Kitchen and living room renovation

As returning customers to Capital City Drywall, once again we were not disappointed. Following a major home renovation there were several areas in need of patching, including ceilings and it is impossible to see where the "old and new" meet. All workers were extremely efficient and polite and did excellent work. We would highly recommend them.

new house construction

I have a project management background, so my expectations are a little different from those of the average house owner. Usually there is lots of leftover board lying around to get rid of, gobs of mud dried to the floor, dust everywhere: kind of goes with the job. Capital City had a good price, turned up on time, worked quickly, scraped up the mud as they went along, took away all the old board and swept the house clean. There were some tricky taping spots in the attic rooms, but they took it all in stride, and did a great job. And on top of it all, the crew was great to work with. It doesn't get better than that. Very impressive.

repair of drywall and painting, in an entry hall, laundry room and kitchen

Great skill, patience, and courtesy were displayed from start to finish, from the estimator, drywall person, painters, and paint supervisor; and the project was completed in the projected timeline.

Complete Home Reno

Where to start! We choose this company because they seemed to be able to do all that was required, but the relationship during was so awful. After we had all the ceilings boarded and walls skimmed over we were not pleased with the work. From the bgn. we requested smooth walls, and had workers tell us this was impossible, and that once you painted you would not tell about the areas we were concerned about. This included tiny little bubble that made hundreds of pin holes, areas where it was clearly not sanded, you could see the mud swipes. Areas that were just completely missed all together! Once we started to worry we decided to go with a diff. painter and he took us around with a light to see how bad it really was. When I contacted Tim about it, I was told 'Who looks at it with a light?' Well I defn. did after he made that comment. He then came back one day to personally work on the issues and he was here for nearly 12 hours, and had to have his guys come back. You could feel the bad vibes, I assume the workers got in a bit of trouble! During this I had requested for some backup to the quote, as what was supposed to be a 2 week job, was maybe 3.5 days. The workers showed up for a few hours a day and apparently we were double scheduled so you could clearly tell we weren't priority. All this work that had to be fixed put us off our reno timeline, which essentially cost us money and to this day I have not received an explanation of the invoice. He did work to reduce the invoice by $1,000 due to all the issues that arose, but we felt it was our right to have an idea about how the cost was derived. Out of all the trades people they were in and out the quickest and wanted the most money! Please beware of the quality of this company, the communication with Tim and ALWAYS ask for a reasonable explanation to the quote.I couldn't get an answer at all, I thought maybe hours, or sq. ft.... but nothing. I was told, sometimes we over estimate and sometimes we underestimate. I suppose we were just the job that they mad money to cover their last loss. What a terrible feeling.

Drywall & Painting

Where can I start? These guys were the least expensive quote we received and clearly you get what you pay for.

First I should say, the owner and his son were always polite but polite did not give us good drywall. We also hired them to paint all ceilings, the bathrooms and utility room.

It started with the man who does the boarding. He came by to visit the weekend before the job was to start. We were undergoing a mass renovation including new windows and placement for windows. We showed him what areas were going to be windows and to not board over as well as what areas were no longer going to be windows and to board it up (these areas were already framed).

The morning of the job, we arrived at the site 5 minutes late to unlock the door for the crew. They were clearly in a hurry to get going as time is money. When I tried to go over again about the windows, the guy stated "we went over this yesterday, so we will just get going".... ok.

Well, not only did they leave cigarette butts on our property, they also covered 2 windows that were not meant to be covered and did not cover another that was supposed to be. I called and asked them to rectify this. The did, or at least tried as they still missed a window.

Once everything was done, we were able to move back in and get to work on our own painting. This is where everything really started to turn bad.

As I painted the house, I came across so many issues. In the entrance, there were scrape lines on both sides of the ceiling from the mudding as well as in the same area on the wall, a 8"x6" patch and another smaller patch had what looked like hundreds of pinholes in it.

The screw pops. I think in the end from what we fixed ourselves and what they came back to fix, we had about 20+ of them.

They also did not cut around a few of the light switches properly, so when you put the plate on, there is a small hole you can see.

In the office was the worst. You could see a large squiggle/scrape line of mudding and two areas that bubbled out - one quite large.

There were also areas where the mudding had not been sanded and it just jutted out.

After fixing as much as we could as it was found, it became too much so I called Tim to ask for him to rectify this.

When he came by to take notes of everything, he mentioned that drywall contractors are more or less allowed so much leeway for not getting it right. At least I think that's what he was implying. I asked him in turn if he felt these errors I was showing him were acceptable. He did respond no.

He also made a comment about the lack of light in the house because we had some windows boarded. Except the 2 areas that were the worst had natural light as well as when we came by to see the process while they were doing it, they only had one light at the site when we were there in the evening.

So a few people came by to fix some things. Among them were the screw pops. Except, that some of the screw pops were in the bathrooms and utility rooms that we had hired them to paint. When they fixed the pops, some of the areas were painted over with a brush, not a roller, so you can see brush strokes (since this time, we have had a few more pops). So the money we spent for them to paint these areas, we now have to paint certain walls again so we do not see the brush lines.

As for the light plates, 2 of them were fixed and the rest forgotten.... again.

The office, you can still see the big scrape/squiggle line though not as much and the 2 areas that bubble out, one was fixed and the other you can still see though again, not as much.

They did remove the drywall around the last window they messed up.

After having the owner come by to remedy all of this and there still being multiple issues that my husband and I gave up on having them correct and are still finding more, I would not recommend this company. *We are giving 2 stars because they were polite and they were willing to come back to correct mistakes. However, we are still finding mistakes and did not want continued disruptions to get it right.
