Basement Refinishing, Upstairs Refinishing
We finished our reno last october 2009 and within about 3 weeks the shower that Steve built downstairs became unusable. All of the tiles around the pan cracked and popped off because they did not use proper cement board (they used cement backer board, which is almost like drywall. It is like a sponge and turned to mush on us. He also used drywall screws to attach the improper material to the base, and they were all rusted through and brittle/broken as well. After not using the shower for about 8 months, we have had to labour over it for months to repair it ourselves in our spare time (putting proper cement board on there, re-tiling, regrouting, silicone sealing etc. etc.) as we do not have money to pay someone to come and redo it the way it was supposed to be done. Shower pan had to be completely rebuilt. We did not want to call Steve, because we did not want to deal with his denial. This is after the shower pan was built with no slope, so it didn't drain, and the tile throughout the bathroom was not leveled properly and looks like it has waves in it.
I am writing this review now because I just had to invest another $800 to have someone come and re-texture the whole dining room plaster ceiling where Steve dropped a pipe through the wall on the upper floor and through this lower ceiling. Accidents happen, but Steve left it with a very crappy patch on it (after we had to ask him repeatedly to fix it), without paint etc. Looked like hell.
Steve and his guys do amazing trim/woodwork, and he is a good person at heart I believe, but this shower fiasco is unacceptable and is the result of purely irresponsible workmanship. Again, I would normally call a contractor to fix the problem, but we did not trust someone who did this kind of workmanship back to come back to fix it.
