Thank you so much for writing about this scary incident.
I was so dismayed when you called and said that a man approached you on your lawn to tell you that your skylight looked like it had a serious problem.
We had just installed it for you last year, so this seemed rather strange. especially since this well dressed fellow seemed to be able to make such a dire assessment just by looking at the skylight from the street!
The story you told about what followed is something that should be in a crime novel.
Since you felt worried about a possible problem, you let the man go inside your house to have a closer look at the skylight. He got up to the room with the skylight before you, and then you heard what sounded like a gunshot!!!
As you arrived in the room you saw a big puddle of water on the floor, but nothing on the skylight or tunnel or on the man.
This must have been frightening and strange.
But, you are not a fool, and you immediately asked "where did the water come from?". That's when the man tried to baffle you with BS. His "backed up water" answer didn't make any sense since there were no other water marks on the skylight or tunnel.
Then came the attempt at the big rip-off.
The man said that the skylight needed to be completely redone at a cost of $9000.00 ( much more than it cost to do all 3 skylights by our company) and it needed to be done immediately!
When you refused (good for you!), he threatened to report you to the city officials to try to frighten you.It amazes me how someone could try to scam you so badly in your own home.
My guess is that he had some water in some sort of container, maybe a balloon, smashed it on the floor, and that made the loud bang noise. When you called and told me about this, I was 99.9% certain it was a scam, but you were so upset by the whole situation that I wanted to come over and reassure you.
So, when I came over to see the skylight, it was easy to see that everything was fine and this man was trying to scam you.
He saw a senior person and tried to take advantage of you....but, you were smarter. Please remember, any good contractor would have a card, documentation and proof of WSIB, insurance and license. Always ask for it.
