Troubleshoot and replace failing dimmer switch
For about a week or so, we noticed periodic flickering of the eleven 50W halogen pot lights in our kids playroom after being turned on. The flickering in itself seemed odd, but then one night the dimmer switch itself began to loudly hiss and buzz once turned on. We immediately turned the light off and knew we needed someone to come and take a look at it right away since this was a well-used kid’s play area. Not being totally comfortable with electrical problems, we weren’t taking any chances with children’s safety being involved. We found CLI by reading reviews on Homestars and gave them a call around 9am one day during the holidays. We received a call back within a half hour and they were able to have someone come out that same day. Adam from CLI arrived right on time per the window time given to us, and right off the bat he was both courteous and energetic. He investigated the problematic dimmer switch and was able to conclude that the switch itself was beginning to fail. He made sure that there were no shorts or wiring issues and checked the actual draw from the pot lights to ensure the dimmer was rated appropriately for the number of lights. He replaced the dimmer switch with a new one (he had a few to choose from in the truck) and put everything back together. All along the way, Adam was happy to answer my many questions (I’m a curious person). Adam is a super polite, patient and an enthusiastic gentleman. The charges to come out and troubleshoot were explained beforehand, discussing over the phone we knew the range of replacement dimmer switch costs (assuming that was the issue) and the limited inclusion of labour in the base amount. Final pricing was in line with what was discussed. While this job may be considered by some to be “easy” or on the smaller scale, to us it was way too important to take the problem lightly with young kids using that room daily. We are relieved that this issue is now resolved – thanks CLI!
