and wanted to get the grants for the replacement. Turns out we had a number of insulation and air leakage issues which we needed to address 1st if we wanted the heating system to work to its full potential.
The energy audit was very educational (not what we expected) and based on the findings we decided to go ahead and perform the insulation upgrades recommended. We were able to do a lot of the draft proofing ourselves with some tips from Doug, but the attic insulation was beyond our skill level. We had them come in and could not believe some of the pictures they showed us of the air leakage going into the attic, all of which they sealed up before blowing in the insulation. It was winter when they did this and the difference on our second floor as immediate. We could no longer feel the air getting colder when we walked up the stairs.
The next step was getting spray foam in the floor of the two rooms over the garage. If we actually closed the door to either of these rooms they would turn into ice boxes. We did the prep work of tearing down the drywall in the garage and removal of the soffit area at the part where the room overhangs our front door, and they came in to do the spray foam. When they showed up (very promptly as usual) we had not removed the drywall from a bulkhead over the heating duct and part of the wall exposed to the garage. They gladly did this for us and found that the ducts were disconnected and had no insulation. They fixed this up for us as well.
The difference was immediate. As soon as we came home and opened the door into the first room a wave of heat hit us. We had never before been able to feel any air coming from the heating system in these rooms and could now feel it blowing tons of nice warm air at waste level.
We have since had our heating and cooling replaced and gone thru an entire winter and summer and the results are amazing. Our entire home is so much more comfortable.
Thank you Doug and Phil for the “educational experience”, making our home so much more comfortable and I might add saving us big time on our heating and cooling bills
