We thought (thought being the operative word here) that our first home inspection with Pillar To Post was exceptional and hired them again for my mother in law's house. The man who did our house had since retired, so they sent a new guy. On her house a number of very obvious things (after the fact to us, of course) were missed. The furnace was improperly vented, the water supply pipe from outside was crumbling, etc.
Now that we are trying to sell our home, we've learned that the first guy wasn't so good after all. He estimated that approx. 20% of our wiring was knob & tube which we disclosed to our insurance company. Turns out that not only is our house close to 100% knob & tube, but that it's only 60amp service as well.
Plumbing and wiring are basic criteria for hiring a home inspector in the first place, and ours have both failed miserably.
On the positive side, they give you a nice binder that tells you where all your electrical sockets are, and if you have ceramic tile in your bathroom.
