concrete path & steps

I hired the above to install a concrete path & steps at the south side of my house & the job turned out to be an absolute disgrace. His finish (troweling) was atrocious, he supplied me with a detailed drawing along with his quotation on how the re-enforcing steel was to be installed. I felt he did not follow his spec., so upon completion, I had the concrete x-rayed & this confirmed my suspicions. There were just four pieces of rebar installed that would serve no purpose. The path has a twist to it & it slopes the wrong way in towards the house. I requested he returned my deposit which he refused & he came by my house demanding cash payment in full. His final words were "see you in court".

Approximate cost of services:
$4,000.00

Company Response

Hello Davep, despite our disagreements towards how the situation turned out with the job in question, I do sincerely hope you and your family members are keeping good health during these tough times.

Re: Concrete path and steps.

My company and each employee have a strict policy of : Best Foot Forward. Proper attire, behaviour, manner and disposition at all times.

Our client, Daveyp, from the start of excavation watched over every step performed. On completion of our extensive formwork, he brought over his neighbours, boasting on the quality of the form work. The next day requesting changes to width and also adding an additional 11 feet to the length. My man on site having cleared it through the office then informed the client "no charge" on the extra labour, only the material cost required. The client responded with " why would I need to pay anything more?" The First interaction that was not favourable from the Client's side.

Concrete arrived late afternoon due to COVID restrictions, finishing at dusk my men staying late into the evening under lights. That night it poured rain on the site (unforecasted). The next morning my employees arrived expecting a bad finish that would require remedial work. They were met by the client who had stepped on the pathway walking toward my guys who were told to clear off you are not working here any more. They explained they were there to do remedial work to correct the finish and were denied access. Company policy states no arguing with the client whatsoever.

Myself, I phoned the client in hope we could arrive at some agreement to make this right. My calls were unanswered. Again unanswered, while parked out front of his home the client informed me I was not wanted on his property. Apologizing and attempting to explain what could be done was repeatedly told no.

The client's deposit he attempted to claim back was denied as it was not enough to pay for the material cost. The client wrote the Better Business Bureau which we followed through with and they closed the case in our favour having been judged to have made every effort to satisfy the client. The client now apparently adopted a policy of social shaming on the internet that we will not participate in. We are willing to cooperate with our clients and follow through at all times however cooperation must be a two way effort.
