Move from Arizona to BC

Our household goods arrived after pick up and storage in Delta with numerous items broken, boxes busted, stacked on top of boxes that were marked not to stack, furniture broken. We were told because we packed many of the boxes it was our problem, yet when we packed the same items on our move to Arizona six years before, nothing was broken. We were eventually given $250 us as a token. Good china, dishes, ornaments and heavy items were smashed.

Approximate cost of services:
$5,500.00

Company Response

After careful review of the file and based on many phone conversations that our office had with this client, Trans Canada Movers would like to reply with the following information.

TCM was contracted to pick up the household goods that had been placed into a storage locker by another moving company. Upon arrival at the client's storage locker our team found the contents of the locker is disarray. There were many boxes dilapidated and in poor repair, not properly prepared for transit, many items unpacked and just thrown into the locker. Trans Canada Movers packed the loose items for transit that were not packaged. It is the clients responsibility to have the boxes packed and prepared to move. This client did not want a full repack done on the dilapidated boxes as they claimed that they had already paid for packing services with the mover that put it into storage. Our team took pictures of the state of this locker upon arrival, as it was not up to our standards.

The contract with Trans Canada Movers included basic liability coverage at .60 per lb, which is industry standard. Under the terms of liability the contract clearly states that boxes self packed (not packed by agent)are not covered for breakage as we do not know the condition of said items prior to packing, nor are we aware of how well they have been packed. The contract has a $350.00 deductible to process any claims. Therefore any breakage of the contents of these dilapidated boxes is not our responsibility. We discussed this with the client on several occasions and recommended that she speak with the moving company that packed and moved the goods into the locker.

On delivery day our team made the full delivery and provided an extra delivery stop at no charge for the client to deliver a bed to a second address. The contract only carried basic liability as the client did not purchase any extended liability coverage. As a good gesture Trans Canada Movers refunded the client $250.00 USD for any inconveniences even though we were not obliged to do so. The client promptly cashed the cheque.

In closing Trans Canada Movers is sorry for any inconvenience this has caused the client. We do not feel that we can be held responsible for the breakage and damages to the contents of poorly packaged goods.
