What a mistake picking Jet home improvements. We interviewed 3 contractors. Edison came across as calm and experienced and wanted to deal with a smaller contracting company. His references checked out and we agreed to his payment schedule and signed the contract. Unfortunately, the payments were not tied to performance. He and his son did show up every day and work. However, It soon became apparent that he was not paying his sub contractors who would show up on site refusing to do work until they got paid. In order to get the job done we paid some of the contractors up front and would reconcile with Edison later.
Approx. 2/3 of the way through the job Edison disappeared for approx. 6 weeks, no telephone calls, etc. We were left with dealing with the sub contractors and having the project delayed. We eventually found out he had left the country. After several months and calls and a visit to his residence he did make some attempt to continue working on the job. One of the remaining tasks was the kitchen backsplash, the job was so poorly done that we had to rip it out and hire another contractor. We had to give up expecting he would willingly finish the renovation. To
this day, he did not live up to the contract he signed.
Take aways from this experience are: If you want a smooth and stress free experience check more than3 references, tie payments to performance, get an in writing price for extras and unforeseens, get the names and phone numbers of sub contractors who will be used so you can make sure your contractor always pays them.
