Carpet destroyed - wrong chemicals used and no compensation
I asked Ben to clean a pure lambswool carpet in my landlord's house, after my dog peed in a corner. He did not do a patch test and then he used the wrong chemicals and left orange streaks all over the cream carpet, which covered the entire basement, wall-to-wall. He came back twice, each time using different chemicals, and each time making it worse, by adding new orange streaks. I specified that it was pure wool before he started, but he dismissed this information, saying it was a blend. When it was clear that the carpet was destroyed, I suggested in a phone call that we should stop trying new chemicals and accept that the carpet would need to be replaced. I subsequently sent Ben a polite letter requesting that the cleaning fee be reimbursed and that he cover the cost of the carpet. Ben did not respond to my letter, nor to subsequent phone calls from an advocate. While he was courteous in my home and did take steps to rectify the problem through recleaning, when it became clear there was nothing to be done, he disappeared. I spent two years reimbursing my landlord for the carpet, and have just finished making payments. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a contractor, and it cost me dearly.
