Crown molding and door installation

The Pretty Handy Guy (John) was in fact pretty handy. He was also very pleasant, courteous, and funny. He did a fantastic job putting up new crown molding and fixing existing crown molding.

Would highly recommend him.

Barn doors ( closet doors )

I had bought the barn door kits for our front hall and master bedroom.
It was then that I discovered a few installation details that were beyond my comfort zone.
Knowing John was in this business, I asked him to install these.
Despite the evident challenges of working in an older home (lower ceiling and unlevel floors ) John found the best way through and the result is exceptional.

Repairing walls, painting

I found John through this website and am exceptionally pleased with the service John has provided. Immediately upon entering my home, I found John to be professional with a calming personality and a wonderful sense of humor. His work was excellent. The walls he repaired and painted looked better than when I bought my home. His work is seamless. He is an expert at what he does. The cleaning up part of the process was attended to with as much professionalism as the start of the project. Once you hire John, you will have him return. Thanks John!

Great service and attitude!

We called John as there were so many small projects around the house which weren't getting done and he came to our rescue. John was very profesisonal and delivered high quality workmanship. While we started off with just a few small projects (hanging coat rakcks, building out the railing for our son's bunk bed, etc...) we have already started our next list of projects for John to tackle.

$400.00

new gates and other small jobs

John returned to our home to replace two gates that seen better times. Along with this job he also completed a few tasks around the house that needed to be repaired or replaced. As always we were pleased to have John in our home. John is pleasant and an excellent worker who always puts good effort into his work. He certainly is a good problem solver and makes good suggestions when requested. We look forward to having John return in the spring.

Closet Construction

John did excellent work building a hallway closet for us. The closet looks like it's always been there and blends seamlessly with rest of the room. He matched the paint and trim to the existing paint and trim which we really appreciated. John also did some minor work in our garage for about $300.

The lack of a 5 star review is for a few reasons. 1. The initial quote was quite far off (~$500) from the final bill and this was due to the fact that he didn't accurately account for the type of trim we had. He quoted us for pre-fab trim and ours was milled trim. We feel this is something he could have known when he quoted us at the beginning but perhaps not? Also, he had to source a matching door from somewhere in Toronto which added to the cost. Again, this could have been something account for from the beginning. The actual cost is less of a concern it's more that it wasn't very accurate to the quote and we were surprised with the final price. We know this can happen of course but it seems like these things could have been more accurately accounted for at the beginning. 2. We had to ask him to come back to finish the project. He didn't install a rail and shelf in the closet which we had discussed prior the commencement of the project. 3. There was a lot of debris left on our property that we feel should have been disposed of by John. There were drywall and trim off cuts and scrap wood left in the garage. Again, we don't mind him leaving behind the extra trim which we paid for but the dust and debris should have been removed or at least put in a garbage/recycling bin. We had to load our car with the garbage and find a dumpster to dispose of what was left.

These are very small complaints and overall we are very happy with the work. John is a very nice person and we felt comfortable having him in our home.

Thank you John!

Company Response

Thank you for taking the time to write this review on the work I completed for you. I am happy that you like the finished product and appreciate you outlining the area’s of my work that you feel I can improve. The final cost was above the estimate but I had informed Ashleigh there would be an additional cost at the time I found the trim to be custom milled which I had to source out. The door size she decided upon was also not a stock size and had to be ordered as well. I also told her I would not be marking up supplies to help keep costs down. I had forwarded photos of the finished closet to her as Ashleigh was out of the country and she reminded me of the rod and shelf. I promptly returned and installed them and them forwarded photos of the closet with the shelf and rod. The remaining custom trim was not removed as it is always a good idea to have some extra on hand for future repairs. The box of debris in the garage is on me as I had put it in there to keep it out of the way during renovations and slipped on disposing if it. I would have gladly returned to dispose of it if asked. If you need any work done in the future I would be happy to help. Thanks again for the project, John
