DOME PROJECT MANAGMENT / MODUS ENTERPRISES of Vancouver installed a pantry cabinet adjacent to a wall without a filler or spacer. The door to the pantry cabinet opens up into the wall. It has been three weeks and I have had only one phone call and Dome Project Managment / Modus Enterprises has not committed to a time to repair their installation. I requested in email and verbally that they install a plywood subfloor under the counters to match the height of the floors and so that the appliances would fit. Modus' idea of a subfloor is small pieces of particle board place precariously under the cabinet legs. As we all know, particle board meets no building code standard and literally disintegrate if water ever hit them. Ikea makes wonderful cabinets, just DO NOT ask DOME PROJECT MANAGMENT MODUS ENTERPRISES to install them.

Company Response

Modus Enterprises became the Lower Mainland's Certified Installer of IKEA Kitchen Cabinets in 1998. Since then we have installed 7000+ kitchens all according to IKEA's installation practices as well as BCBC and COV codes. Although IKEA is designed to work on a self-planning basis, we always offer solutions for clients with issues in their designs. In the case of this customer the cabinets were planned without enough space for filler next to the pantry: On the morning of the installation we offered a solution that involved modifying the adjacent cabinet to provide the filler space for a small customization charge, and the client declined so we installed according to her plan as it was originally designed. Regarding the request to install a subfloor, this is not a service we normally provide and we used blocks under the cabinet legs to raise the cabinets (necessary for installing a new floor after the cabinet install) - per IKEA's installation practices - at no additional charge.

Update on this situation since Jill's feedback: We have exchanged emails and phone calls regarding this situation, and returned to the site for an inspection of our installation and of the alterations made to it by the local handyman Jill had hired before informing or consulting with us on these issues. In good faith and with high priority placed on maintaining our good relationship with IKEA, we have accommodated Jill with both material for the pantry filler, as well as the labour required to re-level the cabinets her handyman had un- and re-installed, thereby completing the job to Jill's requirements. Following these resolutions and given that we have not heard back from messages left for her, we can only hope that any further comments from Jill would reflect this more positive outcome.

Of course we understand and regret that not every customer can be kept happy through each step in the renovation process. Our goal is always to satisfy our customers and provide quality work within the scope of the services we offer, and we stand behind that with all of our company policies and warranties. We are continually working to reinforce our great working relationship with IKEA as one of their longest-standing independent service providers and value each customer who chooses to have their IKEA kitchen installed by certified professionals.
