Gut, rebuild, and expand house

After living in our bungalow for 15 years, we knew it was time to build or buy. We checked out the buy options while working with Jason Bunn of UK Construction to develop conceptual plans and a price to do it all. With a budget in mind, we went ahead and did it. We did end up paying more than we planned to for upgraded finishings, electrical, cabinetry, and granite; additional insulation; surprise plumbing problems; and budgeting mistakes. He told us to prepare to spend another 15% above the contract price. That was good advice. Jason was full of good advice, and good service, before, during, and after construction. You can tell he wants to do a good job.

- Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
- If I were going to do it again, I'd still choose UK Construction, but I would have all the materials specified and priced before construction begins. It would take longer that way, and it may not lower the price, but it would reduce the surprise factor.
