Renovation Nightmare: A Cautionary Tale of Incompetence and Delays

UPDATE: Despite AM's response below I have communicated with them regularly via email and made further payments to this project. The photos accurately reflect AM's work as you can see their logo in the photos. AM has pushed blame to the manufacturer when in-fact many issues has been their installation (again, shown in the photos). AM has also threatened legal action against me as this review is causing them damages. Despite no further work being completed to fix the damages AM will also not discount anything off the total bill. I hope to come to a resolution with them.

As an experienced professional in residential property renovations, I strongly advise against using AM for any renovation projects. This detailed account of my ongoing experience with AM should serve as a cautionary tale for anyone considering their services.

We own a family cottage in Tobermory, Ontario, built in the early 1990s, and decided it was time to replace nearly every window and door, including five patio doors, over ten windows, and one main door. After meeting with Zach, their sales representative, we were impressed by the quality of the windows and doors demonstrated, including a live blow torch test. We agreed to the contract in September 2023, with the understanding that the work would begin before the end of the year. However, the positive experience ended there.

By January 2024, no work had commenced despite multiple promises from Viki, their project manager. After escalating the issue to Andy, the VP of AM, work finally started around January 20th, delayed due to supposed manufacturing issues.

The initial installation of the upper floor windows revealed numerous problems:
- Overcutting the vinyl siding.
- Breaking a chandelier by the front door during window delivery.
- Inconsistent application of spray foam, resulting in gaps and overfills.
- Damage to the vinyl siding.
- Leaving gaps around windows in the middle of winter.
- Wavy and uneven drip flashing installations.
- Faulty patio door locks and damaged foot pieces.

Despite documenting these issues and communicating them to Andy, who promised resolutions, the problems persisted. When work shifted to the basement, the poor quality continued:
- Failure to clean up pooled water, causing damage to non-pressure treated wood.
- Severe overcutting of the concrete block.
- Incorrect installation of a casement window (wrong orientation).
- Demolished concrete block around window.
- More gaps in the spray foam, again during winter.

Andys assurances of fixing these issues led to more delays and excuses. When they attempted to install a 16ft patio sliding door upstairs, there were more issues:
- The patio door would not lock or align correctly.
- The door header and frame were uneven.
- One sliding door would not open properly due to misalignment.
- The doors failed to seal properly.
- Missing weather protection strips and bumpers.

Upon further investigation, I discovered that despite Zachs claim that they manufactured their own windows, the actual manufacturer, Stage Windows, identified the installation issues as AMs responsibility as per their written report.

After seven months and 35% payment, the project remains incomplete with persistent issues. AMs failure to deliver on their promises has caused substantial delays and frustrations.
I strongly advise against using AM for any renovation project. Their lack of professionalism and quality workmanship has been evident throughout this ordeal.

Company Response

Cyrus

We are very disappointed that you chose to post multiple negative reviews before responding to your email regarding payment, and are now no longer answering us via phone. Also posting incorrect photos of the current state of the project as these were all rectified or mid way through project.

Like we have stated in our many previous emails we understand and have answered all of your concerns but also feel it is very productive to be transparent. We have always communicated with you and went above and beyond to get your project completed and keep you happy.
As we let you know the issue with completion is related to a manufacturers defect on the patio door. We want to get this project done as much as you do as we’ve been waiting on payment and have paid all labour and materials on your project.

Attic re-insulation

This was a multi stage project that saw a crew arrive each morning over 3 straight days. Each day, the crew arrived promptly to complete their stage. Clean up of work area was excellent. Excellent professional service from the crew who were attentive and considerate to my questions and dis well to explain the process. Each crew left after a thorough cleanup and minimal interruption. Work completed as quoted and on time. They even took pictures and sent it to me with a thank you for allowing them to help me. Perhaps you could find a cheaper quote but you will NOT get the skilled labour and support their young families with good compensation and benefits. Backed by a guarantee that you will appreciate on their materials and work. We'll done!

Patio door

We had a patio door replaced and they arrived to install and the door was the wrong size and the operator was reversed. They reordered and came again to install and this time it was okay. On the first door install, I noticed the screen was not a tight fit and poorly installed. On the second door, the screen again was bulging and not installed well, I swatted a fly and the screen let go completely, now a 5 inch opening. I called and they said someone would be out to repair, weeks passed, called again, same answer. weeks passed and then called salesman Mike who said he would look into it. weeks have passed and still no repair, no phone call to follow up. Would I recommend this company, based on customer service, NO. My husband will probably have to repair this because I have no faith in them showing up to do it. I'm afraid this is a company who once they have your money, you will never see them again. Buyer beware!
Within 24 hours of posting this review, I received a terse reply with no apology and after much dialogue, a service person did come out and repair the screen. The screen apparently is warranted for 30 days which I did not know because I did not get any warrantee information at time of purchase. Damage was within that time frame.

Leaking Roof

After 3 years, the roof is leaking in 3 different spots. Have been trying to get it fix for 8 months through the Collingwood office to no avail. The kitchen ceiling is starting to sag with paint peeling off. The roof did not leak before AM roofing put a new roof on. This company is a disaster. Stay away!
Update. The kitchen ceiling actually collapsed before AM Roofing would send someone to fix the roof. Thank god my 93 year old mother was not in the kitchen when it collapsed.
January 2024. The kitchen ceiling paint is starting to peel again after the repair in August 2023. They promised to have someone here today January 9, 2024 and no one showed.

Extremally poor customer service

After a complete roof replacement with the preferred protection warranty I developed a condition over time which mirrored itself on my neighbors roof. Our installs were 1 day apart.
I spoke to the AM rep at our local trade show and addressed this concern. He took my information and would forward it on to his supervisors. Hearing nothing I called and was told the matter was on the Production Managers desk. I left the 1st of several voice mails.
Two weeks later I attended the office and spoke to their receptionist, gave my information who was aware of the concern as my neighbor had called.
Another week+ nothing.
Eventually an appt was made with neighbor only... where the Mgr was a no show.
That appointment wasted time and money!

This matter is still outstanding.

In my opinion, AM Roofing has clearly demonstrated extremally poor customer service.

Siding and Window Renovations

AM Roofing was a great company to work with! They were very hard working, respectful and always willing to help answer any questions we had. They always kept us in the loop of what was happening and asked our opinion on certain jobs before they went ahead because they wanted to make sure it was done properly. We highly recommend this company for any work!

Siding Repair

After calling several other companies with no success, I contacted AM about a minor repair to a small patch of siding that had been torn loose by the wind. The siding was on an area of the house that required a very long ladder to access it but otherwise was just a simple repair. Despite the very small nature of the job they were very courteous, helpful and responsive. The very next afternoon a 2 man team arrived to complete the work. We are very happy with the repair and extremely impressed with the speedy response and level of customer service provided. We have never used AM before but would definitely do so again in future.
