Our staircase was previously refinished about 19 years ago just after we moved in, replacing the "carpet over pine treads" builder's staircase. The treads and risers now needed repairing yet the spindles and banister were still in great shape.
We decided to replace the treads, newel posts and risers but keep the spindles and banister, which meant removing the spindles and banister without damaging them. I knew that our ask would be viewed by most contractors as unorthodox and that it came with greater risk. We gathered 5 quotes from various contractors. Funny thing is, 2 of them later reconsidered and retracted their bids. Although they didn't say why, I assume they didn't want the added headache and risk of removing the spindles and banister without damaging them. Of the remaining 3 bids, Bob's bid was the highest, although not by much. Yet the reason we decided to go with Bob was because he instilled the most confidence in us. He said what we wanted could be done but it would be challenging.
We are incredibly happy with the results and especially with what Bob was able to deliver. And not one spindle was damaged in the process. More so, Bob was incredibly polite and patient with us. He listened to our concerns before and during the job and addressed them all to our satisfaction. I would highly recommend Bob to others.
