Basement Waterproofing

I called in Nusite on behalf of my landlord to repair a house downtown. There was a large leak in the apartment I was living in. I called them from the internet and got a few quotes. Most were pretty similar but I decided on Nusite because of the salesman. Dave came out and ensured me the job would be done smooth, clean and any issues would be brought to my attention during the job. All of the above promises were kept and I am happy to say the basement is still dry. They removed my sidewalk, dug out and replaced weeping tiles. I was told I needed a sump pump and opted to take it as the reason for having one makes sense. I was worried about the noise but so far it has been ok! It has been over a year now and I would say thanks to the Nusite team. I would recommend them anytime you have a basement issue.

Wall proofing

I usually don’t do reviews, but since I couldn’t find one on this company at that time, I thought it could be helpful, specifically when you happen to be a woman dealing with these things on your own. Nusite is part of Trusted Pros which I thought would demonstrate a strong work ethic even though I was not able to find a single review. Initially I met with Eric who sold the job and also detailed the process. Eventually a sump up had to be installed should they not seen one after excavating. Sergei was the contractor in charge of the work. He came with his guys; the first day everyone came included Eric who explained the job. Once the workers had excavated quite a lot, Serguei saw a hole in the wall, which was brought to my attention, he seemed to care about doing the job well, and I really appreciated his concerns; therefore he stopped and told me to call him once this was fixed. I hired a general contractor who was surprised to see the site was not well protected, and rain would further damage my house, so I was advised to have Serguei back to protect the site; I called him, but said he was far and couldn’t come at that time, which I could understand, but he did not offer any alternatives, which meant he was not interested in doing this. Luckily Steve, the contractor was willing to do so, even though he was not hired, I must say that was quite a relief. Once the wall was fixed, Serguei came back to finish the water proofing. Once he was done, I asked him if a sum pump was required, he had forgotten about it. I thought, oh well… I knew I could pay in installments, I asked him to do so, I gave him my credit card number, but this also, forgotten! A month later it snowed, melting early January, and my basement got water as if half of a job had been done! I called Eric who told me to contact Serguei. I did so, he was away and told me to get back to him in March, which I did, and became quite tenuous to have him on the phone; even my contractor Steve helped me to connect with Serguei and the company, but nothing was happening. According to my contractor there were issues at the footing, and the excavation was not deep enough. Finally Serguei agreed to come with his guys; he came 2 months later on his own. he fixed the membrane by sealing it and fixing some holes, which was just confirming the whole mess I was experiencing quality wise. Because he came alone, he was not able to finish that day. Given how difficult it had been to bring him, I could not wait any longer, I had tenants who were very upset, so I had to move on; so, I had Steve fixing the job, and have had no problems since, this guy is simply amazing. Obviously I would never use Nusite again.

Interior and Exterior Waterproofing

From start to finish, the experience with Nusite was a great one!

The team of David, Joe, and Jennifer provided excellent service. We have some exterior/interior waterproofing, and a sump pump installed as well as demo of our basement while they were there. Joe and his crew were in and out in two days with very little disruption to my wife and I. There were a few minor things that needed to be corrected, but with a quick phone call to Joe he had his crew back at our house the next day to correct everything to meet our expectations.

Overall, the experience was great and we will definitely be using them in the future to lower our basement. We would recommend them to anyone in the future.

Thanks!

Underpinning and waterproofing basement

Nusite was chosen by my contractor who was doing a major renovation of my house. Nusite lowered my basement floor and installed a waterproofing system, including a sump pump and backflow preventer.

Initially I had planned to give them a good review (9 or 10 stars). I was impressed that they showed up every day (unlike my contractor and other subs) and worked steadily. The workers did the back-breaking labour of digging out a whole basement by hand, with apparent good humour, and their supervisor Ryan was very likeable and worked hard alongside them despite being the son of one of the owners. This was just at the time that a house in Toronto had collapsed while being underpinned, killing a worker, so I was reassured that Nusite was proceeding carefully in small sections. My contractor said they did a good job of pouring the new concrete floor.

There were a couple of things that were not as great. For one, they did not supervise the bin collection (for the discarded dirt) carefully, and at one point the bin was dragged across my front lawn, badly damaging it and the front landing pavers; Ryan said he would collect the pavers and set them aside for me to make it easier to re-lay them, but he never did. The owner Geoff Steinberg agreed to give me some money in compensation, but it turned out to be nowhere near enough to do a complete repair. The sump pump they installed had no backup system, so in case of Hydro failure it would not have worked (which of course is likely to be the time it is most needed, when Hydro has gone out because of storms and flood water), and they named a substantial cost if I wanted the upgraded one; my own contractor had to put in the backup himself. They also did not lower the basement quite as much as they had promised initially, without telling me that this would be the case, so I barely got a floor-to-ceiling bookcase to fit. All this lowered my review to 8 stars.

