Basement & ground floor

Had $5K worth of solid hardwood delivered. Arrived in two different batches (2009 & 2011) with different tongue and grooves that did not fit together. Tried to return the 2009 boxes. They would NOT take them and the woman did not want to listen and made a "shoo" gesture at me. I calmly said I was unhappy and would like to speak to the manager. The woman said she didn't care and said to the next customer in line that she would help him next as soon as I "hurried up". Was forced to buy extra boxes of 2011 batch at a higher price! They wouldn't even honour the original sale price at which I bought the rest. I said that this was extremely unfair. The woman scoffed at me and threw the order paper down and said "do you want it or not?". Their mistake cost me $600 extra dollars and I was treated like crap.

Company Response

Our customer service manager been in continued contact with Jessica, trying to address her concerns. She provided some of the back-up paperwork to him, but it is apparently incomplete. Regrettably, he is currently away from the office due to the sudden passing of his mother. Despite the fact that we are all working diligently towards a resolution (which should be arrived at as soon as our customer service manager returns to the office), Jessica has unfortunately elected to post this negative review. It would have been nice if Jessica would have reciprocated our good faith by holding off posting until the matter was completed. We will update this response as soon as we can.

Got lower grade Maple Mill Run instead of Maple Traditional

On March 27th 2012, I went to Brampton Hardwood Floors. On seeing the selection I decided on Imperial Collection Hard Maple Natural Traditional type. An installer / sales guy named John was helping me. I also spoke to an associate Vanadana over there about this hardwood. I pointed to Imperial Collection Hard Maple Natural Traditional and let them know that I was interested in that. After that I went to the cashier, who was Vanadana only, to check on the size of a vent cover. Soon John also came there & told me that I should place an order for my selection, Hard Maple Natural Traditional, since it was on a good deal. As I was sure about that particular wood I placed an order for 24 boxes for the same. I paid for it & a few days later John was supposed to pick it up & bring it to my place for installation. John did not come himself but sent 2 guys working under him for the installation. Each box was labelled as Maple Natural MILL RUN. The word Traditional was not there at all. I learnt that Mill Run is the lowest grade. It is either poor quality or is very short length. I called John about this but he told me to call Brampton Hardwood Floors. I spoke to Vanadana & tried to explain to her that probably there was a mistake, they had sent Mill Run instead of the Traditional variety of Maple Hard wood, but she became extremely rude, she was not willing to listen to me. My husband also tried to speak with her but she hung up in his mid sentence. I was left with no choice but to go to the store. I took the bill there & told Vanadana that I had not ordered Mill Run but she simply told me that Traditional & Mill Run were one and the same. I told her then why did the sample not specify Imperial Collection Hard Maple Natural Traditional / Mill Run. She insisted that it was one & the same thing. I then approached the Manager Vince Scott. He seemed to understand my issue, I told him I felt wronged & he came out with me to see what I had ordered & then went to speak with Vandana, but something transpired between them (frankly I thought that Vanadana was shouting at him) & then he changed his tone with me. What I had not noticed was that Vanadana when taking my order had written Mill Run instead of Traditional in the order. I, in all faith assumed that she was entering what I had ordered. Hence now Vince told me that the paper said Mill Run & so that’s what I have got. I was taken aback. I requested Vince if he could change the product for me but he said to change it, would cost me another $400 since both Traditional & Mill Run were the same cost, if I wanted to upgrade to a more expensive product then they would waive off the $400. Why would he agree to change it if both the products were the same?
The next day I went to return the product back & noticed that the product which till now only said Imperial Collection Hard Maple Natural Traditional now said Imperial Collection Hard Maple Natural Traditional / Mill Run. They obviously do not want anyone to catch them.

Besides being wronged & going through a lot of stress I also lost money. I had paid $2011.29 & got back only $1508 as they had a restocking charge of 25%. I do hope I am able to get justice somehow & at the same time I would like to warn all prospective buyers going to Brampton Hardwood Floors to read very carefully as to what is being written in the order or they might end up like me.

