Cabin restoration: Fireplace and exterior walls
Nothing but great things to say about this down to earth master stonemason. Brian's amazing stonework is a key part of our intensive log cabin restoration on the Niagara Escarpment where he rebuilt our fireplace from scratch to make it look far better than the original (a fire hazard), while preserving the historic character and feeling of our cabin. We prefer an open fireplace and Brian sourced and installed an old heatilator along with interior fans to help drive the heat. Brian's a humble guy and he'd never say it but we think his work is high art – and he brings a deep understanding of stone and mortar to work his magic.
We also commissioned him to build us a series of exterior retaining walls, using local limestone, fieldstone, and granite from the old fireplace. Again, he flawlessly captured the spirit of the past to give character to the new additions to the cabin.
As an independent stonemason, Brian worked well with our contractor and his team and I've since hired Brian to build a series of exterior dry-stack retaining walls, one of which inspired the curvilinear design for the landscape of our entire garden.
For each project, Brian gave us a clear estimate for time and labour and stuck to it. He had particularly good insights in terms of stone choices and quarries to source it. Could not be happier with the high level of work Brian contributed to our country home.
