We called Broom's for cleaning and service of our gas fireplace. We were quoted $150, plus any cost for parts, if necessary. When the serviceman came he did the cleaning and sold us a new remote control for $100. We thought the price was reasonable. However, when the serviceman turned the fireplace he said that it was leaking carbon monoxide, and we could not use it until he installed a new gasket, which he would have to specially order for us. He advised the price for this new gasket and installation would be $175, which seemed excessive, but if we needed it to use the fireplace, we had no choice. Broom's called the next day to advise that the gasket had been ordered and arranged for installation the next week. When the serviceman returned, he took out a roll of what appeared to be weatherproofing tape from his tool bag. The tape was not in a sealed bag or box, as one would expect if it had been specially ordered for us. Rather, it was regular weatherproofing tape that a serviceman would normally carry with him on a typical service call. Tape that can be bought at any Home Depot. The serviceman applied the tape on 3 edges of the glass front. It took him less than 15 minutes, and he charged us $175. If all that was needed was this tape, and not a specially ordered gasket, it should have been done at the original service call, with a small charge for the 4 foot length of tape. We should not have been charged for a second service call simply because he didn't carry common tape with him, and we should not have been told that a special gasket was being ordered for us, when the tape he applied was not a brand new unopened package. I will never call Broom's again, and would highly recommend that others seek out a different company for service or sales. They are completely untrustworthy.
