Save yourself the headache

If you look at the Consumer Protection Ontario site, it lists out things to be aware of when selecting someone to do work. I see that I got 2 out of the 3 "Common Home Renovation Issues". Dry-Max just happened to be in the area and gave me a deal because they were doing work in the neighborhood. They also needed me to pay "for materials", even though I wasn't satisfied with the final result. They promised to come by the next day to correct it, but never showed. More on that below.

Some of the issues I encountered:

- They put a hydraulic cement in my basement to prevent water getting in from behind my brick wall. I see now that I just have wet brick and wet patches visible on the cement wall.

- They filled in my window well after they dug down to try and find cracks in my foundation. They promised to come back the next day fix it, and said they would pick up the window well for me. After having to purchase it myself, they did not in fact come the next day, and resulted in a month of, "We'll come in the next day or two", followed by another month's delay in the actual scheduling, and even then only after we got into an argument where they told me they were doing me a favor by agreeing to come fix the window well. With the rain we've had, and the fact that they filled in the well up to the level of my basement window, I had to do the job myself so that the rain didn't leak into through the window.

- The sand that was put down in between my interlocking stones came out after the very first rain.

- They also damaged my coat closet in the basement, and spilled 6L of laundry detergent on the floor, which they didn't even mention, let alone clean up. Instead they covered it with a plastic sheet for me to find later.

All in all, a terrible experience, and that's my lesson learned to never accept a job from someone coming by door to door.
