10/10

When we moved into our house almost 20 years ago we were delighted with how the previous occupant had renovated so much of the house to a clean and modern look. The jarring omission to this was the master bathroom. Straight out of the 50's it had the half wall of salmon/pink tiles with a black tile border. A matching pink tub finished off the look. We couldn't afford to change it right away so we lived with it... for too long. Finally we checked on Homestars for contractors and contacted a few. Even with Homestars it was the old story of too busy to call back. We got estimates but only Piero from Valentini Kitchens made time to come out to see us and give us an estimate actually based on measuring the room and listening to what we wanted the room to be. We went to his showroom which was under renovations itself (busy people) and we made our selections of materials and finalized the plan and when it would all begin. As this was our only bathroom with a shower we had to make alternate arrangements so Piero scheduled his people to arrive in a tight sequence to move through the process quickly. To make this possible we gave him a couple of months lead time to fit this into his busy schedule. Do you know what you get when you gut a bathroom with those tough as armor 50's tiles. Dust! While they did their best to tent the hallway to reduce the flow of dust, you just can't avoid the fine powdered ceramic bits from floating everywhere. It certainly could have been worse had they not made those efforts but ugh! Those tiles are horrible to remove. Jackhammers, crow bars, and sledgehammers are required to break the tiles and the thick cement holding them to the nailed on wire mesh. Had the tiles gone to the ceiling we could have used the room as a bomb shelter. The gutted room looked amazing and it only took them a day. Granted it was a long and full day with quite a few workers moving back and forth in that little room but they got it all out. Next came the new subfloor, new drywall (mold resistant), new ceramic floor tiles, new tub with ceramic tile surround (even the ceiling!!!), new granite vanity top and sink (kept the old cabinet), new tub and sink fixtures, new ceiling lighting and exhaust fan (existing exhaust piping), existing toilet, new medicine cabinet (reframing was done to accommodate the larger size), new bathroom and linen closet doors, and new custom doors for a storage cubby in the room as well. Once all that was installed they painted the room and painted the hallway too. The change was amazing! Such a difference! We LOVE our new bathroom! I never want to see salmon/pink black trimmed tiles again! The workers arrived on time every day and worked long hours to get the job done quickly. They were always friendly and courteous. Piero kept an eye on the progress and was there when we had questions. Very helpful and I can't recommend them enough.
