I purchased a Mattamy townhouse in Stittsville as a rental property in Dec 2014. When I started the process to claim the HST rebate I called the customer care coordinator's office in the Ottawa area to enquire about the process and the required paperwork. I was told very flippantly that Mattamy had already claimed the rebate since they were unaware that the purchase was for rental, stating that my lawyer was remiss for not advising the Mattamy lawyer of the purpose for the purchase. I was advised that it was up to me to follow up with my lawyer. At my expense, after several phone calls to my lawyer (who had to go through the same customer care office to get info from the Mattamy lawyer ), my lawyer eventually advised me that, in fact, the Mattamy lawyer was well aware that my property was purchased as a rental and that I could indeed go ahead and proceed with claiming the HST which I had paid, and have since successfully claimed. I did not hear anything about the issue from Mattamy until I sent an email to them on Dec 10, 2015 stating that I wished to follow up about the process. My issue: the customer care coordinator with whom I initially dealings was unprofessional and in my opinion disinterested and downright rude to me. At no time when I called for assistance and advice, did she apologize that, in fact, there may have been an error on Mattamy's part and she would look into it until we reached a satisfactory resolution. The bottom line, the customer care woman in the Ottawa office needs a lesson in being respectful and investigative, not dismissive and curt.
