New wiring to decommission knob & tube wiring
Like other owners, I wanted to shop around for insurance quotes, but was always asked if there is any knob & tube wiring in my home. Because there is, that was as far as the quote went. I contacted 3 electrical contractors who all state they deal with old homes with K&T wiring. Bill's quote and information concerning what work would be mandatory (by ESA) and what would not was the most comprehensive and understandable of the three. I decided to go with KNT after viewing one of their job sites.
The work took a week as stated and his electricians were all very professional and respectful of my floors and furniture. It was necessary to cut a number of small holes in some walls and ceilings but the number was kept to a minimum and the old plaster/lath walls did not seem to suffer. The subsequent patching of the holes was done very well and I was able to sign off on all of them before the work was concluded.
The fact that KNT Electric specializes in knob & tube replacement sets them apart from other electricians who do more general electrical work and therefore don't have that level of experience dealing with the precocities of "vintage homes".
