Pool maintenance

I became involved with Bonavista through renovation and maintenance work on my pool and later engaged them to be my pool service company.

The quality of their renovation work took several years to become apparent as having been very shoddy but the pool maintenance was horrible from start to finish. Given the very short season for Toronto pools inertia sets in and you keep wanting to give them another chance but every year they found a new way to disappoint. I strongly echo all of the negative reviews associated with this company

Don't use them for pool/hot tub maintenance

As a former customer of Bona Vista for over 5 years, I easily spent 2X more on their services than I did for the hot tub itself. In the spirit of providing a balanced review, I'll point out the obvious: owning a hot tub or pool can be a massive money pit. It's not always the fault of the maintenance and service provider when things get wonky. That said, you do NOT want to rely on these guys as your trusted partner in this area. Over the years, I had a progressively worse experience with their timeliness, manners, quality of service and general sentiment that I mattered to them as a valued client. And when I finally (and politely) told them I was changing providers, that's when things really got interesting.

This is the first review I've ever written online, which should in and of itself be all you need to give pause to your decision to use Bona Vista. There are way better, more caring, more cost effective options available in this market. Bona Vista has set an incredibly low bar for themselves, and amazingly they still find ways to disappoint.

Bonavista Pools

Bonavista Pools was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Jennifer took the time to work with our family to find the right Hydropool swim spa for our lifestyle. The crane delivery and installation team were fantastic, especially considering how tight the space was in our tiny Toronto backyard.

We are happy we picked a swim spa over a small pool. The set-up and installation process was easier. The overall pricing and ongoing maintenance fees (i.e. electrical, heating, etc.) more cost effective. Most importantly, our family can swim all four seasons (i.e. 12 months), not just spring/summer (approx. 4 months). Furthermore, the adjustable jets make the swim spa more versatile than a small pool. Both the kids and us can swim what feels forever against the jets and never reach the end of the swim spa. It makes for fantastic exercise. Bonus the massage seats! The kids can play at one end of the swim spa against the jets while their parents sit back at the other end and enjoy a water jet massage.

Thank you Bonavista Pools for helping our family create a tiny backyard oasis in the city.

pool renovation

We contracted Bonavista to renovate our concrete pool in early 2016. See the after pictures. We ended up in court with both Bonavista and their collection agency Rosedale Financial. We brought evidence and expert independent witnesses and in late 2019 we won. As part of the ruling, both Bonavista and Rosedale were required to pay our legal fees. Bonavista paid, but the collection agency Rosedale Financial closed up their business and disappeared.

Charged us for a new motor.... except it wasn't new!

The pool company who built and maintained our pool unfortunately had to close suddenly and they suggested we use Bonavista. What a horrible mistake!!!

We had an issue with the motor, someone came to fix it! Great! They said they replaced the motor... except when we looked at it, it wasn't new? We asked them about it and even took a photo to show them. They said it was a new motor and automatically pre-charged our cc.

They also charged us for several hours of labour when our security cameras clearly showed how long they were at our house. They said they charged for travel. Where are they travelling from??

I don't know if one of their employees is up to no good or if the entire company operates that way. We tried communicating with them, but it is no use.

Stay away!! Now we need to find an honest, trustworthy pool company for next year!

Company Response

Hello Derek, as a family member of our second generation business your feedback is important to us. I spoke to our Service Department and understand you had a new motor installed in July however the label on it was scratched. Our senior tech installed it for you months ago and when we closed your pool this fall it seemed to be working as expected. This tech has been with us for over 20 years. Adding travel time to each job is a standard industry practise. We appreciate the opportunity to serve clients who value the decades of experience we have as we've been building and taking care of pools in the GTA for over 50 years. Please email me: jennifer@bonavistapools.com if you would like to further discuss your concerns.

Pool service and maintenance

We hired Bonavista Pools a few years back to take over the service and maintenance of our cement inground pool and hot tub. As time went on, the service got worse and worse.

The pool was leaking constantly, we had heater problems on weekends, the pool light was out, and despite requesting professional repair, nothing seemed to be able to get fixed.

The people who came to service the pool weekly were students who really didn't know much about pools at all beyond putting in chemicals. One time, a pool worker was playing basketball in the yard and another time, they left the gate open and it blew off in the wind.

As for the pool itself, the water became very murky and dark, and that's when we finally called in another pool company to assess what was going on.

A week later, we learned that despite paying for service weekly, the chemicals being put into the pool were not right as the salt system was not even working and required a new part. The heater was broken and leaking badly and required replacement, the pool light could indeed be easily fixed by a plumber, and finally, there was a large leak around the skimmer, which has now been rectified by adding glue.

If you're looking for professional service for your pool, do not call Bonavista. They took a lot of money and did the least amount of work possible.

Hot Tub

Rob Irvine found me the perfect hot tub and coordinated seamlessly with his installation crew (Tyler and Matthew) and the crane needed to get it over my house! Rob has such a "no problem" attitude, communicated beautifully about all details and Tyler and Matthew were fast, efficient and so friendly! The experience I was dreading was a walk in the park thanks to Rob Irvine and all the wonderful staff at Bona Vista!

Pool Opening, New Heater

A family member recommended we switch to BonaVista this year for our pool maintenance. We also needed a new Heater. BonaVista coordinated our pool opening, and new Heater and started our weekly maintenance program. We are really happy with the service from BonaVista. I would highly recommend them.

Pool painting, maintenance

Cannot say enough about Donna and her Bonavista crews. They painted my pool and it looks fantastic. A small but noticeable spot was missed but they are fixing that. I am impressed with how they are handling the error. Mistakes are inevitable anywhere, Bonavista said no problem we will fix it, and that is how to judge a company: how they deal with a problem. They owned it. Their maintenance crew is terrific and efficient. Pools mechanicals can be problematic, I will call Bonavista before anyone else for my heater, pump or filter issues. Everyone is pleasant to deal with and they have been very professional. Their pricing is very reasonable. We opted for a solution -Ecofinish - which has a longer life than traditional paint. More expensive yes, and the longevity remains to be seen, but I am confident that Bonavista backs their work.

$8,000.00
