Basement re-wire

We were provided a fair quote with a thorough explanation, and decided to go with Langstaff & Sloan for all the electrical work in our basement. Brad and others have been on site twice so far and have got each stage of the project done quickly, cleanly, and properly. The quality of their work is superb. This company cares about their clients.

knob and tube removal; new and relocated mast and meter; new outlets and light fixtures

This is a long overdue review to commend and recommend Langstaff and Sloan. Three years ago I contacted the company about removing the knob and tube wiring in my 1930s house. Rob came promptly and provided a detailed quote. He made a number of suggestions and recommendations and explained what the code required but he never tried to 'upsell' me which I very much appreciated. Brad led the crew that did the work and I was impressed with his professionalism and friendliness and his creativity when problems were encountered. The work took the week that Rob had predicted and they cleaned up and made sure that I had power at the end of each day. I was never uncomfortable leaving the house while they crew was working. The holes were plastered professionally and were hardly noticeable in some places. The location of the new mast was a bit of a problem but Rob came up with the perfect solution that solved the problem and passed inspection. A few months ago, during a kitchen reno, I needed some more outlets and light fixtures that had not occurred to me when the previous work was being done. Again, Rob came promptly to provide a quote and the work was done quickly and exactly as I wanted. I would highly recommend Langstaff and Sloan to anyone who needs electrical work done. I will definitely call them for any future work on my house..

Electrical Work

We were very happy to find a reliable company with experience in our neighbourhood to add a 20 amp circuit and GFCI receptacle for a new walk-in tub. Rob patiently explained the best way the installation could proceed and John completed the work quickly and efficiently to the great satisfaction of the company installing the tub. John also went out of his way to find an appropriate waterproof pot light for the tub area. Everything was completed on time and John took great care to do the work required as cleanly as possible. Great job all around! We would definitely use this company again for our electrical work.

Pot lights and full safety overhaul

Langstaff & Sloan were simply amazing. From the very start, Rob took the time to fully understand our needs. We worked out a detailed scope of work that encompassed the whole house. A previous owner had fiddled with the electrical throughout the house and we were concerned about safety issues. We asked that they check ever switch and outlet as well as replacing many existing fixtures and the addition of pot lights The very knowledgable team, lead by Brad, was efficient and detail-oriented. Brad was wonderful!!! The team promptly arrived as scheduled and kept areas tidy as they worked (we have a curious toddler so we really appreciated the extra care they took for her safety!). Brad made sure that he communicated updates, queries and concerns in a timely fashion which gave us real peace of mind throughout the process. After the work was completed, we were pleased to see that the cost of the work was in line with what had been quoted. In fact, Brad found some live wires tucked away in our kitchen cupboards, and thanks to him, we now have under-counter lighting (not part of the original scope of work, but a happy accident! ) In addition, they reassured us that we could call anytime if we had concerns or questions. I would recommend Langstaff & Sloan very highly. Great work guys!

troubleshooting an outlet, lights off upstairs and mounting a ceiling fixture

We called Langstaft and Sloan after attempting to install a celing fixture to replace an old ceiling fixture/fan. Initially after we installed the ceiling fixture, the lights on it would not turn off. After a second attempt reinstalling a nearby light switch, we lost power to several upstairs rooms. At this point, we called Langstaff Sloan. They sent out Brad. Brad remove the ceiling fixture & switch and checked both of them. He discovered that one of the wires.within the outlet box one of the wires had cracked and was only being held together by the insulation. He replaced the faulty wire, replaced the outlet (giving up power to the 2 bedroom without power) and properly remounted the ceiling fixture (it also now works properly).. He was prompt, professional and did a great job in a relatively short period of time.

Glad I sent Brad (young eyes). Sometimes depending on location that can be tough to spot and frustrating to troubleshoot.

Re-wire/Home Automation

We have found Rob Sloan and his crew to be very skilled, courteous, and knowledgeable. The crew is fast and keeps the jobsite very clean. We have used the crew for multiple whole home rewires and more recently had them perform some whole home automation work (audio/video installation). Rob and his crew are always willing to answer questions and educate their clients on best practices and are very willing to respond to any questions and queries about the work they performed. Rob also is very up to date on new trends and is willing to make suggestions for improvement. All estimates we have received from them have been very accurate and well detailed.

Thank you for your patience. We probably did not deserve a "10" at your home either. I don't get very many complaints, but I do pride myself in quick resolutions when they do happen.

Electrical upgrade

We bought a house with bad wiring. Rob came to our house and reviewed all the sockets and switches, and provided a free estimate. He was very professional, and made us feel like he would be able to totally fix all the issues. He is also very good at installing very quiet bathroom fans in very hard areas.

