Dear Sharp Exteriors I was told by your estimator to address this issue to the Sales Manager for Sharp Exterior's Roofing Company, which I did in writing, but never got a reply. In that e-letter I mentioned my concern for previous work done by Sharp Exterior's on our property which included removal of existing Roof and replacing boards as per your Company Standards , work that was done in 1998 for which we paid close to $3000 which included a 25 year warranty. I called back Sharp Exteriors for a quote when I noticed some defective parts on the roof .This new quote included per your appraiser : full replacement of the existing Roof plus parts ,all work previously done by Sharp Exterior's Roofing in the past ,documented in the sales bill I still have. Over a phone conversation about your products used on our roof you mentioned that Sharp Exterior's had stopped using that defective material due to the number of complains received then .You told me to contact the manufacturer directly instead, I also mentioned if you were in no position to make a decision, to escalate this concern to higher levels and offer us a more satisfactory alternative so we emailed you ,but never got a reply. In re-considering Sharp Exterior's was aware of the defectiveness in the Materials & Product used and Sold to the Public then, Sharp Exterior's should had offer full replacement of Materials and Labor, rather than keeping silence to the public and wait for customers to claim their Warranty when the problem would arise. We don't consider fair having paid $3000 for a new Roof ,replacing Boards, Vents, Chimneys and what else was suggested in 1998 and be forced to do the same work again paying another $3000 as your new quote indicates ,instead, you only suggested help in procuring a claim through the warranty purchased which would only gives us a couple hundred bucks ,as you said. It is with this in mind ,that I have asked for your Co-operation in not writing the Manufacturer of the material used in getting a couple hundreds in reimbursement as we been told by you and your estimator , but to assume responsibilities and replace defective material used 8 or 10 year ago when Sharp Exterior's became aware with complains for the product used then. Hope someone else gets help.

Company Response

Yes, the Customer should definitely be aware!

This is in response to Mr. J.B. in Erin Mills:

Sharp Exteriors is an installer and a facilitator; we are not the shingle manufacturer, therefore, cannot be held responsible for manufacturer defects in the shingles previously installed on your roof. This is why, after a meeting with our estimator and then with the production and operations manager, you were advised to contact the manufacturer in order to start a claim. Our representative also offered you assistance with facilitating the claim process, which you refused.

At the time of installation, there were only two shingle manufacturers available to us, and one of those companies was up for sale. Therefore, we chose the more reputable one that was available. You are right in stating that we have been aware of the product’s defects, and that is why we have stopped using this product over 6 years ago; however, since we’re not the manufacturer or supplier/retailer, we cannot initiate a manufacturer product recall.

Please note that the manufacturers we currently use are two of the best shingle producers on the market. Also the modern fibreglass shingle technology is much better than it was ten years ago, so now the shingles can be expected to last beyond their specified time period. In fact, the two manufacturers we currently use both warrantee all their architectural laminate shingles for a lifetime period. However, the shingle warranty is still a manufacturer ruling and we, as an installer, cannot influence or change the way the manufacturer chooses to pro-rate their product. Since all manufacturers pro-rate their products, we strongly urge all clients to inquire into purchasing an extended warranty; in any roofing installation, with any manufacturer, or any contractor authorized to offer such an upgrade on behalf of the manufacturer. The extended warranty extends the non-pro-rated period, thus offering more complete coverage for three to four times the length of time than what the regular warranty offers. Yes, it does mean a higher initial cost, but it ensures overall peace of mind in the long run.

The shingle warranty offered to Mr. J. B. by that manufacturer is pro-rated; as a result, it loses its original value as time passes. We understand that you were not satisfied with the manufacturer’s pro-rated offer, but that is the only option you have to receive any monetary reimbursement. As there are no workmanship issues, and all materials other than the shingles have fulfilled performance and contractual obligations, we cannot offer you an entirely new roof.

Sharp Exteriors thanks you for your comments.
