Boiler removal/installation and rad installation

I hired Laird and Son to remove an old 1930s boiler and replace it with a newer model. Then I hired them on again to install 3 rads and raise some boiler pipes running across the ceiling.

I found Ron Potter (Sales Representative) to be informative and fair in negotiations. He got me a great price for the job and I was very pleased. I also found their installer, Artie, to do a good job and have great customer service skills. I have to say that overall I was extremely pleased with the work that Laird and Sons did. Although at first, the boiler was not done to what we had discussed, they were eager to get it done right and at no cost to me. I really appreciated Ron and Artie's fairness in the treatment of their customers. I would give Ron and Artie a 10/10, but I deducted 2 marks for my dealings with the office.

I think Laird and Sons is a 8/10 because the job was done right where it counts. However, the treatment I received by Kim in Accounts Receivable was plain rude. The first time I received an invoice, the job was still being modified and was not yet complete. I explained this to Kim and she told me that the job was going to be completed and that I should leave a cheque for Artie to pick up when he left. However, I wasn't going to see the job until after Artie left, so I offered to pay the next morning until after I had seen it myself. Kim was very insistent that they had waited too long for payment and that they wanted it at that very moment. I explained that the delays had nothing to do with me and that I would be willing to make a partial payment, but I wasn't going to pay her money in advance of work completion. Nevertheless, she argued on and on with me until I told her that I would pay the very same day when I arrived home from work at 5:00 p.m. So I left a message for them to process payment the next day. Needless to say, I did not appreciate being hassled for money up front.

I was willing to forget the whole incident until I had to deal with her again on the next invoice. Ron had emailed me a quote for several items and one was moving the rad in the bedroom to the living room. When I wrote him back, I wanted to go ahead with all the items except for the moving of the rad. Before the job was finished, Kim called and charged me for all the items including the moving of the bedroom rad and again wanted payment that very same day when Artie finished. I mentioned that the bedroom rad wasn't moved as part of the job. She then explained to me in no uncertain terms that the rad was moved and that I owed them the money especially considering the fact that they had worked to fix the prior mistakes on the boiler for free. Again, I found myself arguing with Kim over the issue of payment. I invited her to come to my house and see for herself the old rad still in it's place in the bedroom. I don't know why she continually chose not to believe me on this matter of fact issue and instead tried to bully me into paying for services they did not perform, but it was not appreciated. I then found the email that proves that I specifically asked Ron not to do the bedroom rad and sent it to her. I then heard back from her a week later with a revised amount that did not include the bedroom rad. No apology offered. Resolved to my satisfaction, yes, but what an ordeal.

If I could offer any advice, it would be for Laird and Son to work on their inter-departmental communication. No one knew what the other person had discussed with me. Artie didn't know what Ron and I had discussed and Kim didn't know what Ron and Artie and I had discussed. It caused no end to problems. Although they have excellent customer service when it comes to fixing these problems, a little more communication could have prevented them in the first place. Also, insinuating that the customer is being untruthful, is a big mistake.

Company Response

In response to Carly, We are pleased that Carly is appreciative and pleased with the completed work. There were difficulties in communication and the details of the job were changed several times (everyone knows how time consuming a renovation can be). We were working alongside other contractors whose work coincided with our installation and created difficulties in scheduling and getting our job done in the time we had allotted. We will continue to provide excellent regular maintenance and emergency service as per our contract agreement.

New Furnace, Air Conditioner and Water Heater

I hired after Laird after meeting with 3 potential contractors. Ron the salesperson seemed knowledgeable and did not try to oversell me or undersell me and recommended the right and excellent solution at a fair price. The 3 person crew that showed up were professional, knowledgeable and had excellent attention to detail. There were a couple of minor adjustments I requested and they came back promptly a couple of days later to get them resolved. We love our new heating system as it is much quieter than the former old furnace, as well, it keeps our house now evenly heated with the 2 stage furnance and the new humidifier makes the home feel warmer and more comfortable. Everyone I dealt with at Laird was professional, honest and easy to work with with excellent products. Would highly recommend.