Finally, and this was what turned the tide, the paperwork they gave me was incomplete, leading to months of frustration and wasted time and effort on my part. The City of Toronto was giving a large rebate to homeowners who installed sump pumps and backflow preventers, and Ryan assured me that their work would qualify. Geoff came by himself, mostly I would guess to collect a final payment but also to give me the forms they had completed to pass along to the City as proof of the work. I duly filled out the application and mailed it to Toronto Water. However, the City told me that the information given to me by Geoff was only partly correct, as he was supposed to have given me the actual invoice for the backflow preventer completed by a licensed plumber not by Nusite itself.

(I have to say, I have been impressed by the City staff. Despite some people thinking that city employees have easy jobs or don’t really give good service, the ones I spoke to went out of their way to be helpful.)

When I phoned Geoff, he said he was away from Toronto but would see to finding the correct form when he returned. He expressed concern that I understand one aspect of his bill, that Nusite seemed to be charging more for the work than the plumber would list on his own invoice once I received it, telling me that this was a function of their doing the digging out for the devices which usually the plumber does himself; I wasn’t sure why this was the case, as they were digging out the whole basement anyway so why charge for one section in particular, but I let it go as I was still anticipating a large rebate. So more time goes on, and the City tells me that they still have no updated form. To add another twist, it turns out that the plumber used by Nusite had given a company name that was in fact not properly licensed to do this type of work, and although I called the plumber directly to see if I could expedite matters, he never followed through. I called Nusite’s office several times and left messages, and Geoff never did me the courtesy of responding to them. I finally caught the secretary Wendy in person, and she also sounded worried that I might not understand the discrepancy in the bill amount if I saw the actual plumber’s invoice. She said that they were trying to find the original invoice from the plumber, but that it had been put away in a box somewhere (in an era when everything is via computer!) She said she felt bad about the situation and offered a couple of hundred dollars from Nusite as compensation, but this is not a lot when I was expecting over a thousand dollars in rebate so I did not accept. Finally, the City notified me that because of all the delays in getting the plumber’s invoice from Nusite , they could not give me the rebate for the backflow preventer. (They did provide a rebate for the sump pump, as that was in order.) They agreed to keep the material on file and look at it again later, and apparently when they referred the matter to the Municipal Licensing & Standards Enforcement Unit, the plumber provided the City with a proper receipt (the one that Nusite should have forwarded to me in the first place) and at long last I received that part of the rebate. All this lowered my review to 6 stars.

So be careful if you use them. The work itself seems fine, and of course I’m pleased that my house did not fall down, but make sure you get everything in writing, and double check any paperwork they give you for the city.

Basement Waterproofing & Benching

Gemil was great to work with when I was starting the project. He helped me understand everything that needed to be done beyond any other contractor I had talked to. Ryan worked with me through the whole process when the work started. He took care of everything kept me up to date and made sure any concerns I had were taken care of immediately. When it came to paying the bill Jennifer was pleasure to work with when it came to the payments throughout the job. She was ontop of everything, knew how much was outstanding worked with me on my payment schedule and was all around a joy to work with. I highly recommend this company.

Basement Issues

It is rare, if ever, that a large company that services many customers exceeds customer expectations.
Nusite Waterproofing – and especially their service rep who services our area – Gemil, has gone above and beyond what we had hoped for.
NuSite has been to our home twice in the past two years for 2 separate issues. Last year, we were doing small improvements to our home to get it ready to list for sale. We did our due diligence and called 3 companies – all listed with the BBB – to come an install a new drain in our walkout to bring it up to code. 2 of the companies we called were all too ready to install the drain and they were going to hook it up to our main floor drain system. NuSite was the only company to inform us that it was now against code to do so. Gimel, informed us that the City of Toronto offered rebates on Sump Pumps and that we needed to get one installed so that they could hook up the drain to the Sump Pump.
We put our house up for sale last month and it sold in 12 days. That’s the good news. The bad news is that 2 days after that, we discovered a leak in part of the basement!
We called NuSite immediately and left a message. Gemil called me within 10 minutes. Normally, it would have taken any company at least a week to arrange for a crew to come out to our house – especially after the worst February in 115 years! But after I told Gemil that we just sold the house and, hearing the panic in my voice, he arranged to have crew come out to our house the next day! In 5 hrs, the 3-man crew deconstructed a 15 food area, fixed the foundation crack, installed a French drain and connected it to our sump pump. Clean, quick and efficient and more than reasonably priced.
We are so grateful to Gemil and the NuSite Group for their professionalism and just plain human kindness.

Basement waterproofing

I met with Geoff from Nu-site and he quickly evaluate the problem we were having with leaks in our basement. Geoff left me feeling well informed and confident that the problem would be solved. So far, after 21 months we are free and clear of the nightmare of waking up to water in our basement. Thanks for eliminating that stress from our life.
Sincerely, Ken

Basement Waterproofing

Hired Nusite after shopping several contractors. Very knowledgeable and professional. Answered all my questions and I had a lot. Communicated all risks to me and how they would be managed. Completed thorough on site investigation to diagnose problems. Completed the job from start to finish as planned with little disruption to my wife and I. Final product was impressive. New basement is great. Some small corrections to work made from us asking but nothing major. Highly recommend Nusite.