Company Response

Anita, the photograph you posted is not of the product that you purchased. We are very surprised and disappointed by your negative review. Both we and the independent third-party installer were extremely patient and accommodating in all our dealings with you, even in light of your adversarial, unreasonable behavior and constant flip-flopping as to how you wanted us to try and help remedy any concerns.
The wood you purchased was of excellent quality for the price, and in our showroom was always referred to and openly labeled as Traditional/Mill Run. We do not understand why you are now insisting that there was some type of attempt on our part to hide the Mill Run description. By your own admission, the invoice that you signed before picking up the wood clearly stated Mill Run. You did not raise any concern until actually opening the boxes at your home, and then changing your mind and deciding that you wanted a higher priced alternative. You then asked the third-party independent floor installer to stop all work and load the wood into his truck to follow you back to our store. The installer then waited for you for around two hours while we explored different wood grades and finishes that you were considering in place of the original product. You then advised that you were actually satisfied with the original product and had the installer bring the wood back to your home for installation (which would take place the next working day as so much time had been wasted). That night, you changed your mind again and called the installer to advise that you would not be using the product and to have him again deliver it back to our store. Your actions caused the installer to lose two days that he could have used to complete another job. Notwithstanding, throughout all of this waffling on your part, both we and the installer always treated you with the utmost patience and respect (even though the treatment by you was not returned in kind.) The restocking charge is our policy on cancelled orders, and is clearly posted throughout our store and on our invoice. It is unfortunately required to cover our administrative and employee expenses for receiving, repacking and restocking the products. We repeat that we always strive to keep our customers happy and would be pleased to apply the restocking charge to other product if you wish to purchase same from us.

laminate flooring

The laminate I bought was good price for the quality. The staff at pick up was quite helpful.
All the sales people I saw from my 4 trips were all women working there, not as friendly and helpful as I expected ("take it or leave it " kind of attribute). They told me the brand Continental flooring I was looking at was German product, when I got it, the box was poorly packed, couldn"t find where it is made.

Company Response

We're glad you are happy with the quality and price you received from us, Juan. We asked our salespeople about your "German product" comment and they believe you misunderstood. Some of the very sophisticated machinery involved in the production of our flooring products is engineered and imported from Germany, but not the wood products themselves. We would also greatly appreciate it if you would contact us to provide further details about your feedback as to the box packing.

Brampton Hardwood is both a male and female working environment. The women working at Brampton Hardwood feel targeted and that your comment is very sexist and they are offended by your words.

Hardwood Flooring

I was very impressed with this store. I found the sales staff to be extremely friendly, honest and informative.

They have the best combo of selection and prices that I found after much shopping around, and only seem to sell higher quality products. I compared them to competitors who tried to sell me what they claimed were products of equal quality for cheaper prices, but on further investigation it was clear that there was no comparison. The other stores' slightly cheaper prices bought you boxes full of short planks with uneven stain colouration and milling. The finish and milling of the Brampton Hardwood planks were much more uniform, and the majority of the planks in each box were the full 8 foot length. These features make a huge difference once the floor is installed, especially in a larger area like the one in my home.

Also, they seem to have an endless amount of inventory. Almost every sample in the store is in stock on the premises. They are one of the few places where you can actually select, purchase and pick-up your material in one visit. A true one-stop shop for hardwood flooring.

They took great care of me and I always recommend them to all of my friends and family.

Hardwood Floor

We searched the city to find the best hardwood for the best price, and Brampton Hardwood was by far the best! They were the friendliest and most knowledgeable company we came across. We ended up buying high quality Canadian hardwood for less than the cheap Chinese milled wood others are selling.

Melissa, great job on seeing the truth that many other hardwood retailers won't tell you. The slightly cheaper Chinese products cannot hope to compare in quality to the North American products we sell.

CUMARU Hardwood

I purchased this about 2300 sq ft at $5.19 square foot of the Cumaru Hardwood from the Floor Depot one of Brampton Hardwood store in the Niagara area and I was told it was Canadian hardwood however nowhere on the box I can find made in Canada nor anyone in the store can confirm that it was made in Canada also the St. Lawrence company does not exist anywhere in Canada.
I found that out when my installer noticed the product was defective and he stopped installing after the third box was opened.
I called the store and they sent a "supervisor" to inspect the product and he agreed that the wood was defective and he passed me on to Joe “director of operation” and from that moment I can only speak to Joe.
I told Joe that it taking the installer too long to sift through the wood and that it's going to cast me more to install and if that's the case I want a full refund and he said that he will cover the extra time that it will take to sort the wood.
Well, after about a month of back and forth I did not get a penny for the $700 it cost extra to install the floor, also I have 5 boxes of defective wood that he refused to replace and basically ignores my calls and will not allow any one in his business talk to me.
So all I can say about Brampton Hardwood is they are dishonest and do not stand behind the product their which they claim it's the best in Canada so imagine if I have to call them for warranty issue. As far as I'm concerned there is no warranty on anything Brampton Hardwood sell.
I Was naive not to get all of his promises in writing and now I have nothing to support my story, and when I put in a complaint to the BBB against him, he claims that he did not promise me anything and denied everything, so the BBB had no choice but to close the case .

