New Roof

My husband and I contacted D’Angelo and Sons to replace our roof. The salesman came out to give us a quote, and asked if we would be replacing our three skylights. We said no as they were less than 10 years old, and were still under warranty. That was the last time replacing the skylights was mentioned by the salesman. About a month later, the crew arrived at our house. About half way through the demolition, the project manager arrived and said that he wanted us to know that if anything went wrong with the skylights, it was not the company’s responsibility. Considering half of the shingles were gone off of the roof at that point, there wasn’t much I could do.

The work seemed to go well. The crew was professional (although one neighbor did complain about the foul language). They did a good job of cleaning up, and we had no complaints.

Fast forward a month. We’d had a few days of rain, and the roof had held up well. But one morning, after a particularly hard rain, we woke up to water in the kitchen. The drywall on the ceiling was damaged, and the overhead lights were no longer working. It was apparent that the roof was leaking. We called D’Angelo and Sons to tell them about the problem, and here’s where things went downhill.

We didn’t know where the leak was but it appeared to be in the vicinity of the skylight. As soon as the office heard that, they said they’d have to call us back. Mr. D’Angelo called us (I’m not sure if it was the father or son). He was immediately on the defensive going on and on about how the skylights were not their responsibility. I could barely get a word in. When I said that I wasn’t 100% sure if it was the skylight, maybe it was somewhere else on the roof, he replied “Are you a roofing expert?” When I said that the skylights weren’t that old because we had replaced ones that had previously leaked, he said “So they DID leak at one time.” Well, the old skylights had leaked but not the new ones. I finally had to talk over him and say “Before your team came, the roof didn’t leak, and after they came, the roof leaked. Come out to our house and find the problem!” Mr. D’Angelo was so rude on the phone, I could hardly believe it. It’s hard to convey in words, just how rude he was. All we wanted was someone to come out and check the roof to see if they could find and fix the source of the leak. If the issue was a skylight, then we would’ve figured out where to go from there. What we got was someone who acted as though he didn’t even want to come out to check out the problem, never mind fix it.

Mr. D’Angelo arrived, and while he was more polite in person than on the phone, he was still defensive and acting as though he was doing us a big favour for coming out. He went on to say how windows shouldn’t even be on roofs. And that “some” customers didn’t want to spend the added expense of replacing the skylights when replacing their roof even though that was the smart thing to do. I had to remind him that no one had ever mentioned to us that it was in our best interest to replace the skylights. He proceeded to tell us that our roof wouldn’t last that long anyways due to the way the house was built. And continued with telling us that he tries to look after his customers but sometimes people have unrealistic expectations about the responsibilities of his company. None of these comments were particularly helpful…we just wanted a roof that didn’t leak, not a commentary of what we had done wrong. He even said that sometimes roofs only leaked once or twice in particularly hard rains, as though that was acceptable. He finally went on the roof and re-caulked around the skylights and vents, and said to wait and see if that worked.

Since he repaired the roof, we haven’t had another leak…for now. But we are left with drywall and electrical repairs below a roof that may or may not leak again depending on the severity of the rain. I would not recommend D’Angelo and Sons, especially if you have skylights. Not only did we end up with a leaky roof, but they were rude and very difficult to deal with once we had a problem.

Company Response

Alison we are sorry you are disappointed. Unfortunately skylights can be tricky. We always recommend doing them with a new shingle roof. We understand that they are expensive but they should be changed. As mentioned they can still be changed because the roof install was recent. Whether we do it or someone else this is our recommendation. We hope we would still be your contractor of choice but either way we hope the best. Thanks Alison.

Eavestrough, Soffit, Fascia, Downspouts, Flashing, Rain Barrels

We bought our century home a year ago and within 6 months our eaves-trough/roofing system was in dire need of replacing. Our galvanized steel system was failing miserably. Rain water was pouring next to our house resulting in extreme dampness and mould in our basement. Our woodwork siding was also rotten in many places and when the previous owners had redone the roof several years ago, not only had they just layered new shingles over 2 layers of old shingles, they had neglected to address the fact that our roof had zero ventilation resulting in cooking worthy temperatures in our finished attic and faster roof deterioration, among other worries. (All of which we learned through the expertise of D'Angelo & Sons)

After meeting with several companies who specialize in roofing systems, we felt the most comfortable and informed by our meeting with Jim from D'Angelo & Sons. His level of professionalism and transparency was incredible and although the project in question was much more substantial than we had first imagined (new downspouts, soffit, fascia, flashing, eaves-trough, rain barrels), we knew that approaching it with D'Angelo would mean that the job would be done extremely well and we would be worry-free. Better to have such a job done once, well, than to try and cut corners only to have to redo work later down the road. From our very first meeting with Jim right through to the follow-up meeting with our project supervisor after the job was done, everything was incredibly smooth, pleasant and impressive. We also learned an awful lot about our house.

We must also commend D'Angelo for their culture of going above and beyond in the customer service department because our sales associate Jim took very ill following our quote consultation. Note only did we get another fine sales associate in Matt, we were visited in-person by John, the owner, to finalize colours and sign our contract plus we were telephoned by Jim's daughter who offered his apologies for not being able to continue with our account. Furthermore, we couldn't have asked for a more personable, courteous, efficient or perfectionist crew. Not to mention the lovely gift basket we received at the end of it all. We will continue to recommend D'Angelo & Sons to anyone who needs roof work done and will certainly be using them again to replace our roof when the time comes. This company is phenomenal.

New Roof

Shaman and the team just finished the new roof this morning. They where very courteous, took care not too damage the garden or surroundings. Awesome clean-up in fact the deck was cleaner when they finished than when they started.

Any concerns we had were addressed immediately. They worked really, really hard and I would highly recommend them if you are considering a new roof.

I chose D"Angelos because I wanted to deal with one company for the roof and eavestroughs and downpipes. The rest of the work is being done next week and that team have a hard act to follow!!

Roofing Job

This company had a lot of positive reviews, so we gave them a call. The sales guy was very nice, the quote looked OK, and we signed up and put $500 down on June 13, with the understanding that they were about a month away. The second week of July, I began a series of phone calls to D'Angelo roofing, to get an
idea of when they would be ready to go; I wanted to give a head's up to the neighbours. It was hard to get an answer, the person who answered the phone didn't seem to be passing on my messages. Finally I do speak to Richard, the scheduler, who says Wed July 23. No one shows by 9 a.m. that day, so I call, and he tells me he gave me a 2 day window...they will be there Thurs. July 24 at 8 a.m. Guaranteed. Thurs. at 9 I'm calling again, but cannot get a call back. Just after Noon, the three new skylights show up, so I'm thinking something's happening. Nothing else shows up Thurs. though, and no word from D'Angelo's at all. Friday morning comes along, and by 9, I'm calling their office again. Richard tells me that Shayne, the salesman, needs to visit again and re-price the job!! He tells me that they are also looking into other jobs that have been quoted by Shayne. I'm a bit shocked...I really don't know what to say...we put money down on a signed contract 5 weeks ago, and now we have to start from scratch again?? Richard was not very forthcoming or apologetic...it was apparent that they just wanted out of the job. So, I said I really wasn't pleased with their way of doing business. Send the $500 back, and please come and pick up the skylights (which they did pick up right away). I got the cheque from D'Angelo today, so the deal has been concluded.
I have to say that I'm really confused about what happened here. This was a $12000 job, and why they suddenly didn't want the business is beyond me.
Beware if you choose these guys!! They are unreliable and untrustworthy.
