my grandmothers dining room suite

I Have to say its funny how you get reviews from complete strangers and base your decisions of weather or not to go with a company on it.....i gotta tell you that i am a repeat customer of the The Master Craftsman and i think yes they are expensive but when you are dealing with quality and sentiments you just cant go with the price!...3 years ago when i first had work done by these guys i felt nervous since i had read some of the reviews before hand, but in the end one cant judge until they experience it themselves!...i recently just got back my dining room suite that i had inherited from my granny 10 years ago. The Master Cratfsman once again proved what a great job they can do!....sure i received the calls just liked everyone else and some suggestions i agreed to and others i simply declined....everyone trys to upsell things in the business world, that doesn't make them a bad company. i recommend this company to those who appreciate quality and excellent customer service staff....that is after all what i have always received...just see for yourself...after all, this company has been in biz for 20 some odd years....it cant be that bad can it! your loyal customer, Janetta

furniture restore

I want to express my sincerest thanks to one and all at the Master
Craftsman for the outstanding results on my antique dining room suite.
From the rep at the Home Show that we left our name with, to Wayne,
the shop foreman who was very helpful, I can't thank them enough.
Everyone was so nice at every stage.
After great anxiety we nervously gave the job to them. Since we had
some other work done several years ago by another company who ruined
our furniture. I say nervously because this bad experience was a
result of what we thought was a well researched choice. We got several
estimates and didn't go with the cheapest one and still ended up with
a bad memory.
The clincher with the Master Craftsman was that they are at the same
address for two decades, however I must say we were still nervous
because of our other refinishing experience. This decade stability
factor speaks for itself and will be a part of all future dealings.
We are enjoying our beautiful furniture and my brother has an
appointment booked to get some work done.

Berger Chair restoration

Several years ago I found a Berger chair replica outside a house where folks had moved out. Knowing the value of these pieces, I snapped it up! I then had it restored by The Master Craftsman as I was told that what I found was a good piece with an excellent seasoned wood frame. Although the upholstery was worn out and springs in the back needed attention, it was worth restoring. I must admit I paid more than I expected but I was sold on the idea of having a top quality piece to keep for life and then pass on to my daughter. i saw it as an investment. When I got it back some 8 weeks later it was worth the wait. I did not even recongnize it! the wood had been restored, as requested, to a mahognony stain from the walnut prior....the upholstery was gorgeous because I choose the fabric and it set of the show wood beautifully - the high contract between the creamy beige upholstery and the red wood was stunning...the double piping detail was flawless, no threads or glue showing! I could find no fault with it...except the cushion...which I had initially choosen to have done in foam should have been in down! I returned the cushion and spent the extra money to do redone in down. The soft feel and warmth of down is the ultimate luxury...and on these cold winter nights I love to relax at the end of a long day on my good quality Berger reproduction....it is like sinking into a hot bath. This morning I came downstairs to find my cat curled up in it as well! Definitely worth every cent and the time it took! Thanks to all at The Master Craftsman.

From the initial visit, when every detail was explained and all the time I needed was given, to the moment when my wing back chair was returned to me, I was treated with the utmost respect and caring from the friendliest of people. The quality of the work done is excellent and I have no doubt my chair will outlive me! I thoroughly recommend The Master Craftsman to anyone requiring a high standard of workmanship.

refinishing old desk

Have just accepted delivery on a very old desk, I purchased at an estate sale. I was hoping that it would turn out okay, based on the damage that the desk had, the age and I wanted the colour to match other furniture in the room. WOW is all I can say, I provided a sample, a drawer from another piece in the room. The match is spot on, the suggestions I was given from the OUTSTANDING customer service staff, were excellent! The piece was delivered earlier than I expected, the process from having the piece picked up to having it redelivered was so easy. I am thrilled. This is the second time I have had work done by the Master-Craftsman. The results are outstanding. I have nothing but praise for the people I worked with, from the repair shop, that rebuilt the piece, to the customer service department,
A job well done.

Thank you all so very much!!

Repair and re staining of a tea wagon

The center piece of our living room a tea wagon that's been in our family for just over 65 years now was damaged after our yearly thanksgiving family get together (my husbands side of course.) The elaborate spindle work on one of the wheels looked to be kicked in and badly damaged. My sister recommended The Master Craftsman. She had a make-up dresser done many years ago and was very happy with the work. They had Jim out the next day. He was very knowledgeable and respectful. He explained the entire wagon needed to be redone in order to disguise the damage. We gave them the job. Our tea wagon returned home just in time for Christmas. My family didn't even notice the damage but commended the new stain. Jim and his shop foreman Wayne were a pleasure the whole way. Keeping us abreast of our tea wagon through the process.

Restoration of two loveseats.

My Partner and I had two loveseats re-covered over the holidays. The work was superb. They even provided us with what they called a "loaner" item, a piece we could use for our holiday guests. This, in particular, was something we appreciated greatly. Requiring certified funds on delivery was a minor inconvenience but I understand their reasoning for this requirement.

Chair re-upholstery

Master Craftsman probably employs the best sales force in the city.

As a salesman myself, I fooled myself into thinking that the quality of the end product would match the finished product.

The chair was a beautiful Scandinavian classic. What we got back was an over-upholstered abortion that would look more at home in a whorehouse.

Company Response

EM in Scarborough, The Master Craftsman prides itself tremendously on its quality of work and its service. I tried to locate your file but because we have very little to work with, I was unable to do so. We checked our customer database all the way back to 2003 for any single chair orders where the client’s initials contained either an E or M. Unfortunately, nothing came up.

Without your file, many questions arise. Did you notify us of your issues? If not, why? Was your chair serviced? What does an over aborted chair look like? What is your issue exactly?

In 2008, The Master Craftsman had over 2500 customers and 8 negative reviews on Homestars or .0032%. Unfortunately, it’s only human to be motivated to post a review when you’re upset and not when you’re happy. We hate to see any negative reviews on here because we care so very much about customer satisfaction but in order to address your issue we need to know what the actual complaint is.

I would value the opportunity, EM in Scarborough, to discuss your issue in greater detail. Please contact me at (905) 794-2047 ext: 250. Nearly all our customers are happy customers, please, give us the opportunity to make one out of you.

Upholstery

After reading several reviews I was very apprehensive to do business with The Master Craftsman. My experiences with my own small business has taught me to view these type of reviews carefully, before making any decisions. Three things came to mind; they are Ontario's largest, how bad can they be? Second, the number of negative reviews is relative to their number of clients. Third, they are restoring people's old furniture. Of course, they'd have some negative feedback.

With that in mind, I decided to proceed with an estimate on my wing back chair. A gentle lady came to my home and gave a very thorough presentation. The price was higher than I expected but it made sense based on the information shared in the presentation. I was impressed and fairly confident to proceed but because of the low grade here I decided to view the shop before proceeding, which the sales person suggested I do. I went and was thoroughly impressed again. The production manager gave me a brief and educational tour, which alleviated almost all of my concern. From here, I decided to go ahead. My chair was returned to me seven weeks later and it was as promised.

Overall, not a single problem. Everyone I dealt with was very professional and polite and the work solid.
