Supply and installation of rigid insulation, siding, window flashing and eaves.

I hired Rob and his team at J&R Aluminum to supply and install rigid insulation, siding, window flashing and new eaves on my newly purchased, in much need of repair, semi-detached home in the Riverdale neighbourhood in Toronto.

Rob and his team were initially quite responsive. The work was done in three days. I had the opportunity to be home during those three days, so I paid attention to the work that was being done.

I caught a number of minor errors during the three days, which was corrected immediately.

I didn't notice until afew days later (when it rained) was they installed an eavestrough incorrectly, such that the water flowed away from the side with the downspout and instead pooled on the other side of the eaves (eventually leaking through the seams and dripping like crazy). Rob quickly came back to repair this.

After I paid the fees in-full, I encountered another minor error that was a major pain. It turns out they accidentally put rigid insulation and siding over my clothes dryer vent - effectivly sealing in the vent.

I ended up having to fix this myself (which was disapointing).

I promised I would update this post if anything developed. Rob followed up with me afew weeks ago to apologize for the problem.

I was impressed that he followed-up (in my experience, most contractors would stick their heads in the sand). Rob's an honest guy, he did good work for value. I think my experience was unusual in this respect.

The best word I could think of to describe their work process was haphazzard and disorganized. They would put the flashing on half a window in the front of the house, then move onto installing an eaves in the back without finishing the first job, then not finish that job either they would start the flashing on another window in the back. I caught a number of errors during the three days, which I was able to have corrected immediately because I was on sights. I say this because not everyone will have the same luxury. That being said, i was initially happy with the results.

One big error his team made which I didn't notice until afew days later (when it rained) was they installed an eavestrough incorrectly, such that the water flowed away from the side with the downspout and instead pooled on the other side of the eaves (eventually leaking through the seams and dripping like crazy). Rob quickly came back to repair this error, but I expect only because I had held back part of the fee to see if any such problems arose.

I have since paid the fees in-full, and have encountered another error made by his crew. It turns out they put rigid insulation and siding over my clothes dryer vent - effectivly sealing in the vent. I can now hear the dryer in effect venting into the inside of the siding. I contacted Rob 3 weeks ago now to notify him of the error his crew made and to ask him to repair it in accordance with his 5 year written services warranty. It is an easy fix, and I'm a relatively reasonable guy and wanted to give him a chance to correct the mistake. He did, after all, give me a 5 year written services warranty.

I have sent several emails and left several voicemails since then. He has not responded at all. I believe this experience seriously calls into question the 5 year services warranty that he purports to offer. I would suggest going with a more reputable contractor for your work if you haven't already had it done. I will try to update my post if anything changes, but for now, I would not recommend J&R Aluminum in light of this experience. But for now I am not impressed.
