Kitchen Countertop

Island Granite intstalled my kitchen counter top 7 years ago. At the time I was disappointed that the seam required to connect the two pieces for my L-shaped kitchen went through the middle of the sink which was quite noticeable. When I asked about it, I was told to get A white out pen to conceal it. I thought this was odd at the time as usually this seam is done in the corner, but I didn't complain. As time went on one side of the counter top started to drop leaving a noticeable ridge. I still didn't complain. BUT when the undermount sink dropped right out, I did phone and ask for them to come out and fix it. They said it would be a $200.00 charge and I was told this was not uncommon and could happen as early as 3-5 years after installation depending on the use! We are a retired couple and have a dishwasher so the sink does not get exceptional overuse. I had another company come and look and was told this should never have happened if installed properly and he has never seen this before! Also there is not as much overhang on the cabinets that there should be so spills tend to drip down the front of the cabinets. All I can say is buyer beware. I do not recommend this company as they do not stand behind their workmanship.

Let's address everything here, shall we?

We warranty all of our products for 1 year.

Sinks can hold indefinitely unless abused or subject to heavy wear, like yours was. People deny abusing their sinks all the time. We don't judge. We fix them. If its outside of the year warranty, then we know it wasn't from an installation defect, and we need to charge to cover our costs. We are not a charity organization. We are a business.

L-shaped kitchens require a seam if they do not fit in a slab as was the case with your kitchen. Seams are commonly done on either the corner, or the center of the sink, depending on said layout.

7 years ago, when quartz was a new product, using a whiteout pen was industry standard. It is no longer the case.

You called me yesterday for a sink reattachment. You live 40 minutes away, and we need to cover out costs. 1 hour and 20 minutes of driving, 2 people, plus an hour for cleaning, and reattaching the sink. $200 is that amount.

Overhang is industry standard. Any more and it looks ugly.

We back our workmanship. We also do not tolerate bullies. You stated you would write a scathing review of our business if we did not comply to your demands and do it for free. Threats are ignored. Good day.

Kitchen counter tops and backsplash, poor workmanship

Island Granite has great selection and prices. Be sure to get a layout of dimensions prior to fabrication for your verification and educate yourself on proper installation standards to make sure they follow them. Check all details as the job progresses as they are willing to correct oversights, but only if you find them early enough and are aware of what to look for. Provide your own color matched high grade paintable latex caulk for wall seams as they use regular white like most installers. Stone cuts will not be laser perfect, but mostly satisfactory. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

As you have edited you review, I shall in-turn edit my response.

As every business knows, there's always that one customer that is just never satisfied with the work you do. Lionel happens to be this years edition of "I'll raise a storm to get a discount because I like trying to destroy small family-owned businesses, because I'm an American and I know better".

We ignored the red flags he raised that help us identify the "Karens" of the customer world from the normal customers.

He complained about his cabinet maker and about how the installer didn't know what he was doing. Lionel told us the cabinet installer packed up his tools and left. We called up his cabinet maker to get the full story. (This was AFTER we had dealt with Lionel) The owner reported that his installer had has never, in his 20 years of experience, had someone breathing down his neck more than Lionel.

The issue is not the quality of the product, as industry standard is always met; It is the merit of the man behind the review, who has tossed their self-respect into the wind with the expectation that by doing so they can save a few dollars.

Amazing people and amazing work

I have so many great things to say about this company and the owners/operators.
I had such a pleasant experience from start to finish.
The fellows that came to take measurements and who installed my countertop were very extremely nice and also did such a fantastic job.
I have a few other projects to do in my home and will be using their services again.
I get so many compliments on my kitchen countertops. Literally everyone who has came into my home has commented on them. I have been and will continue to recommend Island Granite to everyone who asks.
All around great service and amazing product. I absolutely love my countertops!

Beware family businesses that are more about their family than about business to the customer.

Went to store and spoke with salesperson, and on phone with another salesperson. Sent dimensions (Long L shaped) and got an estimate and was told owner would have to come and measure. Seemed very personable. Informed by sales staff they could come and instal early on a date when I had a commitment to take my Mum to Dr. They said all they needed was door left open. Against my and my mother's best judgement we went to the Doctor s it was important. My husband was at home. Installed but clearly cut too short along back of long side and so they moved it forward leaving a 3/8" gap., and pulled shorter side up to it leaving another 3/8" gap at stove so counter top was visible beside stove. My husband paid without inspecting work and they left. When I got home and saw the gaps I called the store and spoke to saleswoman who said "I really should have been at home" and to send photos Which I did. Salesman called and said I had moved stove to make the photo look worse and if they had made it so it would butt up to the stove they would have had to cut another piece of stone. When the owner cam to reassess he quickly indicated that he had mis measured and would fix it. All good, but I mentioned that I really had a problem with his customer service and proceeded to tell him the story about the staff. He cut me off abruptly saying they were his wife and son. I indicated that they were probably very nice people but this was business and that I thought he might be interested in feedback about his business. He got quite angry and said that when they came back to reinstall we weren't allowed to be in the home. In the end it was fixed, but, I really couldn't recommend them because of the terrible experience.

When this lady walked in our door, she told me this story of how her contractor ripped her off, over charged her, and now she had to save up for her counter tops, so she was looking for a deal. I should have realized this was a red flag. When we called to schedule her install, we had a really tight schedule, and she would have had to wait another 2 weeks till we had another opening, if she didn't take the date we had already penciled in for her. She was rude with our staff on the phone, then she agreed to let us in on the date we had set aside for her. Her husband let us in, we did the install, he did look at it! and he was happy, and paid us in full. She came home from her mothers appointment, and the proceeded to loss it. She had a gap (normal by all standards). She called and ripped a strip off me, then settled down when I asked for some photo's. She sent us photo's and was again rude and demanding to me. yes I'm the wife. I told her not to worry, we would take care of it. When any company leaves space for the stove to slide in and out, there is a set standard. She wanted it tighter. So for the photo's she posted, she pushed her stove as far over to one side to emphasize the gap even farther. My husand was there promptly to see what was wrong. He decided it was easier to fabricate a new piece then deal with her, and her abuse of the staff. He also corrected her about this, which she did not like. He did ask her to not be there, because he knew she was the kind of client that would be breathing over his shoulder if she was there. We have had many picky clients, and that is what they do. Picky is easier to deal with, the someone who already has a chip on the shoulder. We were back as quickly as possible, with a new piece, and she was happy. Then she write this ridiculous review. This was the most miserable client we have ever dealt with, and she takes misery out on everyone around her. I actually feel sorry for her, that she doesn't have anything better to do with her time, the post malicious reviews when in the end it all worked out.

Granite Countertops

I chose Island Granite to do our granite countertops and am so happy with the result. They were so friendly and helpful throughout our whole experience. They were able to help us choose the perfect stone to match our cabinets and flooring. The communication with them was so easy and they were very flexible with timing when it came to installation. I would recommend them to anyone on Vancouver Island who is looking for granite, quartz or marble custom work.

My kitchen is proof!