Service

I was getting my house ready to sell and needed to have some work done to my electrical panel in order to pass the home inspection and bring my electrical up to code. The panel was missing the cover and had been discontinued making it impossible to find the replacement part I needed. My real estate agent contacted Robert Sloan who gave him a cover he thought might fit. Unfortunately it didn't. So, I called Robert to see if he would be able to take a look at it. He told me that if they could not find a replacement cover I would need a completely new panel to be installed at a price of around $1,000.00. Robert set up an appointment for that evening with Tim to come over and provide a quote. Being a female, I'm always afraid of being taken by any sort of repair or contract people so I was very sceptical and fully expected to have to have the panel replaced whether I needed it or not. Tim arrived right on time, I showed him my electrical panel and the cover that Robert had given to my real estate agent. Tim took a look and within about 2 minutes told me that the door would fit and the cost to have him repair it would be $80 for the service call and $80 an hour to have him put the door on. While he was there, he noticed a light in my basement that also was not up to code and suggested that he would be able to fix it within the hour along with the panel. Great! Within that hour, Tim had the panel door attached, fixed my light and had the electrical panel switches fully labelled. He also showed me an outlet that would not pass the inspection because it was missing the cover. Tim was pleasant, professional and in the end was able to reduce the cost of my repair from over $1,000.00 down to just $100.00. I would absolutely call on Langstaff & Sloan again!

We got lucky here! We don't keep old electrical parts, but when the Real Estate asked, I happened to have just looked at a job that we were planning to do the very next day. Those people were upgrading to 200 amperes and the brand and size were a perfect fit. It was a very uncommon panel or I might not have remembered. Thanks for the accolades, but we really just got lucky here.

re-wiring of house removing knob and tube

I have an old house that needed to have the knob and tube and aluminum wiring removed. Rob came in ,took the time to really look at the house in detail and gave me a fair quote. The crew of Brad, Colin, Moe, Vic and John were true professionals. Their work was expert the holes in the walls small and the patching was amazing. I just have to touch up a few spots. They worked quickly and efficiently and ALWAYS left the house as clean as humanly possible and totally connected so I could continue to live in my house and work from home. No small requests were too much bother in fact they came up with a few suggestions that just added to the comfort and value of my home!. They arrived every morning on time and were always so pleasant . I really can't recommend them highly enough. LOOK NO FURTHER than this company for your homes electrical re-wiring.

Complete Rewiring

We needed to completely rewire our new house right after purchase and were referred to Langstaff & Sloan through a friend. I was able to e-mail with Rob Lembryk and get some great information and a rough estimate sight unseen weeks beforehand. He then came by the day after we took possession, took the time to answer all of our questions, and calculated a formal quote right in front of us which was great. They were able to start right away and finished within a week, meeting our tight move-in deadline. Vic kept me in the loop while on-sight, asked any questions where he wasn't sure, and made the correct decisions where there was any ambiguity in the instructions.
We asked them to prep some wires for future renovations and they were all put in place and carefully labelled to avoid any confusion down the road.
When the job was complete Vic was patient during the final walkthough and took the time to answer any questions I had regarding surge protectors, light fixtures, electrical safety, using the outdoor outlets, etc and left me feeling very confident in the job that had been done and that everything was in order.
We bought our own fixtures and dimmers, and Vic alerted us that we had bought the wrong combination and was patient with us exchanging them for the correct ones instead of just installing what we had bought, only to have a dimmer burn out within in year.
The patchwork that was done was also top notch, and we have been able to paint right over top of it without any sanding required. This was big for us because we had to move in right after they were done and didn't want dust on all of our stuff. They left the place just as they found it, clean.
Out of the five quotes we received Langstaff was right around the middle in terms of price but made us feel the most comfortable in what we had to do and the best way to go about it.
The job could honestly not have gone any smoother for us and we will happily recommend them to anyone.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Nothing, everything was perfect
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Take the time to lay out exactly where outlets/fixtures/3-way switches/dimmers should go and label things before they start getting quotes. Easier for both sides to understand the job that needs to be done and makes sure that all companies providing quotes are on the same page in terms of what you are looking for. Plan for future development as well and have them run extra cable if needed for renovations down the road.

Hi Geoff,
We haven't met but I am the owner of Langstaff & Sloan Inc. I was on holiday when my staff quoted and completed your home.Thank you so much for your very kind words. I do find that many clients are doing more "Homework" than ever, and Homestars seems to be an important resource. Have a great Easter long weekend!
