We do not recommend working with Ashton Renovation. Having lived in our 100-year-old home for nearly 15 years, we were particularly keen on hiring a contractor who could provide quality service, a positive customer experience, and a solid output for a kitchen renovation. Our experience did not meet our expectations: The project began on February 5, 2024, and was completed on August 22, 2024 (nearly 7 months). It involved renovating a 12-by-14-foot kitchen, including removing one wall (non-load bearing). We began this project with an existing design (completed by a separate company), and most features were already selected (e.g., kitchen layout, cabinetry design, countertop, appliances). There needed to be better coordination between Ashton Renovation and the cabinetry company we were asked to work with. It became apparent near the end of the project that Ashton Renovation, the cabinetry company, and we, as homeowners, were all working with different information. This led to several important details being overlooked, unnecessary frustration, and last-minute decisions that affected the desired outcome. Mark (Lead contractor) failed to provide project oversight and management. We found his communication condescending and lacking understanding for homeowners to be without a kitchen for several months, with lengthy periods of inactivity between project tasks. He did not take accountability for project requests that were either unmet or had gone in a different direction than we had hoped for. Our concerns were often addressed by comments about his several years of experience. Despite these assertions, we did not see this experience reflected in how he communicated with us, the lack of project management and the lack of foresight in handling unexpected issues that would arise during a renovation of an older home. We repeatedly told Mark that we had lost confidence in the process. We felt he should have shown more interest in correcting his processes or being flexible in accommodating our concerns. When we chose to withhold the remaining ~4% of the project budget (about $5,000) until the final activities were completed, he threatened to sue us despite having paid all invoices within 24-48 hours upon request. After completing many major renovations in our home, our experience as homeowners tells us it doesn't have to be this way. We recommend finding a contractor who will value your patronage and work with you closely to get the most value for your money and time.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for sharing your feedback and providing us with an opportunity to reflect on your project. We appreciate your comments and regret that your experience with Ashton Renovations did not fully meet your expectations.

We understand that the extended timeline was frustrating for you. As you are aware, there were several unexpected structural and mechanical issues that surfaced during the renovation, including repairs to the subfloor, asbestos remediation, ceiling joists, framing, and HVAC modifications. These additional tasks, along with additional work that you requested with painting and electrical lighting in other parts of your home, combined with supply delays from the cabinetry provider, contributed to the longer-than-expected project duration.

At Ashton Renovations, we use Buildertrend to ensure transparent communication and project management. We maintain detailed logs, inspections, and work orders throughout every stage of the process to keep our clients informed and up-to-date. Despite these efforts, we understand that the delays affected your experience, and we sincerely apologize if our communication did not meet your expectations.

Regarding the financial aspect, we appreciate your willingness to work with us when concerns arose. Though the contract did not permit the withholding of funds in the manner suggested, we showed flexibility by agreeing to meet halfway and providing a goodwill gesture in the form of a $500 discount to demonstrate our commitment to client satisfaction.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our work and would be happy to provide photos of the completed kitchen renovation for context, as we believe the end result reflects our team's dedication and craftsmanship. It is unfortunate that the quality of the final product was not mentioned in the review, as we believe it represents the high standard we strive to deliver on all projects.

Renovations, especially in older homes, often present unforeseen challenges. We understand that this can be a stressful process for homeowners, and we always aim to work closely with our clients to navigate these situations in a positive and professional manner. We appreciate your feedback and will use this experience to improve our services moving forward.

Thank you again for your comments, and we wish you all the best.

Sincerely,
Mark Ashton
CEO, Ashton Renovations

I spent months researching underpinners and contacting references and finally decided to hire Saverio at Cornerstone Waterproofing and I did not regret it. I tend to get very involved with the projects and I am very particular in how I oversee a project. Saverio was very responsive on text, phone and email and always answered my questions and put my fears to rest. Whenever I had a concern, he was open to hear me out and make and always responded accordingly by making the necessary changes. His team works very hard and I never felt uncomfortable to have them in and out of my home. They kept as clean as possible and made sure to seal everything up tight at the end of each day. They kept consistent and good hours and did great work. I know this review sounds very flowery but that just shows how happy I was with Cornerstone considering the amount of money I was spending and the size of the job for these small homes. As far as price goes, his quote was pretty consistent to other quotes but I can tell you from experience that his customer service is enough hidden added value that you will also not regret hiring him.

Hi Daniel, thank you for taking the time to leave us such a positive review! We know that having work done on your home can be very stressful in and of itself so we always try to deal with any concerns or issues our clients may have as soon as they arise. I'm glad you're happy with everything. It was our pleasure working for you. Regards, Saverio LoMonaco

My large mature tree split in half after an ice storm and I called Dion immediately as he had trimmed my tree in the past. He responded very quickly and the branch was safely removed within a day. Although the branch sprawled across a large portion of my property including fences, detached garages, and smaller trees... all we're safe and untouched once the work was complete. The rest of the tree needed to be cut down and Dion was able to get approval from the City to do so the same day and the rest of the tree was leveled the next day. Thank you.

I first hired Dortech to install a new garage door opener and they did a great a job in a timely manner for a price I was happy with. Later down the line, when my garage door broke I called Dortech and they arrived the same day to look at the problem. Once we both agreed that the best course of action was to replace, I felt comfortable hiring them to replace and install my garage door. The work they did was spot on and I feel that they we're committed to a job well done rather than trying to bleed me for money. I know that they are new to Homestars, but let my review be an indicator of their quality work rather than their (currently) low number of reviews. I would call them again or recommend them to others.

