Buyer Beware - Diagnostics Focused on Selling Vs. Need

Over the past two years, the drain hose from the furnace at my elderly mother's home has been leaking where two sections meet. The original installers used a makeshift clamp to stop water from seeping out. This year, I suggested a permanent fix was necessary.

We contacted Controlled Comfort Air Inc. and described the issue clearly: we needed better tubing to prevent water pooling in the furnace. Their technician inspected the system and claimed the problem lay in the cooling mechanism inside the furnace, insisting that replacing the outdoor AC unit and upgrading the coolant system would fix the drainage issue. I questioned this diagnosis because it seemed unrelated to the leaking tubing.

Despite my doubts, we proceeded with their recommendation. They installed a new York AC unit and upgraded the coolant mechanism on June 7, 2024, believing it would solve our leaking pipe problem.

Later that day, water began spewing from new places after we turned on the AC. I immediately contacted Controlled Comfort Air Inc. and expressed my concerns about their diagnosis and the possibility of selling unnecessary services to a senior citizen. The owner promised to visit that evening but canceled, rescheduling for the next morning.

On June 8, 2024, a technician named Victor arrived instead of the owner. I explained the ongoing issue, but Victor wouldnt confirm or deny my suspicions of overselling. Upon inspection, Victor found that the furnace's drainage hose was blocked, likely causing the water backup. He replaced all the drainage hoses from the furnace.

After turning on the AC again, the original leak issue reappeared. I reiterated to Victor that their earlier repairs had not resolved the initial problem. He then removed and cleaned a specific part of the furnace, which finally fixed the leak. Additionally, he installed a new, stronger hose clamp.

While I acknowledged the old AC unit outside, which would need replacement soon, was old, it was operating fine. The costly upgrade pushed by Controlled Comfort Air Inc. was unnecessary. They took advantage of my elderly mother and pushed a service and upgrade that was not necessary at this time.

In summary, Controlled Comfort Air Inc. exploited the situation, selling unnecessary services rather than addressing the actual problem. Their actions lacked integrity and ethical conduct. Potential customers should be aware of this company as their diagnostic focus is on making money and not building returned customers. They have lost our business. I will be filing a consumer complaint and encourage you to do the same should you encounter similar issues with Controlled Comfort Air Inc. or any other self-serving company.

Company Response

Your A/C unit was low on refrigerant and frozen up. You never called the owner as he answers the phone always. If the new hose that victor installed did not work. You need to get a plumber or a pump which was communicated to you by Victor.