New Furnace

I hired Laird after another company shut down my furnace doing a "tune-up" (as described in another review). The gentleman from Laird walked me through a number of options and I decided to buy a new Lennox from them. The sales process was easy with no pressure. They provided me with electric heaters and made a point to have his technicians tear apart my old furnace to see if the other company's claims were true. We tested my old heat exchanger together and their were no problems with it. They also pointed out an issue with my air conditioner installation and fixed it for free. The techicians were fast, clean, and courteous. My new furnace works great. I was happy to give them the business and would do so again.

Air conditioning in house with rads

Laird and Sons installed our air conditioning with the utmost attention to detail. Our home is from the 1930s, and very difficult to renovate. Laird did a great job working through the nooks and crannies. They were able to give us air in a radiator home. Wonderful workmanship. We could not live another summer without them. I highly recommend this company

Replacing my boiler

I had an emergency when my boiler burst in the middle of one of the coldest days in January. Laird & Son was recommended to me by a friend that works in the business. I called them in a panic and we arranged a meeting for later that day.
The salesman Ron showed up on time, and did a nice job of assessing the situation and outlining to me my options. He gave me a quote which I was able to compare to another quote that I received from another company that same day. The Laird and Son quote was competitive so I decided to use them.
I was very happy with the work the team did. They showed up as scheduled and did a great job. I am very particular about how things should get done, and left them a long list of things I wanted them to do, and they did everything that I asked for. The installers were professional and courteous and left my place clean.
Overall, I had a very positive experience with Laird and Son and I would highly recommend them for any work on your boiler or heating system.

Installling lennox new furnace, and rinnai tankless water heater

I was very satisfied with the workmanship, knowledge, help with making our decision, integrity, and professional conduct with all the employees at Laird and Son. We first got our energy audit, then three quotes from different companies, and we are extremely pleased with our Lennox 195E furnace and our Rinnai tankless water heater, we have peace of mind having Laird and Son do the work for us. s.binks scarborough

High water pressure in bolier

My son moved into his new house and found the boiler, that feeds the water rads, was reading a very high water pressure of 40 psi (suggested 10 to 12 psi).

We were recommended to Laird & Son by a friend and called emergency service. Noah came to the house, diagnosed the problem, and corrected the situation. We were very inpressed with him and his professional approach. Noah is a very pleasant person and he certainly is a huge credit to your organization. We would have no hesitation in recommending your company.

Thank you very much again for the great service.

Furnace maintenance and repair

The technicians are friendly, courteous, and very service-minded. However, I found their availability and the responsiveness of the office staff underwhelming.

My initial call was to ask for a tune-up and repair, and although I told the person scheduling the call that I wasn't getting heat, she made no effort to try and fit me in earlier. The tech who came a week later was courteous, got everything working again, and was very helpful in explaining what was wrong and giving me tips on maintenance I can perform.

A couple of weeks later, I came home from Christmas vacation to a very cold house. Laird's phone system was down - not their fault, I realize - so I couldn't even leave a message. I went to the website but there was no mention of phone issues or an alternate number to call. I left an email - no response. Finally, I remembered that I had the tech's number on my cell phone so called him directly to get my call logged.

Another tech did come by that night (after trying to convince me to wait till morning) and got the furnace working again, but it is now four days later and I have no heat again. Called to log a call and was greeted by voice mail with a deeply nested menu to get to emergency service. Left the message 2 hours ago, and sent an email - and have not heard from anyone.

Company Response

We first attended this home on December 8th and again on December 28th. The second call was not charged and the call from December 8th was refunded to compensate this customer for their inconvenience.
While attending to hundreds of calls it can happen periodically where for a variety of reasons or human error we do not meet a customer's expectations.
We do take it seriously and have apologized and tried to compensate this customer.