I felt comfortable hiring WOW after speaking with their representative who came for a free quote. He was very honest with me and I felt I could trust and work with him. They arrived on time, finished the job earlier than quoted, was flexible with the start date, and left the house tidy. I also felt like my family and I were treated with respect by the team supervisor that came into my home. Lastly, they we're able to successfully fix many problem areas on my walls and ceiling before painting.

After attempting to contact many unresponsive companies, I turned to homestars and found Enrique. He answered his phone right away, showed up for a quote (on time!) and impressed me with his knowledge and experience. I also found him to be friendly and honest. And when the job was done, I came home to a yard cleaner than when I left it in the morning. Need I say more?

I bought a new gas range that needed a larger gas pipe than I had and the gas installer red tagged my pipes. I did not like that man so I looked elsewhere to hire someone to change the existing pipes. I found George on Homestars and sent him some photos of my issue. While he was doing work in my area, he popped over to my place to take a look in person. George is very nice and easy to talk to. He respected my many questions and was very responsive on email and telephone. When I decide to hire a contractor, I like to know I can get in contact with them and many contractors are difficult to communicate with. Anyhow, his work was quick, clean and thorough. I recommend him.

Hey Daniel and thank you for the great review! I am glad I was able to assist you with this red tag. The code book has been written based on many years of proven unsafe situations and it is our responsibility as Gas Technicians to enforce them. It is never an easy or desirable thing to do however everyone has a different approach. Ultimately I am glad everything is now up to code and correct. Thank you again for your business, George

I purchased valance lights for my kitchen renovation explaining that each light will be hardwired. At the time of purchase, I was given a good price and friendly service. When my electrician came to install the lights, I was told that these are meant to be daisy chained, not individually hardwired. I returned to the store to let them know this and they said that I need to then purchase a separate electrical box and wire for each one to make it all work. They gave me a discount because of their error but it still ran me an extra $60. When my electrician came a second time, he told me that the wire wold not fit into the boxes they sold me. Instead, the electrician had to open each box and make it work a different way and then strip the plugged wires that came with the valance lights and hardwire everything manually. Needless to say, this cost me more for the electricians time and efforts. I called Empire to let them know this and they asked me what they should tell to the company who makes the lights. I told them they need to refund me my money instead and they agreed and then said they don't want to sell to me anymore so let's finish this. I think they tried their best but we're not as knowledgeable or accommodating as I would have liked.

We moved into an old home with a kitchen that had been done about15 years ago. The cabinet boxes and drawers were in good shape but the style was very outdated and there was some shotty craftsmanship. We learned from a friend about kitchen refacing and read about Canlik Kitchens through HomeStars. Impressed with what we read, we met with a sales associate at their main office and were shown a wide variety of options for every aspect of the kitchen. This included cabinet refacing, adding additional open cabinets, building a pantry, and installing a new kitchen counter and sink/faucet. They worked with us to meet our budget were very responsive on emails and phone calls. I had no reason to worry throughout the entire process - from concept to actualization - as each contractor was very experienced in this line of work. The cabinet installers were skilled and professional, as were the counter installers and the plumber that had been contracted through Canlik. Lastly, Canlik had no issue touching up some minor details before they considered the job complete. They go above and beyond to make sure you are happy at the end of the process. We would recommend Canlik to anyone seeking a more affordable kitchen upgrade.

I found Pierce on homestars and liked what others wrote about him and his company. I decided to hire him and did not regret it. The team that did the work did a great job. The areas that needed work we're complicated and hard to reach but did not seem to be a problem for Tip Top.

Hiring a contractor is always a gamble and I look to homestars.com so I can make a more informed decision about a contractor I have never used before and simply hope for the best. In this case, I seem to have found the best. Rob came immediately to look at the work needed to be done and gave me an honest opinion and quote. The associates of his that did the job we're all polite, on-time, highly skilled and hard working. Rob, in my opinion, has a lot of integrity and he surrounds himself with like-minded people who are out to do great work and not just take your money and leave you with a mess of job.

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
If you are dry walling a closed off room with a doorway... be sure to seal off the door way with tape and a plastic sheet because once the sanding begins, there is not an inch where the dust wont cover if you leave it open.

It was a pleasure meeting you and working with you to complete your project. I appreciated the honesty and loyalty that you had with myself and my staff, you trusted us with your home while you were at work, which in a professional opinion is what makes contractors do a good job. If there is no trust in one or another than things could be rushed and in return have a bad outcome. It was a pleasure working with you and I am very glad that you are happy with the work that has been done. Look forward to working with you again in the future, thank you very much for the review and the trust

Paul at Genesis is an extremely responsible and professional contractor. He was recommended through a family member who was happy with their service and I would recommend him just the same. The contractors who worked on my job were kind and did a great job. Moving into a 90 year old home, finding a trustworthy contractor can be difficult or stressful. In my opinion... you can trust Genesis Roofing.

I recently hired Acadian Contracting to complete work on my garage. The quality of work was very well done and of the highest quality, however the customer service was lacking. The lead contractor was rude and condescending throughout th process (besides the quoting stage). While quality of work is important, I would say customer service should equally be a priority on any size job, as customer appreciation from the company and customer reviews from the client are important at any price point. I rate the job done a 5/5 but I would not recommend them to a friend or family member in the future.

Todd is a very friendly and responsive contractor. He showed up and finsished the job when he said he would and did it with a smile. He and his partner were friendly and easy to talk to. They did everything that was asked of them and a job well done. Their quote was the most reasonable and I recommend them to anyone needing work done.

It didn't take long after moving into a 90 year old home to realize that hiring and dealing with contractors is no easy task. It's always a hard decision to choose a contractor that you have never worked with before. I found out about Sobol on homestars and all the reviews we're accurate. The installers we're clean and professional and Archiel was kind and accommodating. I love the windows and a job well done. They went above and beyond what I expect of a window installer. Highly recommended.
