I now know how renovations should be done!
Hi Katherine,
Thank you for your review. I would like to clarify exactly what went on with your project since I see several facts from your review are missing.
Yes, you are correct in saying that you had a bit of a delay. Again, much of the delay was caused by the fact that you added to the scope of work half way through the project including a significant amount of work on your main floor. I was always very transparent with you regarding the extra time we would need to complete yet it was expected by you somehow that even though the work increased, the timing shouldn't.
I admit I had challenges with a trade and needed to find a solution, which I did at absolutely no additional cost to you whatsoever. Again, you always seemed very happy with the work, came to site often to see the progress and even graciously gave the first contractor that you are speaking negatively about, concert tickets for all his hard work when we completed.
Originally there was a piece of flooring at the threshold of the basement bedroom that needed to be addressed. It was done in a timely manner when brought to my attention in July of 2020.
In February of 2021 you reached out to me stating the issue came back. When I brought in my contractor to take a look, he confirmed that the two boards that seemed to have lifted at the joint (not the same location where the original repair was done) were in fact water damaged.
Upon entering the basement apartment with the contractor, we noticed that the it was unkept and had a unpleasant smell. Your tenant showed me the spot of the floor at the threshold where the original repair was done, told me everything was good, and even made a comment about how she still hadn’t taken the masking tape off the floor since the repair was done back in July. When I explained to your tenant that this new lift in the board was water damage, she definitely had a guilty reaction to the news. It smelled as though they had not been using their exhaust fans (kitchen or bathroom) properly at all which was suggested at the time. I find your statement of mould being found in the cold room suspicious seeing as it wasn't brought to my attention until your review.
I reported the finding on the flooring back to you the same day after my visit in February and did not hear back from you until July.
Five months later (from what your tenant revealed, you had not been in the country for several months) you’ve reached out threatening to go to social media to tell about your “experience” unless I rectify the problem immediately.
Furthermore, you had disclosed to me that this was your first home and first renovation. You reached out to the online community to find contractors and was recommended by a past client of mine. You had also spoken with my references. I was always transparent, kind and tried to accommodate your changes and budget as best I could. You chose to work with me and my company based on your own research.
Even at the very end of the project I re-levelled your entire garage floor at no extra cost to you, even though we had only agreed to do a small patch repair where the garage met the driveway on the original contract because of your budget constraints, as a sign of appreciation for your business.
As I’ve always said to you, I stand by my work, and am happy to resolve a problem where I can, but it’s unfair that you believe I should be repairing damages caused by your tenants.
I hope this sheds some light on the other half of the story.
Thank you
Elysha Phillips
Hi Linda,
Thank you for writing your review.
Its on not only in my company's best interest but also in the interest of my trades to truthfully disclose the reality of this situation.
Just to clarify, the project took just over 6 weeks as per our agreed upon timeline. As you were well informed in the beginning, the project would take approximately 6 weeks from the day we started demolition as per your original contract that you signed. The review was made to sound very nonchalant, but as we both know, there is more to this than what has been stated.
Yes, we did remove the kitchen, removed a wall, removed your flooring, rebuilt a drop ceiling, rebuilt a half wall that you originally asked us to remove, we smoothed out the popcorn ceiling in your entire condo, ran new lines of electrical for your new potlights and dimmer switches you requested mid-project, ran all new electrical lines for your appliances, relocated your thermostat, add new electrical outlets, relocated switches, we scratch coated the kitchen floor and installed new tile, we had to install cork underlay and engineered wood flooring throughout your condo, installed new baseboards and shoe moldling, we had doors to cut down and reinstall due to height changes from your original floor, and paint the kitchen area and installed the backsplash and did all the plumbing connections once the counters were installed. Once the cabinetry was installed (which was delivered a day early) we faced a couple challenges with the cabinetry that were quickly remedied (within a couple days) and still completed on time. The countertop templating and installation was expedited, again, within our schedule and we completed the project 10 days earlier than what was stipulated in the original contract. Aside from the work stated above we did several items for you at no charge. These items included: Dismantling your built in closet and relocating it for you to the opposite side of your room, painting the wall in preparation for the closet, remedying electrical issues you were faced with due the outdated electrical panel we were dealing with, building out the kitchen wall to accommodate an unanticipated plumbing challenge we had to contend with, installing a light fixture you purchased last minute and installing tile at your peninsula, and we also returned your extra wood flooring at no charge to you for our services. On top of all that, I even negotiated a much larger amount that you received via your insurance claim for the flooring replacement as you were originally ill-informed by the insurance adjuster. You were EXTREMELY grateful for that and we even spent lunch together (it happened to be Valentines day) after that meeting! You had also praised our crew for the clean and efficient way they were working. Our crew was courteous, clean and professional the entire project. The entire project was going very well and in a timely manner up until the last two weeks, where you took it upon yourself to contact my trades behind my back and try and arrange to have work done outside of my arranged schedule. You were rude, condescending, aggressive and vulgar, not only to myself, but also to Luis and his crew and even my flooring company. I understand you were also anxious to get back into your home, but your level of inappropriate behaviour both in person and via emails was unnecessary for a mature 60+ year old woman.
The final product turned out beautifully and one of my trades doing work in your home told me how you told him how happy you were. We are not deserving of a 2 out of 10. This is not reflective of the quality of work that was done , the timeline or the pricing, it's clearly a reflection of something else that is out of my control. However, you are entitled to your own opinion, even though its clearly falsified.
If anyone reading this wants further information, please feel free to contact me. I have no qualms about discussing this or disclosing the disrespectful emails received from this client.
I also have the final photos for this project, since Linda had only posted a couple photos from the first few days of demolition.