My advice is, stay away from Brampton Hardwood, you will save allot of money in the long run.

Company Response

It is quite unfortunate that this customer still chooses to denigrate our company after our many, extraordinary efforts to resolve his issues to the best of our abilities.

The St. Lawrence brand of hardwood is manufactured in Bramalea, Ontario and is well known throughout the industry as a respected Canadian producer of top quality hardwood flooring products.

The St. Lawrence hardwood flooring that we provided to this customer was not defective in any way, as he claims. The very slight variations in size and gap were well below the industry standard of tolerance. Wood is a natural and organic product, and is therefore always subject to considerable variations in grain, color, texture, marking and edging. The exotic woods as purchased by this customer have even more inherent variation. We explained to the customer on many occasions that due to the foregoing, he could not expect all of the boards to look uniform when installed. He wanted the uniform look anyway and therefore separated, and didn't use, perfectly good boards that did not match his unrealistic idea of how the finished floor should look.

Furthermore, the customer installed the hardwood himself, with the help of his brother-in-law. Neither of them is a qualified hardwood floor installer. In fact, there were many occasions where we were gracious enough to provide guidance and advice to them on proper installation techniques.

We were always perfectly willing to explore possible accommodations for extra costs of installation. However, when we repeatedly requested copies of an invoice or other proof of the alleged $700 extra costs incurred by this customer, we were always refused (obviously due to the fact that the customer performed the work himself.)

The installation took many months to complete, as the customer was not an experienced installer. A professional installer would probably have taken less than a week to finish such a job. Throughout the long installation process, the customer would pick through the many boxes of material and separate entire boxes that he wanted replaced. Out of good faith, we replaced this material box-for-box whenever asked, on an ongoing basis, from another different batch of the same product. This repeated service resulted in substantial administrative and restocking costs to us.

A qualified and experienced contractor would be aware that there is about a 5% waste factor in any box of hardwood due to the previously mentioned natural variation (i.e. wood knots, etc.) and standard manufacturer imperfections (i.e. edge cut differences, etc.) Such a professional would follow the standard practice of cutting out the small unusable portions of the boards and utilizing the rest accordingly (i.e. as filler or end pieces, etc.). Entire boards would not be discarded due to imperfections to a slight portion thereof, which is what this customer was doing. Because the customer did not maximize his utilization of the material, his measurement calculations ended up being too low and he needed to buy more product to make up for the excessive waste that could have easily been avoided.

Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance to our company, and we therefore sent two professionals to deal with this customer's concerns. One was a qualified inspector who examined the product and confirmed everything stated here. The other was a professional hardwood installer from our independent contractor referral list. This contractor began to install the floor for the customer but could not continue due to the customer's incessant nit-picking and unreasonably high expectations. As would be expected, the professional installer did not appreciate being told how to do his job by someone with no actual expertise in the business and therefore was unable to continue working. This was surely the result this customer wanted, as he always intended to install the floor himself to save costs.

It should also be noted that this customer always had the option of returning the hardwood prior to installation if he was not happy with its quality. Instead, he refused to do so and went ahead and installed it. This clearly shows that the customer was in fact satisfied with the product, but is now trying to wrongfully recoup some of his own personal costs from us.

As is our usual practice, we made great efforts to accommodate this customer. Based on all the facts of this matter we were unable to provide any of the unreasonable resolutions he requested. The customer has already tried to push his complaint through the Better Business Bureau, and they immediately closed this case once the truth was revealed.

Brampton Hardwood has been a trusted retailer for over 25 years, and we always go to great lengths to treat all of our many customers with respect, honesty and integrity.
