Broken part for shower faucet.

After accepting the job to fix our shower faucet Gary of Handyman Selection told me they couldn't find the correct part and asked me to do it myself over the weekend so they could install it on Monday. I had another company fix it for just over $175 on the same day. Gary was "glad" that it worked out for me.

3 weeks later I was sent an invoice for $107 from Handyman Selection. I am currently waiting to hear back on our dispute with the credit card company.

Approximate cost of services:
$107.00

Company Response

Again, we get half the truth from Joshua.
Facts;
1. Client had asked us to source parts for his shower faucet and install them.
2. Client did not know what manufacture it was his faucet.
3. I informed him to send out pictures and it may help find the part. His reply regarding the photos

Hey Gary,

We agree to the terms laid out in the quote sent to us on March 31st 2011 for repair/replacement of our broken faucet.
I hope the photos sent to you help us save time and money.

4. Joshua was informed that it would require some leg work to source it and it would be by the hour. (min. charge of $165.00 for the first hour + $65.00 per hours after, + materials and HST).
5. My tradesman had gone to 2 different locations Moen in Mississauga, and Home Depot in Toronto on his way in to the job.
6. My tradesman called me to inform me that he was not able to source it as of yet as well that he was not feeling well (flu) he was willing to continue. I told him to hang tight and I would call the client.
7. I called Joshua and asked him if he would like us to continue sourcing the material for his job, I told him we would need to go in and check the manufacture and possible go get the part if the tradesman did not have it in stock with him. I had informed him that another manner would be to asked the management company (superintendent) what product had been used throughout the building and purchase the replacement part over the weekend or pass us the info and we would go in on Monday to install it.
8. He agreed and thought it was a good idea.
9. He emailed me back stating;

Subject: RE: Here is your Estimate

"Hey Gary, I left you a voice mail but I just wanted to make sure got my message.
Talked to bldg. management and managed to get a plumber in today who is familiar with the bldg.
Needless to say we won't need anyone in on Monday."

Thanks,

Joshua Squires

I replied back;
"I'm glad it worked out. Take good care and have a good weekend."

I do agree we do not get around as quickly as we should with invoicing clients. Does not mean a client is free from their financial responsibilities to pay for a service requested.

I sent him out the invoice stating;

"Hi Josh,

I hope you can appreciate that we need to charge you for the time spent by the tradesman. I reduced the min. charge on this job from $165 to $95 to include the time the tradesman spent trying to find the part for your job.

His reply back was;

Hi Gary,

Your guy called in sick so I hired someone else, end of story. If you think you have a case I'll see you in court.

Sincerely,

Joshua Squires

10. I asked him if he would call me so we could come to some agreement on the charge and his position was he was unemployed at the time and it was only a rental unit and felt that we should not be paid anything for our efforts even knowing from the beginning that he would need to cover the time the tradesman spent, and hung up on me.
He called me back to continue the conversation only to lie about the events that took place.
I spent about half an hour with Joshua to try and come to some compensation but he would not budge.
11. We do have the right to charge him the $165.00 plus HST but only charged him $95.00 plus HST.
I did my best and hope people see that there is 3 sides to every story.
We pride ourselves with being honest and fair with clients to the best of our ability, we are not perfect, but try and learn by our mistakes.
I will make a policy change with an agreement in our estimates to have the client sign off acknowledging that if we are to source materials for a job, that they realize we will invoice them for time spent as the materials are part of their job.
I do ask clients to be reasonable with their contractors, we are not miracle workers.

If you have any questions please call or email us.
