bedroom closet

We used this company although they were slightly more expensive (just slightly), and I am glad we did. They were very professional and did a great job. We still get lots of compliments on their work, and I have recommended them to a few of my friends.

Goodbye to inefficient sliding door closets

We live in a mid-70's built home and suffered long and hard with sliding door closets where most of the space was dedicated to nothing but air. Started my research on HomeStars and hit all the well reviewed providers. California Closets were the most responsive. Our sales person was Emily and she was excellent. Took the time to understand our needs, came back with thoughtful suggestions, and was never pushy. Installation was well coordinated and our installer Ian was a gem. I usually like to observe workmen - to make sure are conscientious and have good habits. I tend to linger around if I feel they are not up to snuff to make sure they do a good job. With Ian, just seeing how he set up, kept the area clean, and communicated - I was comfortable leaving him to work after 15 mins of interaction. The man is just awesome.

In total we installed 5 built-in closets and 3 floating style closets.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Prices are a little higher than market. I would watch that in a bad economy.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
- Visit the showroom so you are clear on the quality of materials. - Get a few more quotes than I did so you have better bargaining power.

Custom Mudroom Unit

I worked with Emily, the designer, who was amazing. The installer showed up exactly on time the day of the install to put in our new mudroom unit. Up until then we had given C.C. a 10 star rating.

The intall was almost finished when the installer told me he had made a mistake. I told him to leave it as is and we would see if it was liveable. Once he was gone I noticed a few more mistakes including a mistake in the width of one of the unit pieces (which is probably why the installer made that particular mistake in the first place!)

I communicated this with Emily immediately. She contacted me back and told me C.C. offered to give us a 10% discount on the unit (before taxes) or a 10% discount on a future unit or to re-install the unit (which is the preferred approach).

We made a decision that the unit was liveable and not worth our time or energy for them to come in and re-do it (due to it being in an area with a cable box where many things could go wrong, the elevator fee the condo charges to book the elevator, and having two children under the age of 3 at home). I communicated that I felt a 20% compensation would be more appropriate since we DID NOT WANT a reinstallation and there was more than one mistake made with the unit.

The next day I received a phone call from the Sales Manager whom I had never spoken to or met. I reiterated that I thought a 20% discount would be the best solution for us considering the stress, time, inconvenience and various issues with reinstalling the unit. She told me that what I was asking for was "unreasonable". She interrupted me on many occasions and continually questioned why we wouldn't want a re-installation. The 20-minute conversation was extremely unpleasant. I found her approach to be aggressive and more company-oriented than customer-oriented. When I asked if there was someone I could speak to other than her, I was told that the owner of the company, Adam Shearer, would be that person but was unavailable to discuss matters further. We got off the phone with the mutual understanding that we would be getting a 10% discount on the unit and I was walking away an unhappy customer.

I ended up emailing Adam Shearer. He contacted me back almost immediately and after we spoke over the phone he did end up offering us the 20% discount. He apologized for the Sales Manager's miscommunication regarding his willingness to correspond with a customer. He explained that he is always willing to communicate with a customer. He also assured me that the installation problem is a rare occurrance and that the preferred way to correct the issue is a reinstallation but he would respect our decision to forego that option.

At the end of the day, I am giving C.C. an 8 star rating because:

1. I loved working with Emily who designed the unit and I would most certainly work with her again.

2. The installation happened on the Thursday and the issue was finally resolved on the following Friday - which I consider to be a relatively short time line in this case.

3. The quality of the unit and it's system is wonderful.

4. California Closets is a well-run company that is willing to do what they can, within reason, to make sure their customer walks away happy.

At the end of all of this, I would consider working with C.C. again.

Custom Master Bedroom Closet & Custom Walk-In Kitchen Pantry

We had used California Closets in 2006 to transform our master bedroom closet in our condo, upon the recommendation of a good friend who had used them. We were so happy with the work they did for us then that when we bought our new home, we called them again. We had them do both a custom master bedroom closet and a custom walk-in kitchen pantry for us.

Our salesperson and designer visited us and we showed her the spaces, talked how we'd like to use them and she threw out some great ideas we hadn't thought of. Afterwards she went back and did some fantastic computer designs of what she was proposing. We tweaked a few things together and agreed on pricing. The installer Dean then showed up to take all measurements. Afterwards, everything was pre-made and pre-cut exactly for our space so that the install would go quickly and not create much mess.

Since we had just moved in, we were warned ahead of time the raised panel drawers we wanted would take a few weeks. To accomodate us and so we didn't have to live out of boxes for weeks, they did the install of everything about a week later, except for putting in the actual drawers. Dean returned a few weeks later to put the drawers in. That was great of them to accomodate us like that.

The master bedroom closet is about 6 feet wide and a little over 12 feet long. They turned it into a fantastic multi-functional space, with 3 different height hanging spaces, 8 fancy and very sturdy drawers and lots of shelving (including slide out tie and belt racks). We added a sitting cube, hung a mirror and now call it our dressing room. The closet is so perfect that we were able to move our dressers to our second bedroom instead of having to purchase new and we have no dressers in our bedroom with plenty of space for all our clothing (and even a little room to add).

We are just as happy with the pantry. Previously it was an ugly 6x6 cube with two long, sagging shelves. We now have lots of fantastic adjustable shelving and a sliding storage basket. They even hid an ugly HVAC vent that ran along the floor.

This work was done in October 2009 and 2.5 years later, everything still looks new like the day it was installed. They used high quality, durable materials and the installation was great. We are very happy with all aspects of this work and would recommend California Closets to anyone.

We had gotten numerous quotes just for comparison, even through we were already biased towards California Closets based on past personal experience. Even after negotiating the price down a bit, they still were not our cheapest quote, but were reasonable and we decided to go with them afterall because we knew what we'd be getting. Have not regretted that for a moment and will use them again.

Closet - Full wall unit

Our experience with California Closets was really great. From the initial consult to the final product - we received incredibly thoughtful and professional service. Alexis met with us in the beginning to understand what we needed to be organized. She helped us decide on options, like the built-in laundry hamper and the amount of shelf space versus hanging space so that all of our needs were met. She was very professional and always pleasant and accommodating.

We have an old house that has many slants, crooked walls and awkward corners. California Closets created a truly custom made wall unit that made a very imperfect room appear flawless. The unit is floor to ceiling and wall to wall and it is seamless. They had to cut individual and unique pieces to fit our wall to ensure that the unit was a perfect fit for our room. The installers were professional and seemed very concerned with making us happy.

It was a wonderful experience. We absolutely love our closet.
