BBG Carpentry rebuilt the front porch of our house, which had originally been built in 1908. That means that the old porch had lasted 111 years. I am sure the new porch will last longer, long outliving both the present homeowners and new builders; but BBG’s name is on the underside of the porch so that in the future someone will appreciate the people responsible for this remarkable piece of craftmanship.
BBG’s work was meticulous. I was much harder to rebuild the porch thad it had been to build the original—over time everything that was square had shifted and much was never true in the first place. The new structure is much improved, stronger, and greatly modified. We could have been happier with John’s work as a carpenter.
What impressed us even more was his work in cladding the structure in ipe (also sometimes referred to as Brazilian mahogany), an expensive, but very hard and extremely durable material. It is a material that requires great attention to install properly. Instead of using clips, which is what many installers do who are not as adept, John and his colleague Sandro, predrilled and countersunk stainless-steel screws which were then plugged and sanded in order to control for warpage or bending in the deck and fascia boards.
The resulting product does not resemble a deck really, but rather looks like a piece of fine furniture or the deck of an expensive yacht. For example, where the fascia boards meet each other the miters are beautifully precise and exact from top to bottom. BBG’s attention to detail and desire to do the very best work was produced one of the best experiences we have ever had over a decade of thoroughly renovating our old home. I think I can say that John and Sandro were almost as proud of their work as we were and continue to be pleased by it. Every day we leave or return to our house we have the opportunity of enjoying a truly magnificent work of art. For that we are extremely thankful. It is so rare to deal with a company so dedicated to excellence in their work and eager to exceed the expectations of their clients.
