The written contract will specific the scope of work and material to be used. I.E provide 2" of compacted asphalt, 2" new gravel; removed 2" of spoiled surface soil and 2-3 " of old asphalt. Original agreed price $6300.
Unfortunately, I had additional layers of asphalt and concrete needed to be removed. I also needed extra gravels. This added another $2700 to the final bill.
As a first timer, I neglected to ask the "what if" question regarding the extra labour and cost needed to remove the additional layers of old asphalt before commencing the work. Paving contractors should have no problem providing an estimated cost for removal and cost for additional materials. It is prudent to know your cost so you can control your budget. There is no way to know if you actually receiving the quoted 2" compacted asphalt unless you use a device to measure the thickness. I guess you can ask to see the waybill and ask that all the delivered asphalt to be used on the project (driveway) as part of the contract.
